I like how all the main characters get a chance to destroy the Horcruxes. Think about it -The Diary was destroyed by Harry -The ring by Dumbledore. While they weren’t really friends, Dumbledore was probably the wizard Harry admired the most besides Sirius and Remus -Ron, his best friend, destroyed the locket -Hermione, his second best friend, destroyed the cup -the diadem’s destruction is the only one that’s different. Book, destroyed by Crabbe; films, Harry and Ron together -Voldemort himself destroys the piece of himself he left in Harry. Harry may not have been able to do this sacrifice without his parents’ and the Marauders -Finally, Neville destroys the snake. +The Villain Fanboy Well correct me if I'm wrong but atleast in the books (as far as i remember) it wasn't really stated that you have to kill a person although it is implied. But it certainly doesn't say that someone has to die for each horcrux. In order to create a horcrux you have to split your soul in several parts (for seven horcruxes in seven parts). Usually it damges the person severly if it doesn't kill you. So I believe a person with a healthy and good soul is more likely to die than someone evil. Voldemort was just a really really evil person with a “crippled“ soul to begin with. In the books (and again i'm not 100% sure) a murder on innocent people damages the soul in a pretty hard way, so Voldemord who killed countless people was able to split his soul 7 times even if the last one wasn't intended or expected. But even for him it was nearly too much (and he, as you know, killed more than 7 people). So somehow with a already damaged soul you are more likely to successfully create a horcrux. So of course you probably need to kill people to prepare your soul for something like that, but hypothetically if someone had a fucked up soul like Voldemord since his day of birth he also may be able to create 7 horcruxes without killing someone.

I have seen them a long time ago, but in the last book I found out that in the past Dumbledore was a dark wizard along with Gellert Grindelwald ( they were close friends) until he or Grindelwald killed his sister in a 3 way duel. Aberforth Dumbledore (younger brother to Albus Dumbledore) explained how she died. It is unknown whose spell killed her. Dumbledore's sister was sick and Grindelwald wanted to bring her to the big world (presumably he wanted Ariana to be on his side, speculations tell she became an obscurial). Dumbledore's brother did not agree with Grindelwald and started fighting, Albus joined and this is how Ariana died. Dumbledore wanted to find out who killed her from the source. The ring of Gaunt ( horcrux) was made of a resurrection stone. This stone was invented by a wizard many centuries before Harry Potter was born, and it was inherited by Voldemort. He had no intention to revive people consequently he turned it into a weapon of death. Severus Snape told Albus he could live no more than one year.

You never "see" it get destroyed in the book either. However, Dumbledore did tell him about it's significance, and how it was destroyed. The ring was passed down through Tom Riddles ancestors. He "in the book" found his uncle and stole the ring, only after framing him of killing voldemorts muggle father and his family. Voldemort always hated his father because he hates the idea of blood mixing. He like his ancestors (the family of Salazar Slytherin) believed that only pure bloods(meaning you have magic parents) should be able to study magic. He then eventually made the ring a horcrux like he did with all of his "Trophy's". According to the book, Dumbledore managed to seize the ring and decided he would destroy it himself, which he did. Unfortunately through his efforts it cause that blackening hand he has throughout the 6th movie. It was a curse that was going to spread and eventually kill him. Which is one of the reasons he asked Snape to murder him.

Everything in the HP books gets new meaning when rereading them. That's what's so great about them. You can spot things throughout the series that you missed the first time and which later come back to be important. For example I think the vanishing cabinet Draco uses to let the Death Eaters into Hogwarts in book 6 pops up in at least three of the previous books. Harry hides in the one in Borgin and Burke's to hide from the Malfoys in CoS, Peeves breaks the one in Hogwarts I think later in the same book, and Fred and George shove the Slytherin Quidditch captain in the broken one in OotP, nearly killing him.

Honestly the horcruxes is probably my favorite aspect about Voldemort. Very ingenious and original for Rowling to create. I'm jealous of her creativity, they made the Voldemort battle amazing because it wasn't a case of learning a deadly spell to defeat him in a duel, but made it a whole journey of destroying his "pieces of eight," if you will, and he was only defeated because the Elder Wand refused to kill it's master. There was no sudden epiphany and Harry used it to best Voldemort. Only Dumbledore could've beaten him in a fair fight. I'd say Dumbledore was a touch better, but Voldemort has the Avada Kedavra as his signature spell. Not easy to fight someone who fires an instant kill every other second.

Nay2D2 technically anyone who destroyed a horcrux killed Voldemort. Dumbledore, Ron, Hermione, Neville and Voldemort himself killed a part of the dark Lord. I think in the books the books the diadem was destroyed by the fire curse so Goyle also destroyed one Horcrux. But the one who truly took Voldemort's last part of soul was Harry Potter and not Neville.

If I remember correctly from the book (and the film), it was trying to goad Ron into attacking Harry, hence why he cowered when Ron rushed in to destroy it. This was also right after Ron had returned after a major falling out between the trio.
