I interpret it that way. The red ray that can be seen everywhere is the timeline. The astronauts are time travelers who have to judge whether Germany should be spared or destroyed based on history. In the end everything collapses. I guess that means we've done too much shit. As you have already recognized, the rest are snippets from the history of Germany. The Black Lady is Germania, her children are dogs. That's mythology. The Credits was the piano version of "Sonne"

Hi, I'm from Germany. Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitarrs. A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the mother of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a Goddess or Joan of Arc. The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too. The battle of the Teutoburg forrest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history. The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees. The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees). In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle. After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background). The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion. The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket. This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain. A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp. The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses. The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man. The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events. PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war. The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too. PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII. PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before. PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet. Finally: The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄

@@spankygfunk11 Thanks a lot, I come from Germany and I see it everyday how Germans themselves hate their country which I find very strange. You barely see german flags here. It’s sad that you can’t be patriotic anymore because then you are immediately a nazi in Germany. I mean, I just don’t understand because our current generation has nothing to do with the terrible things that happened 80 years ago and there is so much more German history than just the 10 years of Nazis in the 1930s. I am glad that at least we have the EM (european soccer league) at the moment so that you can finally wave the German flag a bit and be proud of your country for the next 2 months.

The fact that he says ‘Will dich lieben und verdammen’ is the acknowledgment of the pride and love for ones country but the hate for the horrible things that have happened. There is no one out there that can do what Rammstein does and Till’s voice hasn’t aged a day. I visit Germany a lot for work (or did pre-COVID) and speak the language well enough to get around the country and follow Rammstein. This is perhaps the most powerful of their songs for me. Last time I was there, I was walking down a street in Berlin and literally tripped on a Stolperstein (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolperstein) which described the Jewish family who who had lived in the house I was standing outside. It was a man, listed as being exactly my age at the time I found the stone; his wife, very close in age to my wife; and a little girl, exactly the same age as my daughter. It ended with the line "Ermordet in Auschwitz" -- "Murdered in Auschwitz." It was the only time in my life I've literally broken down crying in the middle of a street. "Will dich lieben, und verdammen"

So I made eye contact & like I could feel my face getting red & the tears welling up & she grabbed my forearm & was like "it's ok dear, it's ok. I'm ok. You're ok." Most intense lift ride ever. We don't have a massive Jewish population where I was living in Australia so I hadn't seen one of the marks up close & it just floored me.

I don't think that the group is or was really concerned about making money of this video. They have enough other income sources. To me it seems to be more of a personal story and statement. The lyrics of the song describe very well the inner "Zwiespalt" most Germans feel and/or have when it comes to the history of their country, how to deal with it and to have some pride without being frowned upon. The video is a crash course in German history and because of the past of my beautiful and beloved country I do carry the same sentiment with me. I want to love my country and be proud, but at the same time I feel ashamed.

Imo its not about being ashamed, but keeping up the memory in the society so the bad things wont happen again. Also I don’t think that there is any reason to be proud of your country. @@acidgravy1 Well i mostly agree with you. Especially in the pure coincidence of nationality and theres nothing to be proud of in first instance. But consider, you, in a democracy, can "steer the country" to a certain point even as a simple resident by going vote for example. So isnt it possible to be proud to a certain point how your country acts in the country itself or the rest of the world? And if thats the case it should be possible to be atleast slightly proud of "his country" dont you think?

Every country including our own has skeletons in the closet, we cannot hide, runaway or rewrite our history. We all see many people trying to bring down statues because they want to rewrite history instead of using history to learn from it and become a better society . I had visited Auswitz and Hiroshima when i was still in the military those places gives you the ultimate reality on how the world really is. Right now this country is going the wrong path with all this political correctness that is poisoning everybody, in order to hide their history you have a political party that is trying to change history by putting a narrative that fits their political agenda rather than fixing real problems within this country. Instead of unifying everyone instead its pushing everyone to different sides which is shameful.

There are so many historical (cross) references (both to German history and the band's history) I don't even know where to begin^^. Just that much: What I love is how they draw parallels between historical events in a way that makes you reflect on the bad aspects of human nature which lead to the same kind of social/political mechanisms ( and in the end atrocities) over and over again (basically history repeating itself) , like the witch burnings of the 16th/17th century (religious fanatism) and the book burnings if the Nazis. This specifically is also a reference to the famous quote by German poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856): "Wherever they burn books they will also, in the end, burn human beings."

For first. This is not my description. I only copied. The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE

Its not just the bad thou. Its always a great achievement and something terrible at the same time. Like the feeling we germans have about our country. The Holy Roman Empire, large and glorious, but violent and doomed. The Hindenburg, the Largest Zeppelin but destroyed in a fire Blaze. Even the KZ scene. While there is the KZ it also shows the A4 Rocket in the Back. Technology so far beyond what everyone else build, ingenious and the first thing to reach space. But build from slave labour and wasted as a dumb weapon. Its always this duality they show here.

