My grandfather had a 59 Silver Hawk exactly like this that he bought new. So awesome to see this one nice and original and in great shape! Thanks a lot for filming this one!

Studebaker dropped the big Packard 354 V8 after 1956. They supercharged their 289 V8 in the Golden Hawk and got the same 275 horsepower as the very heavy Packard, but with better performance and handling. The fins on the Hawks were also fiberglass and just glued onto the rear 'Speedster' model fenders. Most people think Studebaker bought Packard when Packard was going bankrupt, but Pratt & Whitney bought Packard, then bought Studebaker a little later. Pratt & Whitney screwed up when they shut down the big Packard production line in Detroit and moved all production to Studebaker's South Bend, Indiana works. Studebaker's line was too narrow to produce 'big' luxury Packards and few 'Packardbakers' (re-badged Studebakers) were sold. Studebaker shut down the South Bend factories, but continued building the Lark models in Canada for a few years. The Studebaker Museum in Southbend is a great place to visit. There is also a Packard Museum in Warren, Ohio that is worth a visit. The original Packard was built by a druggist in Warren.

Nice car, interesting it has a flat head in 59. My friend had a 56 or 57 with OHV V8, great cars.

Yeah, they really hung onto that flathead six for a while. I believe Chrysler kept using theirs until 1960 too. The OHV V8's from Studebaker were really strong runners though.

Studebaker, Hudson and Packard always make for a fun ride. Now we all drive look a like cars, with no character. Shame on the automotive designers. • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂

You're right, it's really a shame that so many great automakers went out of business. Thanks for taking a look!

Studebaker made really good looking coupes for over 20 years - I like them all but I would be tempted to do a Restomod to this one , keep the original appearance but fit a 350 Chev and overdrive auto , updated brakes and steering.

I agree completely, I don't think I could live with the flathead six in there. Thanks for watching!

@@RamblinAround I can understand not wanting the six, but this is a rare combination that should be preserved as a collector piece. That said, if you're going to put a V8 in it, put in a Studebaker engine. I always cringe when someone puts a different brand engine (typically Chevy) in a vintage car. I understand the practicalities involved, but doing so greatly reduces its historical and collectable value. These cars are time machines and so rare. Don't destroy them, even in part.

1959 was a year all the manufacturers were designing small cars with good gas mileage because the US was in a recession. Pretty understandable this car has the 6 cyl.. These competed in the economy runs of the period. Beautiful styling.

Is that aquamarine color an original Studebaker color? ... First time I've seen that color on a Studebaker.

As a senior Chilean, I remember that in 1941 Studebaker amazed the market with its great variety of colors, some very striking and not all pretty to my liking. But I think there is no color that is not orderly. The catalog was impressive because of the color of the cars, at a time when all the brands offered very few colors, generally gray, blue, black and stop counting. On the cover of the 1941 catalog was a President Sedan 4 doors, of an intense indigo green color, which I liked very much. Still today, I keep many Studebaker catalogs of those years. Some of my uncles were the main Imdebaker importers and importers in my country: Küpfer Brothers.
