My 2020 3rd gen Ecodiesel has been great. It tows my 6800lb Travel Trailer with ease and averages around 14 mpg doing it. Love that it has 1730lbs of payload capacity, and that it gets around 30mpg on the highway when not towing.

Gotta disagree with the statement that the EcoDiesel is not a good towing engine. I’ve had two and they are excellent trucks. Great mileage when towing (13 to 14 mpgs with ease) and the engine isn’t screaming when doing it. The listed towing capacity of the Hemi is unrealistic since the payload limits will be hit before you ever get to the listed towing capacity. We tow our 7000 lb travel trailer all over the country and love the diesel’s efficiency and lack of drama. Can’t say the same about past trucks with the Hemi.

What does payload have to do with towing? A (2022) 5.7L w/3.92 can tow just over 11k lbs. As long as the tongue limit can handle 10% of that (for conventional towing as an example) there's no issue. And the tongue limit is 1.1k lbs so that's fine. Maybe you can explain/educate us as to what is unrealistic about the stated figures? A big limitation of the ecodiesel is that even with a 3.92 it can't handle 10k lbs. 10k (or 9900 GVWR) trailers are common, so that likely limits sales. For example: I just have a compact tractor. With loaded tires and cab it weighs over 7k lbs. So I need a 10k trailer to take it anywhere. 7.5k tractor weight+2.5k trailer weight=10k. I'm right at trailer limit, but a hemi can tow it (whereas an ecodiesel can't). And that's just a tractor with no backhoe or other attachments. Of course if you only need 7k lbs (all-in trailer weight) then the ecodiesel seems like a good fit. No reason to get the hemi. This craziness with people over-buying truck capability is beyond me. Or even people buying trucks that just use them as commuting vehicles. I scratch my head.

@@cobra-he9xj Payload has *everything* to do with towing, and you hit on the reason why. The Max Tow Hemi has a tow rating of around 12K pounds. Payload is around 1550. Optimal tongue weight is 12% which puts the tongue weight of that 12K tow total at 1440. Add a 200 pound passenger or some tools, a heavy hitch etc and you’re over payload. The EcoDiesel with 3.92’s has a 9900 pound tow rating and the only reason it isn’t rated higher by the NHTSA is the ability to maintain a particular speed on their uphill grade test. But the diesel only missed that figure by a mile-an-hour or two. The Hemi is bumping the rev limiter to maintain that speed while the diesel sits at 3000 RPM and passes semis on the way up. I know because I’ve done it. And like I said in my first post above, the diesel is getting 50% better fuel economy vs the Hemi while doing it. My EcoDiesel fits my needs and keeps me happy while your Hemi fits the bill for you. It’s all good brother 👍😎
@cobra-he9xj
@cobra-he9xj 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobr7867 Yes. Absolutely good points! The newer hemi's are not so shabby though. Payload on the 12.75k version is actually 1840. And the Ram towing spec sheet recommends 10% tongue weight (I always trust the OEM when it comes to suspension geometry). Of course in my many decades of towing I've never measured anyway 😳. Probably should have. 🤔 Run the daylights outta that diesel before they make us all tow with EVs! ✌️😁

My business partner and I have two 4th GEN EDs used commercially towing Airstream TTs from plant to dealerships. 371k miles the first motor pushed a head gasket. The 2nd motor cracked a head at 423k miles. The 3rd & last motor is still in it. His had 452k when it puked the hi pressure fuel pump. His 2nd motor is still in it. My son also has an OTR business. He has 23k on his 5th gen truck a 22 ED. It’s a hands-down a better truck then the fourth GEN truck and motor. He just placed an order for another. I also recently bought a 22 2500 Cummins which I don’t regret for my needs but I wouldn’t hesitate to order one of the new fifth GEN EDs. Some of the 2020’s already over 100k miles very few issues.

Why is that hilarious? Most people aren't rich layabouts who have an unlimited amount of time to spend on vacation, so the less time that you spend on the road, the more time you spend on vacation. You can't use the savings that you might get by driving a diesel to buy the hours of your life back.

I own a 2016 Ram 1500 with the EcoDiesel, which I purchased immediately after having a 2018 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. I also tow a 12x6 trailer DAILY, as a replacement door and window contractor. I absolutely LOVE my diesel OVER the Hemi, in pretty much every category. Mileage, both highway, and city, and while towing or not towing, the 3.0 gets about 85% better gas mileage in all situations. Also, it does not feel “sluggish” in the least. Yes, the 5.7 can rip from a dead start, and will accelerate faster, but not THAT much more so. Besides, I have no reason/need/desire to drive it that way. Even at its peak price of $6.00/gal for fuel, (Pittsburgh, PA), I saved a lot of money at the pump. I drive quite a bit, 16,500 miles from July 2022-January 2023, and the savings has been incredible. This is my personal experience, and opinion on this engine, and it’s a shame that it’s no longer being offered.

