@Rondell Schuyler I meant comparing modern vs old engines. As far as gas vs diesel, the 6.4 hemi currently has more hp and torque than, say, the old 5.9 cummins. The supercharged engine would make even more power. But on the flip side, you could always build up an old cummins into a monster. And as far as a modern gas vs a modern diesel engine, then of course the diesel will out perform the gas engine. It'll be interesting to see how Cummins' upcoming gas engines perform compared to diesels.

I have the 3.6 in a jeep Grand Cherokee with the 8 speed. I took a trip in Colorado a couple years back pulling a 3500lb trailer. Over 5 or 6 passes at least 3 => than the ike. I could hold 70 on every one that speed limit allowed:). Over all for the trip I averaged 16mpg which was impressive. The Toyota tundra 4.7 in the group with an extra 1000 lbs on the trailer averaged 8mpg. The 3500lb trailer probably had more wind drag. Point being this engine is great for most. Id say regular towing of up to 5000lbs is fine. In the video it clearly did really well with 7000lbs considering its size and the load. But if towing was a regular thing the 5.7 is a must.

I gotta say, with working at a Jeep Chrysler dealership for a few years I was always a must have a V8 in the Grand Cherokees as the 3.7 was gutless. The 3.6 with the old 6 speed was good but not great. I recently was given a 2016 grand limited with the 3.6/8speed combo when my ram was getting brakes done. That thing flat out flew. I was super impressed with it. Plus it was averaging 25 mpg when I had it. I seriously couldn't say enough good things about it.

Great real test. Although the V6 was maxed out, I noticed that you were still passing other trucks and trailers on the hills. Yes, they were probably heavier trailers, but still... And, the V6 version missed the benchmark, but only by 41 seconds. Over an 8 mile uphill route, I'd say it still did the job. Bottom line, if you're going to tow 7000 lbs, especially in hills, get the V8. But, if you're not towing often and only towing about half the weight, then I think the V6 is a viable choice. Thanks guys.

I want to give a little update. As I said in the comments, I went out and bought a 2019 RAM 1500 Lone Star w/3.6 etorque 2wd. I love the truck. My one disappointment early on is the gas mileage. I thought I was going to get better gas mileage. I live in a really flat area of the country. I haven't hauled anything. With 900 miles so far, my dash says that I'm averaging 17.5 mpg. That's with a lot of highway driving. I am intentionally driving really easy and consistently to try to maximize mpg. This is just from the dash computation. I will calculate it in the next couple of fill ups. I understand that the mileage should go up after the initial break in period. So, with 900 miles on the odometer, that should start improving. Still, I love the truck. But, if this is the gas mileage, then I wish I would have gotten the V8 that sounds like it gets the same mpg. I will post another update after some more miles and fill ups.

I'm thinking the same, or maybe they are hauling 6K lbs. but on smaller rolling hills and relatively flat terrain. This testing was just neat to see what happens when this is done. No overheating (although kinda close) or breakdown issue doing it. If nothing else, it shows that there IS a big difference between the V6 and V8, if nothing else for the torque (~265 lb.-ft. vs. 410 lb.-ft.), with the little extra weight of airbags, the beefy V8, and heavier transmission practically entirely off-set and even mostly unimpactful towards fuel economy [in this scenario]).
@jonathanmazzella12476 жыл бұрын
@@DeltaSierra426 Completely agree. I think the only thing the real big offset is in used prices. You can pick up a v6 usually 7-10k cheaper than a Hemi (model to model). But your right the hemi vs v6 mpg difference towing, does not make up for the lack of power (in this scenario).

Yeah but tests like this keep manufacturers honest about how they rate their tow ratings. up until recently truck manufacturers seemed to just make up the tow ratings out of thin air. Clearly 7k pounds was a safe limit for this truck adding 500-1000 more pounds would have been potentially unsafe!