The scene when the singer (Till Lindemann) is dressed as a woman he is supposed to be Ulrike Meinhoff - one of the 1st generation leaders of the German left wing terrorist group RAF, which was active in the 1970s. The group eventually ended in the early 1990s which was the so-called 3rd generation RAF terrorists. They mainly targeted politicians and CEOs of large corporations or high-ranking bureaucrats. They eventually reached special forces like precision with their 3rd generation attacks. Police forces across central Europe battled with the group and essentially the German federal police was built up during that period and shows how a democratic state tries to respond to violence.

The music during the end credits is a piano rendition of their song, Sonne. The black woman (I don't know her name) represents Germania (Germany/Deutschland) throughout it's history. She was chosen because she would contrast with everyone else, making it easy to follow her through the timelines. Germania can also be seen in at least one other video (Amerika) of Rammstein's.

It always amazes me that almost no American recognizes the biggest aviation accident pre WWII ( the German Zeppelin) . And the accident happened in New Jersey (NAS Lakehurst). A point of historical inaccuracy was the paint scheme of the V2's. The V2's launching in the video were like the ones launched from Peenemunde for testing. The ones that flew to bomb UK were painted with olive drab camo like the launchers.

This song and video is a masterpiece. It describes the history of Germany, who is portraited as the black girl Germania. As you have said on the beginning, it is a love-hate relationship. They sing Germany, my heart in flames, wants to love and condemn you. Rammstein critically describe the history of Germany. There are things which were great and others not. The meaning of the puppies, well, it is some kind of german breed which is almost extinct, therefore Germania giving birth to them means a new generation of Germans, symbol of that they will survive. Many people though this is a racist transfobic video, but it is just because they do not speak german. Well as a Czech i understand both german and english - only my english is worse than my german as you can see on my shitty writing. The most interesting for me was the prison scene with the money raining from the sky. I could not find out, what that means, but then i found out. I think it symbolizes Germany before the WW2. After WW1 Germany was like a prisoner to the west countries, they had to pay large sums of money to the allies, mostly France, which Germany did not have. Therefore they printed money like crazy, but did not had the gold to compensate it. Money had no value then, people died because of hunger and ect. This was one of the reasons why Hitler got so much people on his side. He promissed them, he will get Germany to its right glory. I find it shocking this fact isn not teached in schools anymore. I see it as important, because if Germany would not been pushed to the state after WW1 maybe, just maybe Hitler would not have a strong cause to unite the Germans under the Nazi regime. It is a way how not to make such grave mistake again. Find yourself the things you described on the beginning and then compare the knowlede with the music video. I hope I showed you something new and interesting :). Keep up your great videos and stay safe and healthy. Best wishes from the Czech Republic :)

The video needs to be seen as a kind of critical review of Germany and it's history. Finally, the black lady does represent "Germania" - a kind of personalization of Germany through the different violent periods in German history including symbols and metaphors that might be more familiar for native Germans. In fact, if you are aware of this and know the Chorus ("Germany - my heart in flames ,/Will love and condemn you/ Germany - your breath cold/ So young - and yet so old") this video may make more sense.

The various scenes you see in the video are all periods of time in German history, as you read on Wikipedia. The lyrics are about the "Zweispielt" inside the history of Germany. For example, the line "So jung und doch so alt" means "so young, but yet so old" because of the modern Germany is a very young country, while Germany as a whole spends over a 1000 years. This is one of their best songs yet and I had the honor of seeing them live before covid happened

OH Lord I've seen it so many times! There's so many details! It's on the duality of feeling Germans have for their country. The woman represents Germany, in all her forms. She's been taken advantage of by the corrupt priesthood (cannibalized by the people who were supposed to care for them, metaphorically), invaded by Romans, she's delivered weapons and been rich but she's also been poor and been stabbed, she can inspire people to fight for her but she also makes people sad. She's been a bystander while the Germans did business, been a queen amongst all the countries in the Middle Ages, et cetera. Germans have been villains and victims, hence the band portraying Jews being hung and yet also being the Nazis that hung them.... The song itself says "You're young but you're old, I love you and hate you," all sorts of stuff. The astronauts bear her coffin. P.S.--the lipstick part was from the 80s, West and East Germany and things people had to do to survive and get across the Berlin Wall.

You wrote that very well. My nation has not dealt with some historical events yet. There are still taboos. In particular, the expulsion of millions of Germans from the Czech border. There is talk of German violence against the Czechs, but talking about post-war revenge is still controversial. My grandmother's family narrowly escaped extermination. The whole village was surrounded by the Wehrmacht and was just waiting for the order to shoot everyone. The illegal radio station Libuše was hidden in one house. Due to the same radio, they exterminated the village of Ležáky a month before. Fortunately, the action was canceled and my mother was born. My grandmother told me how after the war, men named "Revolutionary Guard" appeared in the town where she had moved, and they carried out the violence. She knew the men and said that none of them had personally suffered during the war. But they took a group of civilians, both women and children, and took them to the forest, where they were shot. The only "guilt" of those people was that they were Germans. There were many such events. Moreover, surprisingly, no one has been punished for these crimes. But even today, many people do not want to hear this and speak only of the deserved punishment for the betrayal committed by citizens of German nationality against the Czechoslovak state.