I absolutely LOVE my EcoDiesel; Daily driver around town, tow when I need to and still get 22 city, 25 or so highway. Bought new in 2016 and other than the emissions 'fix' (which I did notice, dropped my acceleration a bit), and other random recalls, I've never had any engine, powertrain, or any other issues, ever (other than a tensioner pulley replacement - big whoop). Kinda sad to see this engine go, I felt it was nice for those average drivers who just wanted an affordable diesel (at the time), but didn't need 18-wheeler towing capacity or weight.

Just passed 3k miles on my 2022 Rebel Ecodiesel. Towed 7000k camper for 2k miles of that and love it! I knew there were two things I wanted to do before I even purchased the truck and those were the install of the banks derringer tuner and pedal monster. Those completely changed the truck in terms of that terrible and inconsistent throttle lag from a start and the tuner really woke up the engine. I couldn't be happier with the ecodiesel. Towing is so easy even on stock power levels, none of the drama I had towing with my 2018 Grand Cherokee 5.7 . Sure the 5.7 has power but it seems like is always working hard with lots of shifts from the tranny. I much prefer the extremely quiet and torquey diesel. On the 2k mile towing trip , we averaged right at 13.5 mpg with the 7k lb trailer. That's a mix of 70-75mph on interstates and some city driving and high mountain passes. Oil and transmission temps stayed way below what the 5.7 sees. So far , we really like this truck.

To say that my truck is a crutch is an understatement. I knew this going I to it. But the mileage is wonderful! I've been curious to see how that set up did with real people giving real answers. So if you have a moment, can you let me know please? If it can help with the lag off the start & give it a little extra power & make it a little Quicker, plus help mileage further.... Heck, I'm in then!

I purchased a used 2016 Ram 1500 with the Ecodiesel with almost 80,000 miles on it. Fortunately, I also purchased an extended warranty; within 3 weeks, the cam sensor malfunctioned, essentially trashing the engine. Fortunately, it was covered by the warranty, resulting in a brand new engine for $100. I love the performance of the engine; the truck is our family driver, due to cab size-lots of leg room front and back-and fuel mileage. Around town-we’re in rural Utah, so virtually no stop-and-go traffic-we get 23-24 mpg, and out on the open highway, we get 30 mpg easily. Hopefully the cam sensor defect has been taken care of, as it was a known defect; I know I have at least another 80,000 miles on it. I don’t tow huge loads, so the ~7600 lb towing capacity doesn’t really bother me. It does what I need it to do and it does it well…

I have a 2022 ecodiesel with the 3.92 rear end. I pull a farrier trailer which only weighs 2,800 lbs but rarely unhook from it. The truck pulls the trailer like it is not back there and get 20-22 mpg pulling it. I have a 34 ft camper that weighs 9,000 lb dry so loaded I’d guess 10,000. I have more than enough power to pull it with ease. I added air bags to the rear of the truck and with the farrier trailer I run 18 psi in the air bags and 80 psi with the camper. The truck suspension and tires are really not heavy enough for the camper but I only tow it 100 miles to and from a horse show 3 times a year so I can deal with that. I get around 13 pulling the camper which I live in Missouri and we have hills. I get 30-35 mpg without the trailer more on flat ground. I’ve had both the 6.4 and 5.7 hemi and loved them both, they just didn’t get the fuel mileage I get with the ecodiesel. The 5.7 I had I put a cold air intake and changed the exhaust and was a crotch rocket far as running and towing but the fuel mileage wouldn’t compare to the ecodiesel and with the camper the ecodiesel would it pull the 5.7 in my opinion. With fuel prices the way they are I figured the cost per mile and was saving $125- $150 per week in fuel savings with the miles I weekly run during peak season. The only trouble I have had is fuel quality in my area and the service engine light will sometimes come on when I get biodiesel at certain places. I put Hot Shots fuel and injector cleaner in the truck and run a tank of regular diesel and the light goes out, it never runs bad during any of the process. I service my own truck every 10,000 miles, I run Mobile 1 synthetic diesel engine oil and change the oil and fuel filter each time. It cost me around $102 to service the truck, at the dealership they want $300 which it is 2.5 qts more oil then changing a gas engine. I’m not paying them a jacked up price for service because it is a diesel when the oil is only $4/gal higher than the oil for gas as engine. All in all I’m very satisfied with the ecodiesel

I don't think truck owners are ready for the inconvenience of charging the truck every night and on the road waiting in line off the freeway in sweltering heat or freezing cold. When you are towing or just a loaded bed. The battery charge will drop even faster. I think internal combustion engine including diesel are going to hold their value even more so. Since they will be cutting production of them. Stay tuned!!

