I barely know how to describe this one it's kind of just us talking about characters archetypes like tsunderes in Persona, and the weird lack of effect dating has on group dynamics. The characters in this thumbnail are all either talked or joked about in some way.

Persona 3 Valentines Day scene? I can't really imagine it being much different from Christmas. If you reject every single girl on Christmas and then go back to the dorm, you can talk to each girl and they'll each have a line of dialogue of something like, "Oh... you're not doing anything tonight?" And they sound really sad because you literally chose to do nothing over spending time with them on Christmas.

I think the “no cheating amongst party members” thing can work, it just needs some additional context. In what I’m picturing, say you decide to romance Ann, then at the evening of that day there should be a message in the phantom thieves group chats were she gives the news to the rest , and they congratulate the two of you. I feel like this would be very nice and satisfying for those who takes the romances more seriously. After that point, the entire team knows that the two of you are dating, so it wouldn’t make sense to be able to date say makoto, as she knows you’re already in a relationship. You can still cheat on her with say Hifumi if you’re interested in that, as the two don’t know each other, but that shouldn’t get in the way of adding more romance specific interactions. Only problem is that I feel the Haru confidant would be very different if you were already in a relationship, and there’s no easy way to implement that (what if you start dating someone else a few ranks in?)

I never understood how the subject of dating joker wasn't ever brought up among the team, even if it was offscreen. Like, Makoto seems to get along well with both Ann and Haru in the few scenes they share together, so I doubt that they wouldn't at least bring up that they were dating Joker when chatting. Especially in the case of Makoto - she would definitely want to ask Ann or Haru about dating tips since she isn't as experienced.

I'd be happy with just a few extra bits of dialogue that has teammates acknowledge that you're dating someone, or different dialogue in certain story moments, similar to a Bioware-style romance. That'd kind of kill the option of a harem route but tbh I wouldnt be sad to see it go as the scenes never really added much for me. Someone else here mentioned it but a great example in P5 is a scene in which Joker is asked about marriage and if you're dating a girl who happens to be in the room at that moment she has a short line of unique dialogue. Little stuff like that.

There actually is one part in Persona 5 where something happens if you’re dating a party member during a mandatory group event. I could be remembering this wrong but I think everyone is studying and Ryuji asks if you want to get married someday and if you say yes, whoever you’re dating blushes and acknowledges it.

That's what I want too. I think I can ignore the realism of what would happen if you date all the girls in your close interpersonal group IF they can just personalize cutscenes going forward after you commit to a relationship. Even if its just a line of dialogue stating that your romantic interest is pouting or seems kind of sad Or if you choose dialogue involving a girl you're intimate with they don't freak the hell out and act all surprised like you're not dating. Maybe they throw you flirtly line or say something like "hey later" or even just a wryly smile so they don't give it away that you're involved.

I was watching Persona 5 Royal Mementos Conversations and I really like Ryuji and Kasumi talking about being athletes because they both follow the Sports Club Character Archetype in the Persona series (other examples are Akihiko, Kazushi, Mamoru and Rio from Persona 3 and Kou and Daisuke from Persona 4) and throughout the games that character trope is usually left as a Social Link but this time they’re both party members, which within itself is interesting as the party members in the Persona games don’t really have any common interests with each other. Usually seeing two characters who fall into specific tropes and actually interacting based on their shared interests is something I usually look out for in the spin-off games like Persona Q1 and Q2; an example of this being Rise and Yukari interacting Persona 4 Arena Ultimax talking about fashion, modelling, appearing on TV and so on.

I think so too. At least 2 optional dating events that are personalized to those characters. I know people talk about the one true waifu but that would give you the incentive to see all of these really cool dating scenes unique to THAT girl. I'm cool with a pallete cleanser day you can throw the S-Link map away for one day just to enjoy that scene. Most of this stuff - if you're optimizing play - you don't get to enjoy until you're done ranking up everyone. So it's annoying you can't get any of those scenes because you're too busy trying to earn more rank ups with other characters. Replaying P4G made me feel this way too. Can't compliment on Chie's yukata cause I gotta get those points for Rise for the rank up. Stuff like that.

Going at your pace, getting immersed in the world, making the choices you want, living as the protagonist, it makes your game feel unique and more personal than by just following a guide or trying to max everything out.

Weird, I felt Marie was more blunt than bitchy compared to other tsun characters. Severa from fe:a played into that tsun archetype and often put down most of the 2nd gen deliberately because of her inferiority complex. Yet in Marie's case she thinks Chie looks good in green but she just wonders why both Chie and Yukiko stick to one colour of clothing. And when Chie looks hurt and asks if she was bothering Marie the whole time, Marie says that's not the case and she wonder's why Chie said 'friends' and which leads to Marie asking what does it mean to become friends. I dunno, I came into the persona series later than most yet I ended up liking Marie despite her reputation with the fandom.

