These young women bought a tear to my eye. All the stress that we are conditioned to live with regarding money due to our upbringing and how we shake it off to experience more joy and love. All the best to both of them and their lucky son.

I have a lot of sympathy for Kate. I was in a different field, but surrounded by similar ideas. I earned my PhD and was planning on becoming an academic, which came with a lot of financial sacrifices (but "moral superiority"). I finally made a similar decision, that I wanted a life and a family and a home, so I am still using my degree but in an industry setting. In my field you are criticized for this as selling out and it involved a hard grieving process for me. But my family and I are in such a better place and are having serious "rich life" conversations. We just realized in our year-end review that we actually are on track for retirement savings and my mind was absolutely blown, I always assumed we just wouldn't have enough.

In German, the word for debt is "Schuld", which also means "guilt", and "shame". It's built into the German psyche that debt is fundamentally a bad thing. If you can avoid debt by any means, you must. Growing up with Indian parents, and also currently living in Germany has drilled that kind of thinking into my head. I don't like to spend money on something unless I really love it, and if I can afford that thing at least 5 times over. And of course, debt is not an option for me. So this hit home.

I learned something very valuable from your conversations with Kate and Christine. To celebrate wins!🎉 my husband is due home in about a half an hour then we’re off together for an appointment. I can’t wait till we sit down and have a meal together because I’m going to tell him how much I appreciate all he’s done to contribute to our rich life. thank you Kate and Christine for your courage and vulnerability… You two are amazing! Thank you Ramit for all you do.💜

Holy moly I can relate to Kate so much. Exact same dynamic with my parents, super worried mom, abandoned a low-paying college career path, very confident in my parenting ability, stressed about money now instead of celebrating accomplishments, and basically everything else. This episode really helped me see the changes I want to make. Thanks so much for having this conversation!

One of my favorite episodes so far. I love how they admire and appreciate each other. As the mom of a talented musician, I hope that Kate can find a way to incorporate a music into her rich life. She's an event planner? Could she flip the script and play music at events instead? Event musicians can earn more than she makes planning them! And Christine's story is so inspiring. I hope they will grow to celebrate in special ways.

Academics can also believe that money is evil (except for the ones in the business school). Parents losing jobs can totally mess up your psyche about money. Not a musician, but I feel like it's also the case in the workforce around animals. Very much a passion oriented workspace where most people earn a very low income and only a few make a ton of money. I went to school for animal management but after working in different areas of the animal world (animal shelters, daycare, dog walking, dog/cat hotel, pet store manager, police dog training, normal dog school, dog grooming) I've transitioned into sales and I'm looking for my next step, as animals is now just my hobby/interest and will not do it as my main job. I still go to lots of animal oriented events, keep up my contacts that I made and keep my knowledge up to date, but it's just not paying enough for what I want out of life. And giving up that dream was a hard pill to swallow 2 years ago. Out of the 4 classes that started the animal care taking school with me, only one class actually graduated and only about 3 of my class of 25 are still working in the field about 7 years later. Veterinarians have one of the highest mortality rates of all professions (because people who don't take proper care of their animals, or don't have the money to give them proper medical care, will take it out on the vet when they can't magically do it for free, this mindset of bad pet owners is also a big reason I quit. Especially during the pandemic when a lot of animals were impulse purchases.)

If I have double 150K in 401K and 85K in credit card debt (with most cards above 20% interest rate) would I be looking at taking out 85K out of 401K with 10% penalty and then payoff credit card debt? or should I stop contributing to 401K and use that monthly amount to clear off my debt slowly
@lifewithyodit
@lifewithyodit Жыл бұрын
What I did in my situation was I just contribute up to the company match so that I don’t loss free money from my employer and I transfer all my credit card debt to 0% interest new cards or ask if same credit card company has another credit card in my case I asked discover to give me another credit card which was discover travel with 0% and Citi bank credit card with 0% interest for 18 month but make sure your eligible for 0%interest sometimes when you have a lot of debt you won’t be eligible, then pay as much as you can(not the minimum), I know it’s so frustrating and stressful but thinking about the bigger picture to be debt free will keep you grounded. In IWT book he strongly disagreed taking money out of 401k but If you decide to take the 401k you can take as alone and pay 7% interest to yourself but if your visa status allows you it’s better to do part time jobs and earn more. And also make sure you are using the conscious spending plan I start using it since April and it helps me a lot. It feels so good to see progress and since am doing it with my friends the journey is not boring we make each other accountable to our goal. Good luck on your debt free journey
@teresawood6830
@teresawood6830 Жыл бұрын
Excellent advice from Life with Yodit. Want to add that you also need to stop using the credit card so it won’t happen again. Dave Ramsey’s method of having a small emergency fund and getting out of debt quickly with paying off the smallest debt first, then building up to the largest debt one at a time helps many many people get out of debt. You need to live within your means along the way. Paying it from the 401k just moves the debt and it becomes due all at once if you quit or your job is cut. Once the debt is paid, you can make a conscious spending plan and plan your rich life by making goals to make that happen.
@wakeupstylellc
@wakeupstylellc Жыл бұрын
I took a loan from my 401K , I was only allowed to get half of what I had. It helped payed some of the debt but not all. So I stopped contributing and took a second job. Once I payed more than 60% of my debt, I stopped my second job and contributed 1% to 401K. When taking the loan, I’m paying myself back and it worked out since I didn’t lose my job or quit. Cutting down on phone bill and rent made the most impact and I was able to pay off my 60K debt in 2 years. I still have my 401K money, amd now I can go back to 10% contributing… on the path to retire with more than a million. Good luck on your journey ❤

I noticed that as well. They must have all federal loans. Maybe they are stashing away the payment in a savings account to get interest while payments are paused. They had about $40k joint so I'd imagine the minimum payment is not negligible. Hoping they took this into account while planning their goals, so they are still able to achieve their vacation on their timeline

Hi, I've interviewed people with $800,000 of debt, with everyday incomes, and with $10+ million of net worth. @@ramitsethi It may be very useful to show the current Very Low earners and via an interview or almost a hidden coaching to show the pitfalls of the very end of society which is never included in the constructive conversations about money… except of the pity parties Having $800,000 debt is absolutely not the same as being poor. $800,000 debt “usually” falls between the lines - great, expensive education, - probably a (relatively) well off family - expensive (again, relatively speaking) house - credit worthiness (at least at some point) as someone trusted that person with almost a million for their future personal advancement I absolutely love your content and I also believe it could be beneficial to cater to the needs at the very end of money spectrum. It is super difficult to show the way when there is a huge stone wall - perceived or the real 🙏

@@brandnewyorker I looked up the podcast he mentioned and that couple has a combined income of 145k. I don't know about you, but I don't consider that to be a normal income. But even if the income was normal, having 800k in debt is definitely NOT normal. I haven't been able to find any relatable guests on this show so far.

The percentages that he uses can apply to anyone, even if the answer is to make more money, simple but not easy. This happened to me 5 years ago. Looking at basic financial advice, I knew that my current role wouldn't pay me enough, no matter how long I worked. So I re-trained. Even though it took a couple years and some financial sacrifice short-term, I doubled what I would otherwise be making. And watching content like this helped me be smart with whatever I had all along the way. And the advice about talking about money with your SO in a healthy way applies to anyone regardless of your income.