I just went from a Grand Cherokee overland with the 5.7 to a 2019 1500 classic with 3.6 and 3.55. I haven’t had a chance to tow with it yet but the 8 speed transmission has unlocked the pentastar and my opinion of losing all that jam. The GC had air suspension too and in our mountains it gets cold! The compressor was constantly overworking and wouldn’t adjust the ride height as it was “cooling down”, plus when the rear airbags went it was $2600 fix. I’m happy to return to analog suspension. The Hemi had punch and easily passed at highway speed but the payload was so small on my GC, I’ve got the same tow rating (7200lbs) with my Classic with a higher payload and I’m not too concerned about pulls off the line when I take the fam camping. The SLT trim has retained enough of the luxury finishes that at $39k (CAD) I’m extremely satisfied with my 2019 Ram 1500 Classic.

Kudos to this series of videos and all the comments. I am considering a purchasing a 2019 Ram 1500 but can't decide between the 3.6 and the Hemi. I have been out of the truck world for about 40 years (since I was kid in rural NM). My wife and I live in Madison, WI, where we have not needed a truck. However, a few months ago, we bought some a some land in the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan, which is about a six hour drive from Madison. We decided that we would get a small travel trailer RV to use when we go up there. Once we made that decision, we knew we had to get a truck because our small SUV only has a towing capacity of 1500 lbs, but we were looking at RVs with dry weights of 2000 to 3500 lbs. We thought a Honda Ridgeline would be perfect, since it has a towing capacity of 5000 lbs. So we bought the Ridgeline a few months ago and then several weeks ago bought our travel trailer, a Little Guy Mini Max, which has dry weight of just under 2000 lbs. But in our maiden RV trip up there recently, the Ridgeline really struggled. The mpg dropped from 28-29 mpg for the same trip to around 12 mpg. More importantly, a "transmission fluid too hot" warning light came on during the drive up there and the drive home. We had to pull over for a half hour each time to let it cool. There are some hills on the just under six hour drive but no NOTHING even close to mountains. All of sudden, a 5.75 hour drive had turned into an eight hour one. Clearly, the Ridgeline is not up to the task. So we are looking to get a bigger truck. Though we are also considering some other trucks (especially the F150), if we decide on a Ram, what would be better for our situation, the Ram 3.6 or the Ram 5.7 Hemi? Any and all opinions greatly appreciated!!

excellent vid and commentary as always. As a nitpick from a new subscriber (doing research for my first truck at 40 years old), y'all blast the music at a volume and length of time that's kinda excessive. Mind you, I love rock and metal, but going from conversation to music to both simultaneously makes me constantly adjust the volume levels when I'm watching on my PC or when listening with headphones in. Just some constructive criticism from someone who just found the TFL channels last week who loves the quality AND quantity of the work y'all do! Oh, and thanks for all the vids on the Rams 1500's!

Towed a trailer with a 1960's Willys Wagon and loaded with parts 180 miles. About 6,000 lbs from Richmond VA to Baltimore MD and got 16 mpg average. At 67,000 it is a reliable choice for anybody with "domestic" truck requirements. It rides nice, hauls trash, lumber, furniture, appliances, an occasional camper, and my family.

@david Daniel I think Chrysler /FCA made a big mistake by dropping the mid level 4.7 v8 some yrs ago. I have driven dodge trucks for over42 yrs and when looking for a new truck this last yr I looked at what the ram had to offer. Not much. Either a v6 that was underpowered for what I had to tow, or a nearly 400 hp v8 that was excessive. I didn’t want the penalty of a gas guzzler v8, that’s why I sold my ‘98 ram with. 5.9 because of the gas it used when not towing. So I got a ford 2.7 with tow pkg, great mpg’s and will tow 7700 lbs, same as my old dodge

Hello again Andre and Nathan! But the fact the E-Torque Hemi is available in the Tradesmen and still under 48k, especially at certain dealers I’ve seen regular Hemi Tradesmen Crew Cab 4x4, with 3:92 gearing at 40k out the door with all incentives! As far as downhill, of course the bigger engine will have more braking power to use engine vacuum to slow down. So I’ll take mine in a TRI-White Coat Laramie, with the reg Hemi, 3:55 gearing and the Brown/Frost Interior! With the Tow Package and 33 gal gas tank! That I’ve seen on Dealer lots here in Central Florida for the great price of 46k!

Great review, great comparison, but you need to take the background music off of Hemi mode. Its hard to hear what you guys are saying. I own both the Hemi in my 1500 Ram pickup and the v6 in my Heep Grand Cherokee. Both engines are great, and well suited for the application I have them in.
