I noticed that we don't get the bassy danger instrument until Odysseus tells the first lie. "You know I'm afraid of the water". His gaslighting the siren kicks off the danger motif, because the sirens aren't the threat in Suffering. Ody is.

I always found it interesting how Odysseus continues to toy with the siren at the end of Suffering after he’s already gotten the information he needs. I’ve seen some interpretations of him just sadistically messing with her or even ones where his line of inviting her onto the ship is him luring her into his attack range, but I always thought of it as him just indulging in this chance to talk to his wife for a little longer, even if he knows it’s not really her. Poor lad.

@yourboyneedsahobby5 ай бұрын
The best part is hidden Boss Battle cues within the song! The “penelope” lyric in the beginning of Suffering is being repeated over and over, mirroring the “poseidon” chanting at the beginning of Ruthlessness (and shows up again in Mutiny with both Ody & Eurylochus’ names being chanted because we’re divided between which one of them is the villan in this situation). Since the tone of the music is lighter it eases you into a calmer state and makes you LOWER YOUR GUARD AGAIN DANGER just like the sirens themselves!!!

Something that broke my heart ever since my first listening of Thunder Bringer was, that when Odysseus chose to trade the lives of his men, he turned to hear Penelope singing the Suffering chorus back at him. The thing that convinces him is just an illusion, a botched memory fabricated by the siren and not his real wife. After twelve years (or so), who's to say he's not fighting for someone that doesn't exist anymore? Penelope has never sung this to Odysseus (or we, as an audience, have no way of knowing) so the only thing that Odysseus latched onto to make this decision was hope. She might had moved on and made this tragedy even worse. But alas, this is one of the few Greek stories that portrays a happy faithful couple and I'm eager to hear the rest. This musical has me so invested

YES!!! It's his most recent memory of her, and even as he knows it wasn’t real, his heart can't help but cling to it.

This musical as a whole is a masterpiece of subtleties. I had to re-hear the Thunder saga a few times before it struck me that the reason Eurylochus is so distraught and feeling betrayed because Odysseus was the only one who actually knew they were going through Scylla's Lair (in Epic context ofc). The context in Different Beast states that their hearing is impaired on purpose to avoid the sirens call/singing with the beeswax, and its said that they realized before approaching the sirens, so if no one is able to hear anything, the snatch plan was made beforehand and the singing is only to contextualize to us, listeners. So, if they cant hear a thing and the only one focused on the siren who actually blurted out the info about Scylla was Odysseus, then he literally was the only one that knew of the whole thing, and that actually makes Munity have a whole other level of "how are we supposed to trust you now?" Simply mindblowing ngl

Not sure if it’s intended, but I really like the neat comparison between Suffering and Get in the Water. Both times Odysseus is faced with “choices” to dive in and surrender to the waves, yet both times he chooses to fight and overcomes them. And both times it’s extremely hard too; he turns down the Siren despite her looking like his wife, and the second time he has to face the wrath of Poseidon alone 🌊

Cool stuff ive noticed in the songs (this is a lot lol i love this musical) Suffering: "Penelope ive told you this before, you know im afraid of the water" Which is especially interesting that hes still checking to make sure it really isnt penelope before him even knowing nearly certainly that theres a siren before him. Scylla: Eury says he opened the wind bag while Ody was asleep (they're going into a possible death trap i really think that was a horrible move)and that was a huge shock to me because Eury had always been a voice of reason, suggesting they're as careful as possible and that they "cut their losses and just run". Scylla also implies that Eury is going to confess in "deep down, you hide a reason for shame". Ody also spent so much time believing he was at fault for falling asleep (this man stayed up OVER A WEEK) to make sure no one opened it. Eury really just didn't respect him atp. But right after he confesses Scylla sings "Leaving them feeling betrayed, breaking the bonds you have made, there is no price we won't pay" like it was Odys breaking point, he'd do anything for Eury and Eury just betrayed him like that. All he wants is to be home with his son and wife and Eury stopped that and caused so many of the men with them to die. But then "deep down we only care for ourselves" right before Ody gives Eury an order? Not that hes planning something but that he may just not care anymore. In stories that ive found Scylla has 6 heads, so 6 torches, 6 men die. Right after that Scylla sings "Deep down we're lonely demons from hell" which I believe is not only her comparing herself to Ody the whole song but also explaining how he's losing his humanity and how he's losing his close friends, people, maybe even family. Mutiny: the parallels between luck runs out and the crew singing about how his luck has run out and they cant trust him anymore Thunder Bringer: The melody after the creew (presumably) dies turns really soft and gentle, much like how it shifts when he talks about someone he cares for, especially penelope, seems like he truly cares/cared for his men and crew but his wife is always number 1 (which in "just a man" he sings "Deep down i would trade the world to see my son and wife" the world doesnt have to be literal, his crew, his people, his sanity, faith, anything or all of them just to see them both, he'd give it all up, and its what hes doing)

