Thanks for the great video. A couple of things to note: I have a 2014 and the owners manual says it takes 10.5 quarts. When I changed the oil, that's exactly how much it took. So I'd say to check your manual since not all 2014s take 8 quarts and it would suck to underfill and/or not have enough oil on hand thinking you only need 8 quarts. Secondly, definitely get the big drain pan and make sure it has a large center hole! That oil drains faster than my pan could take it all in. Even though my pan has a 15 quart capacity, the center hole was too small, so the oil overflowed and I ended up with a huge spill in my driveway.

Thanks for the great video! I just did an oil change on my Ecodiesel this afternoon. Used Rosella T6 5w40. Got a really good deal on 5 gallon bucket so I bought 2. I have enough for 3 oil changes for $150 Cdn. Bought Fram filter for $30. Works out to $80 Cdn. That’s about $55usd. Very inexpensive. I go the full 10,000 miles but maybe I should rethink that. I sure like my Ecodiesel. This is my third one and have no issues at all. Drives good pulls good and I regularly get 30mpg. Hope to get a 2020 with Ecodiesel.

Great video. Excellent camera work and informative. Just FYI, the Remote Start function is automatically deactivated when the hood is open so its not necessary to keep the remote 6 feet away. This is assuming you have the hood open while doing an oil change or other engine maintenance
@RamEcoDieselSource
@RamEcoDieselSource 8 жыл бұрын
Yes I am aware I installed the factory remote starts for 10 years at the dealer but like I said you can easily set that case of oil on top of it accidentally when you are prepping the truck for the truck for the oil change. Not to mention all the return wire of that switch needs is a ground from a short or mice damage to defeat the switch. My motto is to never assume especially during an oil change that would be a costly assumption.

I always pour a little into the new filter at least enough to soak the paper element. Not enough to leak in this case. In other types, a couple ounces in the bottom. Oil flows slightly quicker then as it isn't pulled into the paper at first. Minor maybe but easy to do.

Whew. Just got done changing my oil, per your video and I have to tell you, the reset method to zero the Oil Change indicator did not work the way you described, even tho my computer showed me the same dialogs yours did (reset with the arrow keys). I tried it about 5 different times, no luck. Finally, I read the owners manual and it said to turn the key to run (without the engine on) and depress the gas pedal three times within 10 seconds, then shut ignition off. Voila! Zeroed now....

The TSB I have read in multiple places lets you use ACEA A3/B4 spec oil. You can get a Mobil 1 'European Car Formula' 0-40W full synthetic at Autozone. I got a total of 15 quarts and three filters (have a Corvette to do with another oil) for about $120 after tax. 0-40W will of course flow better during startup but it might burn a little due to the 0W in hotter climates. But good for winter.

Hey their, nice video. I have been looking at some used eco diesel trucks & one thing I have noticed on all of them is that when I have been checking the oil on them they all appear low. Is this possibly have something to do because of the intricate head design not allowing all the oil to flow down to the pan very quickly??? I have found it odd that is has been consistent on the eco diesel motors. Your thoughts???

Here it is almost two years later (Aug 2017) and now we are told to use the 5W-40W Rotella. Also, Brian, my Eco Diesel tells me to do my oil changes every 10K, and the on-board computer is set to do that, showing 50% oil life after 5K remaining. So, I do my tire rotate every 5K, my Oil & filter every 10K (or every other tire rotate) and my Fuel Filter change and rotate at 15K or 5k after the oil is changed. I hope I am doing this correctly? Am not at 56K on this engine and so far, no issues whatsoever.

@@josedelgado6138 Well - interesting you've asked. Our truck was doing great all these years (and we really like it) UNTIL mid April when it threw a code: " Service Electronic Throttle" and put the truck in a semi-limp mode (would only go about 45 mph up steep hills). I drove it to the shop and found out it need a new "toning wheel" which is mounted inside the transmission to tell the engine when to send fuel to the rail to the cylinders. That part is on National recall and was utterly unavailable until just recently. Basically, our truck (which still ran) has been in the shop awaiting that part since April 20. The shop informed us last week that they FINALLY got the part to fix it and will be installing it at the end of this week. Ram trucks around the country are awaiting this recall part. Our truck's part just happened to break before the part was available so we've been without it. Fortunately, we had another vehicle. If you own a Ram Eco diesel, get it to the dealership and get your part replacement scheduled asap, before it breaks. We really miss our Ram and its 28-30 mpg as our other truck gets 14-15.

I bought my Wix WL10060 at O'Reilly for the big value of $13.00. The local Ram Dealer said that is what they use and the oil is nothing real special they used Shell Rotella T6 which is what I run in my John Deere tractors too. Tractor Supply had by far the best price on the 2.5 Gallon jugs at $43.99 each. Compared to O'Reillys at $69.98 per 2.5 Gallon jug. The Mopar branded Oil is apparently nothing more than the Shell Rotella T6 rebranded. Meant to add that Ram charges $177 for just the oil change DFW area and local Firestone charges $225. That is strictly an oil and filter change nothing else.

