Rambo was only turning around to go back to town to get something to eat because he sure in the hell wasn't going to walk 30 miles down the road to the next diner, like Teasle said.

Hell no, that's the better part of a day's walk. This whole movie could've probably been avoided if he just bought Rambo a hamburger or something THEN dropped him off. Rambo walks away satisfied, Teasle continues his God complex over the town.

The book told a different story, even though most of the important plot details were consistent. It was shades of grey as to who the hero was and who the villain was. I was born in the late 1970's, so obviously I didn't get to experience the 1960's firsthand. More than any history text or documentary, this novel made me understand the generational culture shift that occurred in that decade. Specifically, I better understood the changes in attitude and breaking from "traditional values" and the frustration of those resisting that change. The breaking away from stifling conformity and those who tried to stand in the way of it. I like that the book wasn't so black-and-white but really made the reader question their beliefs and values. I hope you drew the same experience, but you know what they say: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I will always love that nostalgic 1982 time portal that is First Blood but I still think they should make a movie based directly on the book. The end would ensure Stallone's movie's are never replaced. It should take place in 1972 instead of 82.

No because Teasel stands 10ft away from his table while Rambo is eating, making sure he doesn't try anything, next he searches him after he's done, making sure he didn't steal the butter knife, and then tells him in the car that there's a place 30 miles down the highway where he can haircut and shower because he looks kinda stinky. Then Rambo says: "You still keep pushing me, I didn't do anything to you yet" After letting him off at the bridge, we're back to where we were.

Teasle’ s back story in the First Blood novel was that he was in the Army during Korean War and your right he feels anger towards Rambo due to the fact he is a Vietnam War Vet but doesn’t like how Rambo looks in appearance with long hair, dirty and unkept. In the movie really only reference give on Teasle and him being a vet is he clean cut, old school police officer and towards the end of the movie in his office they show medals on his desk he had received. Sheriff Teasle must've violated Rambo's civil rights by arresting him without probable cause and escorting him out of the town after he had only just entered it a few minutes earlier. A charge of vagrancy would not stick since in the 1960's vagrancy laws were deemed too broad and vague, and violated the due process laws of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. Unless Teasle could provide proof that Rambo had been sleeping, camping out, or begging in public places, a charge of vagrancy would not hold up in a court of law. Rambo had just entered the town and was merely walking along the highway, so he was technically not committing any crime or misdemeanor.

+44excalibur He'd be fucked in real life. Some unworldly sheriff of a dead-end town in the anus of nowhere who has the gall to threaten a returning soldier with PTSD for simply wandering. Rampage Clover Yep. I imagined that if Rambo: First Blood Part II had followed James Cameron's original script, it probably would've began with a brief prologue where Rambo is on trial and both Sheriff Teasle and his entire department get their asses chewed out by Rambo's defense attorney for multiple civil rights violations and counts of police brutality, which probably ends Teasle's career in law enforcement while Rambo is sentenced to a military psychiatric prison.

Rampage Clover Well, the book was very different. Rambo killed a lot of people in the book, whereas in the movie he didn't kill anyone, so the tone and context are totally different. What I love about this scene is firstly the defiance of Stallone. Cheers for dumping me in the middle of no where, I’ll just go where I please Teasle immediately gets triggered looking in the mirror with that how dare you defy me look, he was clearly looking for the fight It’s the subtle fist clench by Stallone showing his anger is now surfacing and he’s probably ready to hit him at this point but he’s just biting his lip and just closing down now This scene up until the finger printing shows Stallone acting in a way of stubbornness and defiance to make anything the cops do as challenging as possible The film is progressively picking up in tension and moods changing Stallone getting peeved as he’s being ridiculed The cops all pack hunt to bully him and humiliate him Things are slowly simmering away inside for Stallone PTSD triggers starting to rise

Met a few cops like this. Got pulled over few years ago because the cop didn't like the shade of tint on my windows. Also where my tags were placed on the license plate. Also asked me where I was going. Whole time he was interrogating me I was thinking of this scene and Rambo. This is all very common sadly. It's interesting how this series came full circle. It started as a gritty story about a vet with PTS, then he turns into an iconic comic-book style action hero in 2 and 3, then in the 4 and 5 he's back to being a haunted Vet who knows how to kick ass.

Of course, there's the usual narrative about Vietnam vets in the film. However, the film also shows something else, conflict between different generations, and in this case, more specifically, between vets of different generations. Rambo, obviously a Vietnam vet. The sheriff, a Korean War vet who fought at "Frozen Chosin" (unlike the novel, it's not so much implied, although the sheriff has a shadow box on a wall). The sheriff and his old-fashioned and straight-laced background. The Vietnam vet with what some would say an "unkept" or rough appearance. There's no telling why the sheriff is this way towards Rambo. It could be due to jealousy over the fact that the sheriff's war was considered to be a forgotten war, while Rambo's was highly publicized. Or it could be a cultural difference, again with the sheriff being old-fashioned, and maybe seeing Rambo as a "beatnik", a vagrant, counter-cultural and/or simply a threat to the old ways.

They don't make them like this anymore. Captures the tenure of the times. Men sent off to fight and them returning to be vilified by sections of their community. Suffering PSTD from the war, angry and confused. Of course Sherif Teasle (Brian Dennehy) played the perfect standover cop. Well things rapidly spin out of control as Rambo gives them a war they won't believe. Loved this movie and still think it one of his best. Another favourite of the times is "Falling Down".

I'm not an expert in American laws, but I often watch podcasts about societal problems in America, and sheriffs are part of it. In many small towns even nowadays, they still have a tremendous influence on political matters, as well as on the life of the communities. And some of them did some very bad shit (can't remember the names but was pretty recent) like they were either involved in bribery or some arbitrary shooting, miscellaneous abuse/extortion and so on. I think that's also one of the many issues the films tries to address, with the sheriff here acting overzealous, driven by prejudices about vets, he says something like "We don't want people like you/you wouldn't like it here, it's too quiet, even boring but that's the way we like it" showing a sort of communitarian cocooning (ironically of course since Rambo is a vet and fought to "serve god and country" therefore "common interests"). Normally you would expect that this kind of heroism and service to your country would be valued by the community or at least be acknowledged with some gratitude but it shows also the fragmentation of each city/state when it comes to rules, chauvinism and that's I guess also a criticism the film tries to make, a divided country especially after the war, the failure of the governments to generate a national patriotic impetus. Also the sheriff is a vet himself from the Korean war, and you would expect him to share some bond of comradeship due to a mutual respect from a vet to another both having suffered hardship/horrors but instead he acts like a heartless cold bastard, maybe a commentary on generational issues but also who's got the biggest (Korean war, as Stallone says on a voice over commentary that it was a "small war" (1950-1953) compared to the Vietnam war (1955-1975)).

The sheriff didn’t know he was a vet yet. Just thought he was a dirty tramp with no visible means of support. He misunderstood him and didn’t ask enough questions until it was too late...and even then he wouldn’t admit he was wrong and that kept escalating more as the movie went on. He wouldn’t ask the helicopter pilot why shooting was going on, he wouldn’t listen to the good deputies, he wouldn’t listen to the state trooper captain, he wouldn’t listen to Trautman.

That's how a lot of people treat them, they see them as an intimidating threat, scary, an eyesore and people to simply watch out for in times of peace when they are seen in town going about their own business, but in times of war, they depend on those 'intimidating, eyesore, scary threatening appearing' people very heavily, it's not just a few people, it's the majority of society in general. They only respect them in times of war but shun them every other time.
