6.4 Hemi or 6.7 Cummins? We have been towing our Grand Design Reflection with our gas HD truck for over a year. With what we know now, would we buy gas again??

If it costs $10 grand extra to get a diesel over your current truck, you can buy lots of gas for $10 grand. Diesel trucks cost more to maintain too

Agreed. That went into my decision when I purchased my truck. Thanks for commenting

I’ve got the same truck- went back and forth for months over a diesel versus gas. It was my dealer (family friend owns the local Ram dealer) who convinced not to buy the diesel due to all the problems they see at the dealership with diesels. So far fairly happy with the Hemi. What size/brand tires?

Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting. The tires are 285/60/20 Cooper Discoverer AT3. They are quiet for AT tires but stiffer than the Firestones that can on the truck. I can feel potholes a little more than before.

I own a 22 3500 with the Cummins. I think your hauling experience would definitely be better, but the nuances of dealing with the DPF, DEF fluid and random Automatic Diesel Particulate Filter Regens can drive you nuts. I pull a boat a lot, but it’s also my daily driver, so I’ve learned that driving short distances in town on a regular basis clogs up the DPF filter. I basically plan at least an hour long drive on the interstate every week just to clear out the exhaust system. Also, the Auto Regens will start at the worst possible times and they last about 20 minutes or so. If I was pulling a trailer in the mountains a lot, I definitely go with the Cummins, but for my particular situation, I probably would have bought the 6.4 Hemi in retrospect.
@LivingOutLoud12106 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. For the short time that I had the loaner that was a Cummins I definitely enjoyed the towing experience. But my commute to work is only 7 miles and the DPF was one of my biggest concerns because of the short drives. I’m curious about how those emission systems are affected if you don’t drive on a regular basis and only use the truck for occasional towing.

Nice video... I have a Ram 2500 and pull a Grand Design 28BH. We have visited over 25 states with zero issues. I get about the same MPG with the 6.4 3.73 rear end. I did opt for the long bed with the factory 50 gallon tank which is amazing when towing a large trailer. Don't have to worry about getting into the tight gas pumps most of the time. My only regret is just not getting the 3500 with the 4.10 rear end. Safe travels.

Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment. That 50 gallon tank is nice! I would have definitely went that route if one was available when I was in the market. Continue enjoying your truck and travels!

Nice truck! If it works, then you should keep it. Diesel has its own set of problems and costs.
@LivingOutLoud12107 ай бұрын
Hey guys. Thanks for watching and commenting. I agree about the costs related to upkeep of a diesel. Also my commute to work is only 7 miles. I have learned that short trips are not ideal for the DPF.

Beautiful truck. I own both and prefer the hemi. If you like turning off your truck in the drive through. Paying 400 plus each oil change because fuel filters need done too, Def, and a heavier slower truck trade for the cummins. Only makes sense if you are towing 10k every day and never use it for driving without the trailer.
@LivingOutLoud12105 ай бұрын
Thanks so watching and commenting. Great to hear the viewpoint from someone with experience owning both.

I just went from a Ram 2500 cummins to a Ram 2500 with the 6.4 liter. The cummins towed my 6k Airstream like nothing which is one of the reasons I went with the Hemi. I haven't towed with it yet but plan to this weekend and very curious to see how it will go plus my mpg compared to the diesel although I'm sure it will be just fine. For me a big deciding factor to give up the diesel was the extra maintenance costs plus the possibility of a costly repair due to all the emissions crap placed on modern diesels. Don't get me wrong diesels definitely have their place just not for a light bumper pull 😊

So after towing over 600 miles with the Hemi 6.4 I can report that it did as well as I expected it to. I was averaging 10.5-11mpg through our southern and central california hills and mountains. Never felt that it was underpowered and had room to go faster. No pedal to the metal. Also performed better than expected going down some 6 and 7% grades with the engine braking and was pleasantly surprised. Having said all that, a diesel definitely tows better than any gasser but for my set up I am more than pleased.
@LivingOutLoud12106 ай бұрын
Great info. I agree, the diesel is a going to tow like nothing is behind it but most people don’t need that on a daily basis. I’m glad your truck perform to your liking. Safe travels.