I will say I really like my 3rd gen '20 ecodiesel. It is a great motor. Towing is always a catch 22, I have a Limited with a 10,800 towing. As for as the 3l dmax has its list of issues. That is part of why for '23 they have a version 2. Whe the 3l dmax came out its towing was low at 9300/9500lbs, but again stepping up to a ltz or high country you were looking at under 9k. I'm no brand loyalist and will say the dmax has better unloaded and loaded acceleration than the ecodiesel. I find that the short lived 3l powerstroke had better acceleration and just as good milage as the ecodiesel. I've driven all three but only have the ecodiesel. All in all it's sad to see it leave, the powerstroke leave, and I believe by 2025/26 the dmax will be gone as well.

It wasn’t that popular because it was a $4000 option! I have a 2016 model, and it runs great. But I’m not towing 10,000 pounds everywhere I go. The greenies have been allowed to $hit on everything that runs on diesel or gas…. While they are enjoying blackouts and the inability to charge their “E” trucks….I’ll be driving down the road (560 miles plus per tank)… MY THOUGHTS would be KEEP making the diesel!

I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel and it was great until they retuned it for the EPA. They increased the lag horribly (3 seconds from the time you hit the throttle and the time it moves) and it always felt like I had a camper trailer on the back of it. We had it dealer serviced since it came with a maintenance contract, changed oil every 5K miles (2x more often than FCA suggested), changed fuel filters every 15K and took really good care of it, but it locked up on me one day without warning 200 miles into a 225 mile road trip. This happened 4000 miles after the dealer changed the EGR cooler under recall along with the intake manifold, valve covers and turbo hoses due to them melting (1 step before engine fire, I was told). I had already had a front main seal leak fixed twice (1 warranty, 1 under ext. warranty 4K before it blew) a brake booster (my 21 year old F150 still has the original), windshield squirters disintegrated, the leather dash peeled 2x (1 under warranty), the windshield cowl strip fell apart at 5 years old and made farting sounds at highway speeds (never had one fall apart even on antiques). The rubber roof gutter strips are now coming loose because they used foam tape to hold them on. An engineer I know from FCA told me they knew these engines wouldn't work well in the USA due to the tolerances not being designed for the soot load of EGR systems, but Fiat forced them. My brand new $13K engine with only 25K on it has already had the front timing cover seal go bad and the thing consumes oil, about a quart every 500 miles (the original never did, at least until it puked all of it on the highway from the big hole in the block). It's been waiting for the fuel pump recall for over a year, I'm running some Hotshots in every tank and hoping for the best. This vehicle felt and performed like a very premium SUV when it was new but it has squeaks and rattles now. It stinks as it drives great, had decent power, towed well the couple of times I towed with it and got great fuel economy, but the quality is horrible. They used too much plastic under hood and went with the cheapest bidder on anything they could. My extended warranty expires October 14, 2024 and I'm trading it in October 13th. I've hear great things about the newer Ecos but would neve risk it again especially with all of the emissions complexity of diesels. I like the new Rams with the Hurricane or even the new electric/gas model, but it seems like it takes them 5+ years to address the design flaws. Not sure what I'll buy. Toyota sounds good for reliability (not lately, but they at least stand behind it), but they are boring. Might have to spruce up my 21 year old F150 Harley Edition and just use it as my DD again:-).

Also, the ED is NOT a $4995 cost when compared to the Hemi given that the V6 gasser is the standard engine in most trims. The Hemi is a $2800 option and the ED is a $2200 cost over the Hemi. If you are going to bother making a video at least get the information you want to present correct and supported.

I am a taller guy. With a taller son. My grandson may be taller too! A Wrangler or Gladiator are not roomy enough. My wife has an '18 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L Cummins. The Cummins is a beast! But the weight is 2,200# heavier than my Ecodiesel. The Ecodiesel is smoother to drive on ice or on snow. The Cummins would be okay with the 4cyl version and an 8-speed ZF transmission. Would absolutely be perfect in a Powerwagon. The Ecodiesel in a powerwagon with 4.56 gears, and 35" tires from the factory would have been a good option too!

In overseas markets it is very popular. In GC’s mainly and the market is really annoyed that they killed it. Like all turbo diesels these days it suffers from the particulate environmental issues. Shoving it back into the intake manifolds and ultimately the sump is crazy. Oil pickups block, as do inlet manifolds and exhausts, performance drops, engines fail. They improved this on last unit, but needed a retrofit to get their support story in order! The 3.0 ecodiesel pulls like a train for those loads that a 1500Ram or Grand Cherokee should have. It doesn’t compete with the Cummins in larger trucks.