I have an idea to incorporate a yandere into the game though it might be sh*t. The Yandere could be a villain for the next game. Her obsession with the protagonist would be a motivator for there crimes. She would see the protagonist as this perfect being that stands above all and would try to make a "perfect world" for him. She would try and kill anyone that did him wrong and see your teammates as people who worship you as a god. At first, she would just be a background character giving subtle glances to you as she walks past, but as the game progresses she would stand out to you more and more until her social link starts (whether the social link would progress as the story progresses or on your own terms is up to your imagination and I wouldn't make her a romanceable option). Starting off the social link she would act like an innocent airhead, but as the social link moves forward you would start to notice her odd behavior. That behavior would be even more prevalent when she joins your team. As you piece together that she was the root of all of this. We now go to her dungeon. Her dungeon would be some museum dedicated to you and all your exploits. This Museum would depict our exploits in the story, minor events like you entering your house signifying that she knows where you live, and even portraits of social you maxed out. The Yandere's thoughts would echo from the portraits badmouthing each one except her own( if you friendzone anyone she will be thankful that you were not "influenced" by the other girls). Her social link wouldn't be symbolized by a portrait but a shrine and when you get it she would gush about how you are so perfect and that you belong to her. Your teammates that you maxed out would like upon their respective portraits and reminisce about their friendship and your romance option would have a cute moment with you. If you went down the harem route this would be the point where your team finds out and all of your allies that you romanced would be furious with you if you didn't date any of your teammates (which I don't why that would the case) they would only be disappointed in you. Other than that it would be a normal palace. For the boss fight, you won't be fighting her but instead, you would be fighting another version of you but with white, shining armor. This boss would be impossible in the first half because it would be immune to all your attacks and conditions. This is because of the way she sees you so the only way to beat it is to show her that you're are not invincible or perfect. Once that's done then the other you would be weak to everything. when he's defeated then the crew would talk some sense into her and show her the reality of the situation. When the dungeon is done she will turn herself in and the rest is history. TL;DR: A yandere is the main villain of the game and would try to kill any one who did you wrong and her level would be dedicated to the choices you made on your journey.

Personally what I would do is two things 1: Make it so that you can only date one of the party girls per playthrough 2: During sense where the group is together, *when possible* move the main character and there S/O next to each other and have either the main characters arm around the S/O, or have them hold hands, and just have the sense play out identically otherwise

koopatroopa125 I like the idea of holding hands when possible during the story scenes, as long as you don’t go overboard (i.e. it shouldn’t be every scene where it is possible). It can work well in the more relaxed events, but I feel like it would be kinda inappropriate for more story related scenes. Plus like, it’s a kinda weird thing to do when you’re also hanging out with 5 other friends. For most scenes I feel like it’s better to stop at the two characters being next to each, and reserve the handholding to more celebratory scenes, e.g. for p5 the beach scene, scenes in hawaii, the buffet, and the sushi har. Unfortunately while the idea is really cool I don’t think this is possible to implement without a ton of effort, especially since the characters sometimes interact and you need to make sure the compositing looks good for every case...

@@tcoren1 Admittedly "when possible" may not have been the best choice of words. I wanted to convey when possible without destroying some aspects of the scene. It would be hard for someone like Maokoto as she is often in the front giving presentations to the group, but for someone like Haru/Ann, holding hands while at LeBlanc while discussing plans is not that unreasonable. They're in stressful situations, and simply holding hands can act as a stress releif, so I don't see that being a problem.

It just feels like they could do more with your chosen GF (or BF if any future titles allow it). Maybe walking to school together if your dating a character from the school the protag goes to (could easily be explained by them meeting up at the train stop for the last leg of the walk) or maybe (for example this could work for a character like Tae who lives close to where the MC lives) the character waking up the protag in the morning. Also maybe the best friend character could bring up relationships more throughout the game, and so long as you answer the questions the right way he'll catch on to who you like and some flags will trigger for them to bring it up more.

