yes it was excellent. inventive engineering at work. one suggestion to Nick... why not offer an option on these vehicles to place a high efficiency solar panel on the roof (and or on the bed covers) instead of the option to give the occupants a double long panorama roof? take the power from the panel and use it in the truck the same way eTorque uses the extra regen from the system? also it seems an option to add capacity to the onboard battery would benefit this power storage. i want a truck that cools itself on hot Summer days.

RAM need to advertise these unknown aspects of eTorque. Most consumers will think of it as a gas saver only and that is limited to about + 1 MPG or so, which makes the payback (5 years at about 12K mi/yr) look less attractive at current gas prices. The payback is quicker if you consider all the advantages saved in wear and tear on brakes and trans in addition to the gas saving. This was very informative and well done guys.
@zoopsoop6 жыл бұрын
Wear and tear on transmissions should not be a realistic concern for cost savings. A good transmission, which FCA has no idea how to build, should last well into 300,000kms before rebuild. Brake pads are always a consumable item, which is usually far cheaper than other parts that can be used to slow the vehicle.

Thanks for the review, it's good to hear a legit engineering explanation of the eTorque because the dealership couldn't quite handle it. This is a great vehicle and the eTorque is excellent. I've had the 2019 Ram Laramie Longhorn (fully loaded) for about 4 months. 2 specific things to note. First: I can, as well as the passengers, feel the eTorque transfer when slowing to a stop...likely the regenerative breaking. It's not terrible, but it can be annoying during city driving when you're stopping a lot...otherwise, it's pretty imperceptible. Secondly is that the fuel mileage is not quite what is claimed. Around town driving I am seeing 13-15 and highway is around 17-19. I also tow a travel trailer (7k weight) with it and it does well, but of course, the mileage is single digits, which I fully expected. I do drive more aggressively than most and, in Texas, speed limits are higher than some other states, so I know that's partly to blame for less than expected ratings. I have seen others complain about fuel efficiency as well...something to think about if you're researching to buy one. The 12" screen is AMAZING...and fortunately has only had a few quirks over the months, but nothing worth mentioning. In general, the truck is a wonderful piece of artwork and machinery. I wouldn't trade it for any other truck on the market right now. That is until they put the 12" screen in the heavy duty Ram...then I'll upgrade! :)

Great vid - but Matt you are at least slightly incorrect about the fuel savings being made up quickly, and the reaction of Nick shows it. He skips right from his, "ehhh" to 'its the comfort factor too' - because you'd need to keep the truck for at least 100,000 miles before you'd see any cost savings, let alone something substantial. If you go from 18mpg avg, to 20mpg average for example - on 100,000 miles thats a savings of 555 gallons of fuel. At an average cost of $2.50 a gallon - theres $1387, so when this costs $1400, you'd be just breaking even after the truck is very old (generally) and the warranty ends. You'd really only see a benefit on the V6 model, as its standard - should've been the same on the V8 for at least Laramie trims and above. Hybrid systems are a great idea, but you can buy a lot of gas for a couple grand, and as described in the crude example above, there are no savings until much much further down the road, or unless you drive a lot. And remember thats just a fuel cost, if it breaks once, you're right back in the hole, and likely pretty far down.

I partially agree but I am intrigued by 2 other cost saving benefits. Less Brake wear so less pads, and rotors needing turned or replaced

Sorry but not done... with general and trailer travel with pets, I frequently have to leave the truck run just to make a quick bathroom stop or when I’m hitching up the boat when it only 75-80 degrees. I can see how the battery can run the AC for a short time. Lastly we have to keep experimenting and only then will we grow the technology and it best use scenarios. Maybe even avoid paying if the gas guzzler tax is reinstated.

Thanks so much for having Nick Kappa the actual Ram specialist on board. This truck blows away my 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500. There are already two recalls on the Ram 1500 though. The battery cable needs to be checked and the adjustable brake pedal system. One very important must have is the larger fuel tank. Personally if I were selling these trucks I wouldn't sell one without the largest possible fuel tank available. It's a known fact these big 8 cylinder vehicles aren't great on gas, and especially if we're going to be towing a heavy trailer around the country, the further we can go without fearing running out of gas the better. Any salesman who doesn't recommend ordering this vehicle with the larger fuel tank should loose his job. Also Ram needs to come up with a better rear bumper kinda like the Chevy type so it's got a wider platform on the ends for easier stepping up into the bed. Please also check the tailgate cables because on my 2019 Ram 1500 only the passenger side cable is tight and doing all the supporting. I've never seen this before on any of my vehicles with tailgates. Otherwise I'm happy with my 2019 Ram 1500 e-torque. I've never had a heated steering wheel but it's awesome. I just wish it had three levels of heat like the seats. I think the trailer mirror option is very neat because they flip up when needed for trailering. This multi functional versatility is what I really like. Same goes for the rear recliner style seats. I also went with the front bench seat so I can seat three if necessary or need to put a big cooler up front. The bench front seat with both sides fully electric and height adjustable with lumbar is extremely comfortable not only for me but for my passenger. The full air suspension is also such a delight. Thanks again for interviewing the actual engineers and true experts. Another great video idea is to compare the vehicle with the same version but in the competition's brand.