2018 Eco Diesel FAILED! EGR Failed twice, so I had Dodge do the delete. I was just about to change the front brake pads for the first time (I tow a heavy trailer once a week, but am slow to accelerate and brake, therefore gentle on my equipment) BUT at 135K kms, the bottom end went! Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in Dodge releasing an untested engine! Of course it's out of warranty. Dodge said they would have covered it under 'good will', but because an EGR delete was done (and by the Dodge dealership no less) they won't cover it! I only had the delete done because they released such a flawed engine that suffocates itself! I wanted the 'Eco' part of the name too! Dodge is harming relationships between clients and dealerships. Dealerships shouldn't need to cover the lack of support by Dodge.

You cannot get a standard bed with a bench seat unless you go for the custom trail boss, which I don't want because of the lack of options in the trim. The EDs not dead it’s just coming out of the 1500s. The Hemi & Pentastar may follow by the end of 23. Instead of Three engines to meet our needs, The alternate of choice that they are going to let us looks to be three versions of the same new 3 L six cylinder gas motor. A single turbo, a TwinTurbo high output, and the base motor Plus battery and electric motor as a hybrid. The bean counters will win at least hypothetically on paper. Whether Ram continues to gain market share or lose market share with this strategy remains to be seen. As to the powertrains. The 10 speed still seems to be quirky & problematic in the trucks. I don’t like that the GMs cannot be tuned such as for improving the exhaust brake and cruise control operations EGR etc. That said I like the power; 305 HP 495 TQ. I see EOC’s dyno sheet for the Ram (with only the stage 1 tune) shows 50 HP and 30 ish torque at the wheels plus better mileage etc. Since Rams is rated 260 HP 480 TQ I suppose this would conservatively translate to 310 HP 510 TQ. Pretty comparable. Naturally you would not have to contend with EGR on a tuned truck. Still you would likely want the 3.92 gear to outperform the GM in acceleration or towing Or the 3.21 & tune to beat GMs fuel economy. It’s a hands-down better truck then the fourth GEN truck and motor. He just placed an order for another. I also recently bought a 22 2500 Cummins which I don’t regret for my needs but I wouldn’t hesitate to order one of the new fifth GEN EDs. Some of the 2020’s already over 100k miles very few issues.

The end of Ram & Jeep The EV WOKE “Green New Deal” movement is the biggest scam in power generation utilities and consumer automotive history; especially in the truck & large suv segment that require heavy payloads, medium to long rage towing, extended off road use and long distance travel applications. Do the math: “Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine fuel source, carrying 38 kilowatt hours of energy in every gallon - 27 times that of lithium ion batteries.” Dropping diesel, gas and then PHEV engines, totally nuts as everyone seems to forget about the limitations of todays power grid. Like diesel and gasoline, the energy density of coal and natural gas are superior to the best lithium batteries for power generation and “energy storage”. In fact, it may take up to 30 years and trillions of dollars in constant upgrades to provide reliable and affordable net zero green power generation & power energy storage just to attempt to keep up with the increasing EV charging demands, not to mention the massive growing illegal foreign migration being allowed into the USA at alarming rates. In fact, it is estimated that these undocumented, illegal immigrants will increase power grid utility demands over 25% yearly if the trend doesn’t stop immediately. Further, as coal and natural gas power plants are being replaced with wind, solar and costly battery storage required to balance the grid, states doing so on large scales are FAILING; resulting in both blackouts and consumers leaving the states by masses unable to afford the significant constant utility bill increases, required for net zero power generation / battery energy storage. In conclusion: It’s totally premature to delete natural gas & coal power generation, diesel, v8 gas and then PHEV engines being replaced by today’s unaffordable EV trucks and large SUVs that are also dysfunctional in many applications and green energy power generation all require expensive degrading toxic battery storage, the mathematical realities are already proving doing so at this point in time is absolutely nuts.

I love the driving dynamics of the Ram 1500 (for a pickup). I would have purchased an Ecodiesel, but my reliability concerns with the engine and the almost comically low payload numbers for Ram trucks put it out of contention. The Duramax was awfully tempting, (I own a 3500HD Duramax), but the new GM trucks are so hideously ugly that that one dropped off the list as well. For a small diesel, I was left with a Colorado or and F-150. The Lion F-150 engine is not a stand-out, but it's does waht I need and it's reliable. So far I'm at 70,000 miles with no issues at all. A Titan fuel tank gives me 1200 miles of usable range. Finally, the aluminum body was one of the biggest factors in my purchasing decision. I would have loved to see an F-150 with a Duramax and coil spring suspension, but life is full of compromises.