Honestly the Yandere archetype might be a good reoccurring miniboss character, like she is a minion character who is maybe an optional social link and she is just into the main character from the beginning. Your social link level can determine the difficulty of her boss fights and if you manage to get her social link to 10 before a certain point in the story you have the option to just recruit her (under the condition that you aren't dating other girls) with her arc basically being that you soften her crazy side and eventually when she potentially is your girlfriend she has her character development done. Naturally if you rank 10 her while dating another girl she just stops being evil and gets over her obsession with the protagonist, and just is your friend (maybe even finding someone else she likes since her psychosis still goes away in bond 10 thanks to character development) and if you don't rank 10 her at all she gets in the way of an attack meant for you and dies in your arms. Ya know like how Shinjirou can potentially live in Persona 3? (Except done more impactfully) As for the tsundere archetype, honestly take a note from how Persona doesn't let you date people of the same gender and then have persona 6 give you a female MC (no male MC if this is to work) and pull a Junpei where the best friend character has a crush on a guy who you can't social link with but is a tsundere about it. People would still complain about not being able to date the tsundere party member but you have an excuse that "of course you can't date her, both of you are girls and neither are lesbians so no dating" Honestly I can think of a bunch of ways to put in archetypes into Persona, but that is because I'm on the outside looking in on the development for the games. Honestly one thing I'd also kinda like that'd be fun (but not feasable) is a Persona game where you are one guy and all of your party members are female, which could make the incorporation of romance bits and tropes into story easier, and even give you the option to just get a harem ending with all of the girls. Naturally having the status quo be maintained with you dating one or more of the girls can be done with optional dialogue and the like. Edit: thought of a way to include a dateable tsundere party member, like the Yandere make her an optional party member that you can miss out on if you don't do her social link in time. Heck for extra spiciness make the Tsundere a miniboss like the Yandere and have the two have same arcana and no matter which one you pick you can't have both. (Naturally like the Yandere if you don't social link the Tsundere she would die, potentially being betrayed by the big bad whom she overly trusts) or heck make a secret branching path where through a combination of crazy stuff you can potentially only get away with a threesome with the now sane Yandere and the Deredere Tsundere and the two are still party members you can put in your party. I was literally playing P5 Royal last night, and I'm dating Ann. I'm at the Hawaii trip, and the entire romantic relationship dynamic breaks down in multiple scenarios. First, Ryuji is still up Ann's a** and I can't say anything. He's still clearly objectifying her in front of me but MC doesn't say anything. Then you go to the night when Ryuji and Ann spend the night in your room and they ask you what your type is. A perfect opportunity to to say we're dating. None of the options that even imply it are given. I think the thing that came closest to acknowledgement was when Ryuji asked what I did on my last day of the trip, and I say I was with "someone" (Ann). But, Ryuji who's usually nosey, doesn't want to know with who and Ann doesn't say anything. Its not a super big deal that the game needs to acknowledge my dating choice, but it does kind of break the immersive experience when the game teeters around the subject in situations where it would/could be brought up organically. And it wouldn't even need to be one of the VO scenes. The group Texts scenes would work too. It just kind of feels like the game is "forcing" you to have this secret romance since it looks like no one knows and its never implied that you or your significant other tell anyone.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who dislikes how quiet characters keep their relationships in P games. I don't expect them to scream from high heaven about their relationship, but why not just let everyone know they're an item? They choose to keep it secret, but it seems kinda pointless if you ask me; if i were dating a classmate of mine in high school, i wouldn't hide it, i'd be like "yep, we're dating. It's no big deal whatsoever". Doesn't that kinda go against one of the themes of Persona: Accept yourself and work to make yourself the best you you can be? They way they portray it in Persona games, it almost seems like the characters are embarrassed to let others know they're dating the MC, and that seems kinda against the book if you catch my Tokyo Drift. Also, If i'm not mistaken, in Golden, they're more open about it during certain parts of the game; personally, i dated Chie and she gets flustered when talking during the Fireworks festival and on valentine's day, your friends practically leave the two of you be to allow you both to enjoy the day together.

Ok, Disclaimer I haven't played golden only the original P4 but you bring up some good points. The way I imagine how the characters could acknowledge that they are dating is that some time after you've completed the social link/confidant you'll have a scene that is added. For example if I had been on the development team for P5 I would have suggested that one scene is added for the news to break for the other party members maybe, and then at certain points in the story like maybe before you send the calling card for Shido you have a conversation with your GF as if this is make or break moment. Make the relationship and the situation at hand seem larger not just by who they are going up against but also a personal struggle that they as a couple have to deal with. Your thoughts Kifflom?

I was thinking, would it work if a future persona game had structured itself where your social links can only progress until a certain point and then wait for a significant moment in the main story that then impact the narratives in the side stories? After that moment in the narrative you are then able to romance them eventually. The issue I can think of is trying to make every social link relevant to the main story so it would make sense that this major story event affects them.

