I love Eurylochus so much, too, and after thunder saga, I've gone into full-blown analysis mode for his character. I have been contemplating how he parallels Odysseus and his character arc is kind of Odysseus' but in reverse with him starting out more ruthless to protect the crew but actually starting to greet the world with open arms after Circe and how Odysseus inspired that in him by saving the crew without the need for such violence and sacrifice and how him killing the cow seems to mirror Odysseus killing the infant. Eurylochus is such a fantastic and fascinating character to me, and I'd love even more from him, RIP Eurylochus 🙏.
@masterhazrond
@masterhazrond 4 ай бұрын
He reflects Odysseus, but one thing i've noticed is that in his decision making he reflects negatively. Where Ody's decisions are generally the only correct option to move forwards (regardless of how they make him feel), the things that Eurylochus does are usually ultimately the *wrong* move. Eurylochus wants to raid the island and take the food (which would have lead to the men eating lotus). Eurylochus questions Odysseus infront of the entire crew openly and sows unneeded dissent. Eurylochus opens the bag and unleashes the storm. Eurylochus wants to run away and leave the men to die. Each time he makes or tries to make a decision he chooses *poorly* and this culminates in his invocation of Odysseus' phrase "I'm Just A Man" where when Odysseus says that phrase he ultimately makes the *right* decision even when it causes himself pain. Meanwhile Eurylochus invokes "I'm Just A Man" and then slaughters Apollo's cow, making the *wrong* decision that he thinks will ease his pain, but that ultimately dooms himself and the rest of the crew.

I love Eurylochus. He was such a layered and interesting character. You even gave him the moral high ground when he turns to mutiny, which is rare for any mutiny scene. He didn't even kill Odysseous when he could! He knocked him out and called him "Odi" when he woke up despite Odysseous attempting to kill him. In fact, he wasn't mad about Odysseous trying to kill HIM. He was mad about the 6 men Odysseous sacrificed. His first lines were about food and the concern for hia crew...and he died a starving man unable to feed his crew...😢 He is such a tragic character!!! You completely upgraded him from the original version!

Yeah, even if he is a coward he has learned to stand up for his brothers ever since Puppeteer. @@yay29823 He wanted to prevent death since Polites TT-TT. After what happened with the cyclops and Poseidon, he really didn't want to lose anyone else. Neither he, Odysseous nor any of the crew knew magic, so they couldn't turn the men back. He had no idea Odysseous could convince her to turn them back. His flaw was he was not nearly knowledgeable enough of this world to lead. He was too aggressive when he needed to be softer, and too soft when he needed to be aggressive. He was the voice of the crew, which sadly meant he was too much of a follower to take command...

@@ChasehaWing Oh Polites :( Imagine being in his shoes. He has doubts, so he opens the bag, and instantly recognizes his mistake but it's already too late. 557 men die because of this. I think after that, his guilt was so much that he doubled down on trying to protect the crew, especially after what Odysseus told him in Puppeteer "There's no length I wouldn't go if it was you I had to save" 😭. @@DevilspadeEurylochus was willing to leave behind the men who had been turned into pigs because they had been transformed by magic that none of the crew understood. It may very well have been permanent and irreversible for all they knew. No one knew the danger until they had already lost men to Circe, so no one actively chose to lose them. Trying to save them would have put the rest of the crew at risk and was likely to accomplish nothing. In Scylla, the crew wouldn't have been at risk if Odysseus hadn't knowingly chosen to go through Scylla's lair. Odysseus knew beforehand that six men would need to die, and he did so intentionally. In the first case, Eurylochus is trying to save as many men as he knows how and he got upset when Odysseus ignored him and went to challenge Circe anyway. In the second case, Odysseus knowingly caused some of his own men to die for a chance to get home, so Eury got upset. Both events make sense for Eurylochus' character.

Ive been seeing a lot of hate for this character since the thunder sagas release, especially on tiktok, and im so glad you made this. People call him a hypocrite, but if you look at WHY he said the lines in both puppeteer and mutiny, his primary motive for not just those moments, but throughout the entire show is putting the crew above the mission itself, which naturally makes him a foil to odysseus.