2:25 I’m glad that my theory about that was finally confirmed. Another I’ve noticed and have seen someone point out before is that when Sirenelope talks about Scylla, CIRCE’S motif is playing in the background because it was Circe who made Scylla a monster

I like the way you sing Ody's lyrics. They sound so gentle and soft as if he's playing with her. He knows it's not real, but the emotion is still there. The way "more than you know" kinda sounds like, "yes, I miss her. More than you know you faker". The siren Penelope is so perfect. She sings everything like she has no thoughts in her head. She sounds innocent to an obnoxious degree. And the secret to pass through the ocean is sung beautifully. Like she doesn't know the weight of what she's telling him. As if she is having fun talking about it because she thinks he doesn't realize anything. She nails the innocent mermaid talk, it makes me like her. Honestly, I would trust her even if I had beeswax in my ears.

It gives me the vibe that the ensamble is saying "you will do a horrible thing and become a monster" and Penelope is like "nonono, don't listen to that, just do what you need to do to get back"

Ody: "Throw their bodies back in the water. Let them drown." The crew: "WHUT?!"

Ody: But cut off their tails first so they can't swim, then drop them back in the water. Crew: OOOHH!😮

@@Oridamaybe he used hand gestures to signal what he wanted his men to do, but still shouted the order to terrorize the sirens?

@@hopefulstarfish7559 Actually, now that I think about it... that would actually make sense. I can immediately see it play in my head. Odysseus doing both hand gestures for the crew to read while they're still wearing beeswax in their ears, and shouting orders for the sirens to listen about the terrible fate that'll happen to them.

I thought it was pretty cool how the background vocals sing Penelope's motif but in slightly different notes. That first gave me a sense that something was off haha

it’s so fun to think about the idea that the siren powers were working, partially. if i ever make a suffering animatic ill have to take note of that lol

After Odysseus says “No” in “Suffering” there is a piano motif that plays while the siren is talking. The piano motif reminded me of a similar piano motif from “Undertale” called “Battle Against a True Hero”

@jayherrans, I have a question based on some logical presumptions the siren is not getting things wrong so much as off. EX; she messed up the instrument, its not Penelope's but Polities, or saying daughter instead of son etc. she isn't explicitly wrong, just off by a little bit. Thus, she is pulling some information from Odysseus, she has to be. So when he baits her by saying "you know I'm afraid of the water" when he isn't, he logically cannot be outright lying to her if she accepts it so easily. it has to be close, off yes, but not explicitly wrong This is backed by the patterns of Odysseus himself. he rarely outright lies. but he manages to trick various gods/monsters/etc by simply telling an adjacent truth. the horse was technically a gift, just also a trap, etc. the best example of this is Circe, he tells her he's simply looking for his men (and he is, he just also knows what happened) and successfully lies, but when he says that he got the flower with his own two hands, is instantly called out. conclusion: he somehow is scared of the water, or at least something(one) close to it The question is thus. is he thinking of Poseidon when he says "water"/she is pulling the information of that fear? or something else?
