I am currently listening to a book by Flake, "Heute hat die Welt Geburtstag (Today is the world's birthday)". Also or especially there he is very humorous. But in a subtle and ironic way, too, sometimes. Here in this interview he's very, very ironic and you can't tell by looking at him. As you know, everyone grew up in the former GDR. Those must have been very formative years. I remember when I was a kid in school we should all bring groceries from home such as: Coffee (was very popular) and other durable food or goods. There we packed packages and sent them to a partner school in the GDR. So, as children, we already had an insight into the fact that there weren't as many consumer goods over there as here and that the life are probably not the same there as here at home. Richard told in the documentary "Rammstein in America" how he witnessed the attack at the 9/11 there in NY. He saw the 2nd plane fly into the tower. And he tells how the mood in the country changed afterwards, which is understandable! But to experience this for himself, how suddenly everyone wanted to "hunt" someone and this upheaval in society ... that probably shaped everyone and in the end this song too. They wrote it after the attack and during the Iraq war. Every country has its history, the good things and the bad. As a German, I know what I'm talking about. I think America is a great country. The People make the mistakes. All over. Would the band write this song again today, in the same way? Who knows? Germany is Capital Export World Champion and send there goods all over the world. And we certainly have cultural influences on other countries as well. From then and now. The good and the bad. That's how humans are. We all breathe the same air :-)

German humor...try and ironic. I love it. 1 minute inside and I had to laugh. 😁 Basically the song is a single diss from start to finish. But with German humor. And because German humor does not necessarily go hand in hand with American humor, it may not be particularly funny for Americans. Rammstein is at least aware of that. You can already tell from the first ironic sentences in the making of here. They said they were looking for weapons in Iraq to start the war because they wanted the oil and Sadam was politically uncomfortable for them. The Bush administration was perfectly aware that there was nothing to be found there. They also admitted that later. But no one was interested in that anymore because they won. Not because so many innocent people had to die. All wasn't even interested in the hindsight. Is in the past and doesn't itch. It was a war for reasons put off. Built on lies out of economic interest
@xsezz3 жыл бұрын
Flake did give it away with this bathroom statement. :) You'll get no arguments from me about the Iraq war. I think it also has to do with the media and the general attention span. Done with the last news story, people are getting bored, push something else, life moves on.

Haha! Yes, Flake, he is somewhat forceful on these issues, he is a man who liked the life he led on the German socialist side and that does not mean that he is a socialist or something similar, but there are things that he simply does not accept about globalization and I believe which is understandable, we all talk about our own experiences.

First of all... don't trust Flake!! He's so sassy here, everything is said sarcastically x,D At least the first half, he might have been more serious in the latter half. This goes back to me taking a long time before I got Flake's humour ;D And Paul, PC as always, calling the war in iraq as America being "annoying", lol. One can't deny that everything is "bigger" and "better" in America, that's sort of their brand :P For better or for worse. Obviously it's told from an outside perspective, but it does say a lot when you see how "much" of the American culture, influence and power seep into the rest of the world. There is sort of an imbalance there. The Rammstein poster is most likely superimposed on stock footage, though it threw me off first time watching as well :P And you think Santa is played by Till? You could be right of course, I just can't see it. Had just assumed it was an actor. Thanks for the reaction(s)! Great as always :D

As a European I interpret the exaggerating by this example, when you go dining with an American and the food is good, the American will say: 'omg, this is the best food I ever had', while in reality it's not the THE best the American ever had. And this goes for more, in my experience, Americans tend to exaggerate to come over as polite. (Of course take this with a grain of salt, I know this isn't true for all Americans).

I always assume everything Flake says is sarcastic, I cannot take him seriously anymore. It's interesting how much American culture has affected even Northern Europe, we have holidays now we didn't celebrate twenty years ago. It is quite imbalanced, how many Finnish traditions can you name? Not asking that to start anything, I just find it curious how powerful the image of America and its culture is everywhere. We see America as something big and wondrous, many good things come from there! (Also bad stuff, but I believe nothing is black and white) It's in the news constantly, since its foreign policy greatly affects every other country in the world. But you're right, you can get used to anything. Once the "culture shock" calms down you probably notice how similar people are everywhere. You're just used to different things.
@xsezz3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I got my eye on Flake now. :) Very well said and I agree 100%. Humans are highly adaptable and eventually everything will appear "normal" to you if you spend enough time in a situation for better or worse. Like you said, nothing is black and white. That would be too easy.

You can't take Flake serious if he is talking like this, his type of humor is definitely not for everyone (I also would not call it a stereotypical German humor) . I think that he is known for trolling like that, if he is annoyed with reporters or media or if he has no desire to talk about something (because it is redundant or he considers it boring). You just have to look at the ECHO speeches (German Music prize, mostly mainstream music). Usually when you win, you say something like, I thank X, Y, and Z, without them I would not have ... Flake: "Something like that may happen if the audience chooses the winner, and we want to thank ... ahhh... Vattenfall [electricity provider], otherwise it would be dark here" kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKG1lJ-Gl9J6kK8