Hummm, my Brother is a master mechanic - ever single state of Michigan license. Been so since he left the USN in the early 1980's... OK, in that time, he gave me much grief as did every one else for using Mobil 1 full synthetic since high school. When I ordered my first 7.3L Ford PowerStroke in 1999 I switched to Mobile DelVac 1 - full synthetic industrial diesel oil. Indefinite life, with normal filter changes and 15k oil analysis. Now comes my first two new EcoDiesel 3.0L - RAM 2017 and Gand Cherokee 2018. Bro (in product development at FCA) says I need higher Sulfur content full synthetic - Rotella T-6. Guess what I use now?

Great video, very clear & to the point. Quick question though, I have read through the comments to make sure that it hasn't been asked/answered before. I have been scared into believing that doing my own oil changes would void my extended warranty. I have a 2014 GC Ecodiesel which I care for alot, probably more than the kid at the local dealership who would be doing my oil change there. It's not even to save money but more so because I am very picky and meticulous when it comes to maintenance on it. If I keep receipts/detailed records of my oil changes, will this void my warranty? I have heard a dealer say it will and another say it won't.. I value your expertise on any maintenance related subject more than both of them combined! Thanks in advance and keep the videos coming! Thanks for the vid's .. very helpful.. just a quick question .. whats your thoughs on adding an oil separator to these engines seem to be alot of people concered about coking..

An oil separator is alway a good idea to prevent as much carryover as possible. I am not worried about the oil carryover causing coking though Diesels have run dirty and had large amounts of oil carryover for as long as I can remember never an issue until EGR systems came into use.

Great video. I'll be doing my first oil change at 2500 miles. It seems RAM recommends Shell Rotella T6 5W-40, and I noticed you used 5W-30 Pennzoil Euro... why not use the Rotella, as recommended?

First off...I really like how you explain your ideas, opinions and knowledge. I own lawn maintenance company and tow 4,000lbs of equipment daily. I have a long bed single cab eco diesel. I took off the bed and replaced with a custom flatbed to make work easier and to load up snowmobiles for winter. The flatbed is a little heavier so I put the airbags in the coils to level out. I don't want to ruin my warranty so I would like to get your feedback on which direction I should go. I've seen people talking about GDE tunes and PPEI tunes. Deletes too. I looked into and leaning towards the Banks Stinger system. I want more power and better fuel economy with the flatbed weighing me down and towing daily. If it was you would you leave it stock or do mods?

I have a 2015 Ram Ecodiesel, recently brought it in for warranty work. The headlights flickered and the Radio Navigation was extremely slow. I did mention the rattle in the engine and transmission. The service advisor never documented that complaint. A call to FCA to speak to a rep about warranty claims and issues with service was extremely difficult to get answers. I believe the current problems with the EPA is giving a major problem for FCA. I mentioned to the rep that the Ecodiesel is no longer available at dealers and was curious about the reason for the Ecodiesel being discontinued. I said is it because of the motor and the rep said that he had no information about why it was stopped being sold. I guess the rep was playing dumb and I finally let him know that Fiat is in a jam like Volkswagen. We will be getting a buyback.

Don Olypopper The 2014-2016 Ecodiesel owners who had that software update to comply with the EPA Class Action Lawsuit have reported poor performance now. Many Ecodiesel owners are complaining about an Anti Freeze Coolant smell. A few fires caused another current recall on the Ecodiesel. The dealers are unable to make the repair to the EGR and will cause another major issue for owners. The class action lawsuit also has an FCA buyback for people that didn’t take the $3,075 USD cash back and limited warranty.

Thanks for posting the video. Wondering about a couple of things: 1. Why did you change filter before draining the oil? Why not take it out and have another vent location? Or leave the old filter in? 2. As far as I know, the oil change interval is 10,000 miles. Why change it every 5,000 miles?
@RamEcoDieselSource

+Alex T On any cartridge based system you want to remove the cartridge filter to release the anti drain back valve this allows the oil filter housing to also drain back to the pan first thing. Once the housing is drained then it cant drain no more so you are ok to put the new filter in at that point and finish up on the top end. By that time the pan is read to drain. Oil change intervals for diesels are still recommended every 5k for dino oil you could likely get 7500 miles no sweat with synthetic but there is a lot of soot and blow by with diesels and its best to not wait. The oil lubricated much more sensitive components than just main bearing thing turbo bearings that spin at a very high rpm.

Hello, I am looking at buying 2015 EcoDiesel Ram and wondered if you had any feedback on things to look for or check for before buying? Vehicle has the Laramie package with roughly 40k miles on it. Am in a Ford F150 now, and have had a great experience there, but the Ram has really caught my eye and I am very intrigued by the mileage performance of the EcoDiesel. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Be aware that the intake manifold wiil need to replaced at some point because of the valve body inside and the sensor on the bottom. What happens vis these get fill with soot. Replaced mine at 100k for around $2k. I'm not the original owner I bought it at 100k so I don't know if any additives were being added to the fuel or not. Thankfully I bought the extended warranty which covered all but $100 deductable.

Thinking about installing a amsoil bypass system on my ecodiesel, what are your thoughts on these systems? 10.5 quarts plus filter every 5k will get expensive

I ran an Amsoil bypass system on my 5.9 diesel, and it kept the oil very clean compared to no bypass filtration. I have since removed that filter system and it's going to go on my ecodiesel. In my opinion every diesel should have bypass filtration to remove harmful soot from the oil. Change the oil at normal intervals and then change the bypass filter every other oil change.