Except when he wanted to abandon the men pigified by Circe!! But I do agree with you otherwise he speaks for the crew - even in killing Helios’ cattle. You say he puts the crew above the mission itself, but the mission itself IS the crew. I don't really see how he can hope that just giving up will somehow lead to Poseidon giving them mercy. Him opening the bag did nothing to help the crew, he just doubted Odysseus' intentions for basically no good reason (and because of that he ruined their only chance to escape a confrontation with Poseidon). After that point of confrontation there was no chance of the crew's survival unless they managed to evade Poseidon, and he never worked towards that goal in any way besides letting Odysseus come up with the plans. While Eurylochus *in theory* cares about the crew, all of his plans and his actions were ones that would have lead to their deaths (and ultimately *did* once Odysseus was unable to stop him from executing one such plan).

@@Lariatt It was! "I see a song of past romance" - Suffering "I see the sacrifice of man" - Different Beast "I see portrayals of betrayal" - Scylla "And a brother's final stand" - Mutiny Though you could argue "sacrifice of man" is for Scylla, "Betrayal" is Mutiny and "Brother's final stand" is Thunder Bringer, which would mean Different Beast got skipped. I'm not completely sure, since "I see you on the brink of death" could be Thunder Bringer considering the visuals of Ody falling into the water with the others. But it could also just be the next song, as it's aftermath. Either way, the No Longer You chorus (and backing chanting) totally foreshadowed what happened in this saga and it continues to foreshadow the rest of Epic.

I love Eurylochus so much that he constantly evolves or learn from his experiences over the course of the sagas in a similar way to odysseus but at the same time in opposite ways, Eurylochus was trying to do things right, finding in his crew a reason to keep fighting, and Odysseus trying to figure out where was the line between good and bad only to realize that nothing is set in stone and that he needed to make sacrifices if he wanted to achieve his goal. In the end I feel like Eurylochus and Polities were a bit similar in the sense that they both wanted the best for everyone on a level where the only thing that motivated them to believe that it would work was hope. While Odysseus evolved to understand that he needed much more than hope to achieve what he really wanted, and calculate the value of things around him to find out if it was really worth it the price. Eurylochus couldn't have carried the burden of sacrificing even one man, but Odysseus had had to deal with that before.

THIS! THIS RIGHT HERE IS THE REASON EPIC IS MY FAVOURITE MUSICAL! Every little detail has a meaning, everything is significant, there are no placeholders! Like how the start of The Horse and The Infant comes back in Monster, and it also comes back in Mutiny! The reprise of these small bits that seem unimportant at first is genius!

I love EPIC, and I love the cast. So I really hope you either get paid for everything so far. Or you sue them for not paying you. As long as it doesn’t cost you more than the trouble. But in my opinion sometimes “it’s not about the money, It’s about sending a message.” Go full joker on them.

I'm pretty sure when Eury sings its him being emotional and or selfish, but when he "raps", it's usually like a mission report or a situation where he "turns off" his emotion to be professional and a soldier. In Full Speed Ahead, he knows Ody is feeling guilty and is being gentle with him when he brings up the issue of food. When he's suggesting they raid a town, it's really just a suggestion. What he thinks is best for the crew, and what is the obvious choice to him- but it's not his decision. In Cyclops Saga, he has smaller lines. "I have to hand it to you both, this is quite the treat", and "where do we attack him" both being sing-y, but with where do we attack having more of the background beat. He's still following orders. In Storm, he has singing lines as well, but so does everyone. He's doing his best to follow orders and is trusting Ody to get them through this. (Bonus "Wut?") In Luck runs out, he's singing and trying to reason with Ody to be careful- appealing to his emotions on behalf of the crew. "We could be caught off-guard" line is more rhythmic, and it's where he's pushing his boundaries a bit with Ody. Then he swaps back to singing on "I just don't want to see another life end", another appeal to emotions, whether he meant to or not. In Circe, Puppeteer, he's singing when he's trying to confess about the wind bag, but he's shut down, and goes back to a firm "okay". When he returns, he's still singing, cause he's scared and rattled, but once he composes himself, he starts "rapping". "Since we left home"dadada"we are weak to a power like this", He's trying to be the one in charge in this scenario, to make the decisions, to hope Ody will just agree and go away from the island, but when he says "we have to go save them", and Eury says "no we don't", he goes back to singing. He's no longer "in charge" of the decision and has to appeal to Ody to rethink, by saying "lets just cut our losses". He returns to rapping on "I can hear her still" and "But you don't have to play", when he's trying to be more forceful with Ody, trying to get him to back down and agree with force instead. I can't recall any lines in Underworld, so... To the thunder saga! In Scylla, they start with talking. Not singing, not rapping, and Eury is just checking on Ody. Then he sings "I have a secret I can no longer keep", trying to be soft with the confession, appealing to Ody to be merciful with his decision, because he knows he did wrong by going against Ody's orders and he could be rightfully punished. In Mutiny, he's accusing Ody. It starts as talking, they're equals, but he shifts to singing when he begs Ody to justify his actions. He's ASKING Ody to be the captain and not the monster, and to reassure him. Once he knows that's not an option, he starts rapping "No can do- you miss your wife so bad you'd trade the lives of your own crew". He's on the offense, and trying to be the one in charge and make decisions. He's trying to BE the captain for the sake of the crew. He's trying to overpower Ody. When Ody wakes up, he's singing again. He feels weak and is probably asking Ody his opinion about the cows, even if he doesn't intend to follow those orders. Because as he's stated, "I'm tired, my friend". Then we get a fun part- Ody is singing an appeal to Eury with "please don't do this" and "reconsider", while Eury is following a more rhythmic, monotone-ish beat, he's not listening to Ody and is going to make the decision. In Thunder bringer, if I recall, his only lines are "Captain?" And "But we'll die". Both are spoken, because Eury has no power, he's heartbroken, and is still trying to appeal to Ody, but knows he has no say for the decision. Umm... Tldr: Eury raps when he's trying to be captain I guess- In my opinion. And also this is all from memory, I'm too sleepy to go over all the songs right now-

