Sometimes I think about recommending videos like these to my friends. I know, without a doubt, they'd be terribly bored by them. But for me, to see all the windows and shop fronts and faces, and to imagine the stories and connections that go on within them, that makes me super happy and gives me a sense of wonderment. I get a sense of goodwill for all people that comes from that. (Virtual) travel really is an amazing antidote for societies ills, I think.

Amen - I am 100% the same way. I went to visit Tokyo soon 10 years now, and I kept wanting to visit the smaller parts of town, the villages andwhatnot to get a sense of the daily lives etc, and not the clichè touristy things. Needless to say - after seeing this, I am going back! :D

Love to share some information and story - legend states that Kukai, the first master of Japan's esoteric Buddhist tradition, founded Nishiarai Daishi Temple way back in the ninth century when he stopped by the area to preach. Buddhist rites were apparently held to help the local villagers who were worried about an epidemic of the disease in the area. After three weeks of prayer and ritual, the story goes that clean, fresh water gushed up from out of a well, helping to cure those who were afflicted. Such piety remains to this day as the temple, known officially as Soji-ji and one of the three top Shingon Buddhist temples of the Buzan branch, sees scores of believers visiting to pray for help with illness. There is one fascinating shio Jizo stone statue at the temple that is covered with salt. People with warts come here to pray, the custom being that you take a little pinch of salt with you after your prayers and if your warts disappear, you return with twice the amount of salt you took.

OH MY GOD IT'S NISHIARAI! This was the first place I stayed at in Japan, at Emblem Hostel. This is forever burned into my mind is my favorite place in the entire world. I am literally crying seeing that you uploaded a video of the area.
@w1z4rd92 жыл бұрын
May I hear your story?
@mattheModest2 жыл бұрын
@@w1z4rd9 Well of course, but I don't really know what to say. I went to Japan completely on a whim, and ended up booking a room with my then girlfriend at a cheap hostel which happened to be Emblem Hostel in Nishiarai. My time during that trip to Japan made me realize what happiness, and inner calm, actually is. I have never felt such a complete LACK of anxiety as when I was in Japan, especially in Nishiarai. Also the staff at Emblem are some of the most inviting and wonderful people I have ever met. I was coming home one night and heard the music playing by the lobby/bar area and how much I enjoyed it and came up with some suggestions to add to the list. One thing led to another and I ended up essentially making a 30-ish song playlist which is the bulk of their "evening playlist" that I believe they still use at the hostel. Also, just sitting outside at like 4 AM, up way too early due to jetlag and grabbing some onigiri from the Family Mart near the station watching the sun come up... I know all of this sounds like something mediocre etc, but it really was a life changing experience for me and I have sworn, since then, to make it my life's goal to move to Nishiarai.

At 3:31. The road overpass has some unusual engineering features. Notice the tensioning screws between the abutment and the road deck. And, on the next section, over the road, there are a set of heavy duty chain attachments between the road deck and the abutments. I wonder if this is an earthquake safety feature.