P3p and p5r already do this but I honestly found it kind of obnoxious from a gameplay perspective because it can be really unclear when the social link opens back up and how much time you have to do it or when it will be locked behind story again. Maxing charm to hang out with akihiko just to be met with two separate roadblocks in p3p has always felt obnoxious to me

I think it would be interesting to see a Persona game where relationships can change the outcomes of your game in multiple ways. It would be difficult, but I couldn’t imagine the amount of fun it’d be to finish a social link and realise that your game was different from someone else because of it. Like with Ryuji for example, we could’ve finished his confidant early and then later in the game, because his more level headed, a situation like (Spoilers for P5!!!!!! You’ve been warned) Morgana leaving or Okumura’s death wouldn’t happen. Or maybe we wouldn’t meet Haru and we’d meet someone else. It would be hard to flesh out these separate situations so I’d understand if it never came to fruition but I definitely think there should be some acknowledgment of social links in the main story or in a place like mementos where separate conversations happen at least.

If they added a yandere character i feel like she could be a perfect excuse for an extra dungeon if she isn't a main antagonist: the way i see it is in the first few ranks, you learn about her other traits, keeping her obscessivness mostly invisible save maybe a few hints so romancing her doesn't feel weird. Then comes the romance/friend decision: if you choose to romance her SL continue as normal but at some point maybe a random girl hit on you or there s a scene with a party member which triggers her jealousy. At this point it depends on how dangerous you want her to be and if the game allows you to interact with reality with persona, and more importantly of the lesson the social link wants to teach. If it s "obssesion is dangerous and you have to know when to end it" then i imagine either the authority or you would have to stop her in one way or another, and she would recognize where she went wrong, choosing to keep herself away from you for everyone s good. If it s a "Obsession is not right, but everyone can learn from their mistake" thenyou still would have to talk her to reason but maybe end it on a less bittersweet tone, if she makes significant amend If you go friendship route then she snaps sooner but in a different way and i can see either the link break and her being replaced by someone or something else, or you keep the same aesops of the lovers route, maybe getting more details about the reasons behind her actions Now of course this would turn persona shortly into an horror movie and is a load of work, but it s interesting to think about

The cheating/harem route always seemed like the joke route to me anyway so I'd rather have a committed romance that adds something to the main story. But idk, in general I hope they experiment more with P6 both story-wise and with the cast. Hear me out. A yandere character can work in Persona if its only revealed at the end of their social link when you romance them and they fully open up to you that they were a secret yandere the entire time. Like it has to be a punishment/reward depending on how you look at it for going all the way to that point and ignoring all the subtle signs of that being the case with them. It can't work at any other point than the end of the romantic social link and all they'd have to do is keep her subtle about it and only slightly more overt in rare circumstances throughout the story depending on whether or not you chose to pursue her romantically and when you do it. Maybe even just on Christmas and Valentines day. But like the situation has to be a, "You flew right into my web and now its about time I feast!" type situation. Just as a spider doesn't chase a fly that avoids them she would have to not go full yandere unless she knows she's caught you and has you right where she wants you. Curiosity killed the Morgana if you know what I mean.

And its an easy fix for cheating on her too. Just make the gag cheating scene imply she castrated the protagonist and gave herself an injection so no one else could have him. The protagonist could live through that and continue the game like normal and it would still be a good hilarious/fucked up valentines day scene as you'd expect. Could even have a, "Protag kun is in fact the father 9 months later, but thats a story for another time." card pop up on screen afterwards followed by a scene of him just being at home holding his crotch in pain. Valentines day more like Vasectomy day filthy, unfaithful senpai. XD

Either way, romance in Persona is bad and half-assed, mostly because the Harem route ruins the opportunity for small scenes with X number of variables involving the main party. It's kind of a butterfly effect of variables that spirals quickly out of control because the devs are hung up on letting the player date everyone at the same time.

In terms of different content of the main story, in P5 there is a story scene (I think it’s after Shido right before you take exams) everyone comes over and sojiro mentions marriage and then Ryuji asked you if you want to get married and if you’re dating any of the party members each of them have a specific response to what you say. But of course they basically mutter it to themselves so no one else hears it so they don’t figure out you’re cheating on them

The series has been trying to find ways to either punish or guilt you more and more as the series goes on if you’re cheating (p4g’s individual confrontations, you actively miss out on good sp items in p5r if you do it, etc) and considering persona is one of the only dating sim adjacent series that even allows long term cheating I don’t think it’d be weird to see it removed for the sake of story cohesion. However if p6 leans into full anime tropes then the idea of cheating isn’t going anywhere since it allows for harem fantasies