This engine and the eTorque system make a power train that just always seems to do everything right. The auto stop and start is so smooth that I actually leave it on. And the way it drives overall is also very good. It rides smoother over the many potholes in my area than my Silverado with the Z71 package does. Update: The area I live in is pretty flat. I took a long trip through several states and was very pleased with how well it held the speed when going down steep mountain passes.

...driving style has more to do with MPG's than that gimmick Etorque thing (though the start/stop function is a factor, as well... not buying the assist part, though. pretty sure that's all gimmick as far as mpg's are concerned). Want better MPG's? Coast the truck longer before anticipated stops. Back off the accelerator sooner than you usually do. Try to time stops to where you barely need to tap on the brake pedal. That's the real secret.... Well that and driving 40mph and getting the trans to 8th gear at that speed (by backing off the accelerator to a coasting condition. at around 35mph. The MPG gauge should be pegged out past or near the 30mpg mark, at speeds of 35-45 mph if done correctly. you'll lose that 30+ bar value to about a value of 22 mpg, if the trans drops into 6th/7th, though... so it's a bit of a balancing act.. And maybe a bit of computer training, as well. The trans learns ur driving habits... thus will hold gears longer the more heavy footed u are). Also... it takes a small bit of warming up before ECO mode will activate. Maybe, about a mile? (at least that's what I've noticed...) not much of a factor, but may interfere with playing the game of pegging out the mpg graphic bar @ 35mph, too early in a drive.

I have the V8 E-Torque. Although I may experience a slight MPG improvement, any savings in gas will never be able to recover the $1,500 up-charge over the standard V8 over the life of the truck. Other concerns I have, as a new model, are what costs will be involved when components of the E-Torque system require replacement in the future. I'm sure the E-Torque charging unit (Generator), or the battery will be costly. The engine turning off and on is not really even noticeable, however, living in Arizona, when the engine shuts off the air conditioning gets noticeably luke-warm, and has a kind of moldy gym smell about it. Love the truck, but am not sold on the E-Torque just yet.

I have a 2019 1500 Big Horn with e-torque and the auto start stop. I can definitely tell when it turns off. The vehicle also mimics a slight tap on the bumper from the vehicle behind (no vehicle actually behind). It is quick to restart as soon as I lift my foot off the brake pedal it starts back up (slight lunge forward) caution not to be to close to the vehicle in front of you.

yes, just got a 2022 limited. Like that the engine stops when I'm in a drive through but don't like the amount of brake pressure needed for it to stay off and not start moving on me. I suppose if it does get away from me the ebrake will stop me from hitting the car in front of me though lol
@boatdoctor1005 жыл бұрын
The only problem with the stop start mode is when your at a stop light on a hot day for more them 60 seconds, the AC is not working. It gets hot in the cab pretty fast when its 90+ degrees. I personally turn if off at start up.
@Hydra360ci2 жыл бұрын
yeah... kinda funny that the video doesn't mention anything about the A/C compressor turning off and that the A/C is not working when stopped... they state the opposite. Typical Folks think oh... the vents are blowing air...so the A/C is obviously still on. Not realizing it's blowing hot air.

I have a 2022 Limited with eTorque and it's not quit as smooth as they. It would be nice if the engine would wait until the truck comes to a complete stop before it turns off. It makes it difficult to make a smooth stop and if you let up on the brake a little to smooth out the stop, the engine restarts. Overall I love the truck

Nick provides a really good explanation of the eTorque system. I understand his frustration with people turning off start/stop since it seems they worked hard on it. However, the truck has pretty bad A/C, which is probably the number 1 reason people turn the feature off. Having the engine off during a 90 second stop light on a day of 90+ degrees is a deal breaker for most folks. The cabin heats up too quickly. Also, 20 MPG? A man can only dream... 13-14 MPG in the city, 17 MPG on the highway is what this truck does. I don't know how FCA was able to put those MPG values on the truck's sticker. I haven't heard anyone getting anywhere close to the advertised MPG.

I couldn't agree with you more about the A/C. I just purchased a 2023 Bighorn 5.7L and I live in Florida. The first time I came to a stop with the eTorque on I thought something happened to the A/C. No way I can deal with that in the MANY 90+ days in Florida. I'll keep the eTorque off and the A/C blowing cold!

@@mikec9311 oh wait till the stop start unavailable pops up. That shit freaked me out. Than engine light came on. The stop start is a mess! Also fuel injectors go out quick on these, big time. I get 17 around town and almost 22 on highway without using start stop function or etorque. If my trips were longer I'm sure I could get 25 plus on longer hauls. I have a 23 and a friend of mine uses start stop and etorque on his 22 and he's at an average 19mpg. So I don't see a benefit of using the system. It's like 4x4 you have it when you need it.

Does the engine speed scrub during shifts relieve stress on trans clutches and does Ram remove clutch discs because of it or do they leave the clutches alone to increase trans durability?