I traded in my 2022 RAM 1500 Hemi 5.7 gasser for the 2024 2500 Rebel 6.7 Cummins Diesel because when towing my boat the gas engine barely could get over 70 on the freeway, and screamed up to 5000 RPM going up a hill. I was worried about all the extra stress on the engine and didn't want to blow it up. My new Diesel pulls my boat at 80 at 1800 RPM and goes up those same hills at 2300 RPM. I also get way better gas mileage with Diesel than Gas. My hemi would average 14-15 MPG without towing. My new Diesel gets 17-19 MPG w/o towing. When I tow my boat with the gasser I would get 7-10 MPG, with my Diesel 10-13 MPG. Best decision in my life.
@LivingOutLoud12104 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting. I definitely understand the decision and the benefits. We are starting to travel more and more pulling our 5th wheel and with the price of diesel back down to pre pandemic level, a good deal could make me pull the trigger on a diesel too.

Debating on buying a 6.4 2500 to replace a truck that was wrecked. We already have a 4500 diesel so don't really need another diesel. We will probably tow the boat and a few other things occasionally with this new truck but will still pull the travel trailer, tractor and stuff like that with our 4500. This and a few other videos are making me feel good about buying the gasser, it's still plenty capable of we need to pull with it judging from what I see you're pulling. Thank you.

Have had my 6.4 since August of 2021, bought it with 3 miles on it. I was the same as you, wore my wife out with “I should get a diesel” but it pulls our 32ft bumper pull just fine and does everything that I need it to do. I’ve noticed more and more gas 3/4 ton trucks at the campgrounds nowadays too. If it works for you that’s all that matters, Sharp ride by the way!

Great topic! I currently pull with a gas truck, 2019 F250 6.2L, our RV is only 12,200 gwvr. I think your points are dead on about the decision on whether to go diesel. We only tow maybe once or twice a month and not everyday, so the need for a diesel is not there for us. We recently ordered a 2024 F350 with the 7.3L godzilla gas engine for future RV upgrade.

Great looking truck! I picked up a 22' used, new to me 2500 Big Horn with the 6.4 Hemi. I've had numerous diesels and love them, but I don't tow often, and felt the gas would work for what I use the truck for currently. I live in Colorado.

I had a '22 6.7 cummins and it was the worst truck i've ever had - emissions issues since day 1 i bought it home ( i bought it new) - problem after problem and the engine lifters failed after 16k miles. I had plenty of trucks inbetween since then and now have a '24 Power Wagon - stick with the Hemi/Gas truck.

We’ve done it all - When we started towing, we were pulling a 26’ travel trailer with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We later got an F-150 (gas), which did better. We’ve also had a 3/4 ton diesel (GMC) and now have an F-350 dually. I’ll say this - pulling thru the mountains, the diesel made a major difference for peace of mind. I still remember the drive from STL to Carolina Pines with the Jeep… rough! lol Now this dually barely feels our 16K GVWR 5er. It’s the BEST towing experience… ever. Oh - and bonus: using the tractor trailer lanes to refuel. We hated dealing with the main fuel pumps while towing. 😅

I sorry but I think you bumped your head lol! I've had bows and go in diesel 25 Ram Cummins turbo diesel heavy duty is amazing we have a pretty heavy trailer and this truck does not have a problem at all way better fuel mileage a little more maintenance but not bad at all totally worth it. If you don't pull a whole lot and you like driving around with groceries in the back of your truck then I guess you could get a gas rig if you want to pull long distance up and down Hills you don't see any big rigs with gas engines they're all straight 6 inline beautiful engines LOL! Exhaust brake is a must-have must have Ben from Oregon all the way to New York you're talking crazy Hills up and down and flat exhaust brake is amazing my brakes were Harley ever touched ain't going downhill as long as some bonehead didn't pull in front of me I never had to use my brakes exhaust brakes are amazing just saying:-)

Thanks for commenting. I agree that the power and exhaust brake are nice advantages to have especially if you have a heavy trailer. In my case and many others, my camper is 11K lbs and my utility trailer is probably 2k, so it becomes a mater of “nice to have” or “need to have”