I Adore both Eurylocus and Polites as charactised in Epic and I would LOVE to see more of either or both characters. I did notice the guitar felt Wrong for Eurylocus in Mutiny, but this laid out exactly Why is felt so off. I also love his style of singing and how his 'intriment' really does tie into the one thing he knows about himself: He has to protect the crew, and he is Odysseus's second in command. I LOVE that about him. He and Odysseus's exchange in Luck Runs Out is actually Almost enough to make it my favourite part of the Ocean Saga with Ruthlessness inly just pulling ahead of it.

i absolutely love these videos and hearing about all the choices behind different characters and how to make them work in a song, cause like, if you told me "well actually every major character gets their own instrument, and you only hear it during their hype moments" i'd think "these are going to be really busy and distracting songs" but no, they work so well together it's insane. Everyone involved in this project deserves so much praise because holy hell the amount of effort put in on things most people won't even notice. like Athena starting with a high tone mind, then embracing Ody's run, before going back to high tone when rejecting him. or these unique instruments

Eurylochus is one my favorite characters in EPIC! Thank you for breaking down the music he's represented with. Also, the fact that he feels lost but takes comfort with his crew really explains his motivations further in the story, especially in Mutiny. I like to think he's like a mother to Odysseus' crew. Also, I would love to see an origin story for Eurylochus and see why he's become the way he is, how he met Odysseus and Polites, how he courted his wife, etc. That would be such a cool saga! 😊❤

I adore how you tie the motifs and use it to weave the story. The first thing thst struck me about Eurylochus was how his voice was dictated and melded with the crews voices to affirm his awkward position as second in command. Your attention to detail is beautiful ❤️

AN EPIC ORIGINAL ORIGIN STORY?! AM I DREAMING??! My jaw dropped--I CANNOT express how happy this would make me. Eurylochus has been my favorite character for the entire story. I tend to love the 'normal person' types (like Jean Keirstein from "Attack on Titan"); he's not a gifted tactician like Odysseus, a beloved optimist like Polites, or a revered hero like Achilles. He's just a man, trying to keep his his men from killing his Captain, best friend, and brother in law (curious to see whether that last bit would be canon in an Epic origin story) and his men from killing his Captain, only to snap and ruin that hard-fought cooperation because he finally HAS found a purpose worth fighting for--his men. And the moment he voices the doubts and suffering that have plagued them all for so long--the moment he reasserts his humanity--he dooms them all. Eurylochus is so tragic but so human, and I love him for it.

Sidenote: I would love it if you just kept adapting myths for this one big "Epic" universe. So many stories to play with, and so many Gods to introduce. Could be a lot of fun-

It’s such a marvel to me how much easter eggs there are in these songs! It’s so cool that Eurylochus kinda steals Ody’s instrument for a moment there. It’s very interesting how he’s not really grounded, he doesn’t exactly have his own instrument; so we definitely need his origin story😈
