Rammstein is a rare example when being serious is not being boring. They seems to me like a heavy weight boxers league in terms of the "punches" they make with their art and they always go provocative on any level and even if you dont know what type of sound or theme or genre they will use in the next hit they produce - you can always expect to be glued to the screen while you watch their show.

This song has a piano version, it has an official video and it was recorded just after finishing this video, it's just Till and the piano, it's really beautiful. I also recommend looking for the translation of the lyrics, it is a mixture of German children's stories and the fears that we have when we are little. 🔥🔥🇲🇽

My Heart Burns (English Translation) Now, dear children, pay attention I am the voice from the pillow I brought you something Have ripped it out of my chest With this heart, I have the power Blackmail the eyelids I sing until the new day comes A bright light in the heaven's sky My heart burns They come to you at night Demons, ghosts and black elves They crawl up from the cellar rows And will take a look under your blanket Little children listen now I am the voice from the pillow I brought something to you A bright light in the heaven's sky My heart burns My heart burns They come to you at night And steal your small hot tears They wait till the moon awakes And push them in my cold veins Little children listen now I am the voice from the pillow I sing 'til the day awakes A bright light in the heaven's sky My heart burns My heart burns My heart burns My heart burns With this heart I have the power To blackmail the eyelids I sing 'til the day wakes up A bright light in the heaven's sky My heart burns My heart burns My heart burns (My heart) My heart burns (My heart burns) (My heart burns)

my only objection would be the translation of erpressen to blackmail. it is correct but the proper translation would be press down or squeeze shut
@StabYourBrain3 жыл бұрын
"blackmail the eyelids" sounds dumb to be honest. I'd translate it as "force the eyelids" or "squeeze shut" or something like that. Blackmail is too literal, it doesn't work in english.

During the composition of the album Mutter, Till first choosed "Sandmann" as the title of the song that was finally released under the name "Mein Herz brennt" in 2001. In this text, Till offers a personal version of the legendary Sandman that we all know. The text of the demo (played live once at the Knaack Klub in 2000, before the album release) tells the story of a man who kills the sandman and stole his scalp to fool children. Till's final text is more elusive and takes root in the classic German literature, inspired by the version of the Sandman given by Ernst T. A. Hoffmann, a romantic writer and composer of the early nineteenth century, in his novel "Der Sandmann". The main character of this novel, Nathaniel, was marked in his childhood by the lawyer Coppelius that he identifies as the Sandman and the murderer of his father. Therefore, Hoffmann modifies the character of the Sandman, who terrorizes the children rather than just make them fall asleep. This inversion gave Till the idea of writing a text where a monster visits the children about to fall asleep, in order to steal their hot tears, and then inject them into his veins. The comparison does not end there. If Till voluntarily occults a big part of Hoffmann's story, both texts have lexical fields and topics in common. First, the eyes, as Nathanael thinks that Coppelius wants to steal his own. The heart too: Nathanael falls in love with Olympia, a girl who lives across the street, and feels the need to "scratch his chest" in order to defend her. The gesture is the same in Mein Herz brennt, where the monster rip off his heart from his chest. Finally when Olympia (actually an automaton) is dismembered by its creators, the heart of Nathanael literally burns, and that lead him to madness and death. It reminds us the chorus and title of the song, "Mein Herz brennt" (My heart burns). The evil beings also appear in both texts, wether they are Coppelius' owls or "schwarze Feen". Coppelius' shenanigans, presented as a demon, are often described as "infernal" by Nathanael. Moreover, when Olympia sings, Nathanael associates her with "ghosts". These "ghosts" resemble those of Mein Herz brennt, which interfere in children's dreams, like Olympia in the spirit of Nathanael. Till gives in Mein Herz brennt a very personal vision of the Sandman, which is the narrator of the text, largely inspired by Hoffmann. Till was also inspired by other elements of the German culture, such as "Das Sandmännchen" (The Little Sandman), a 1950s German TV show for children. It systematically began with the sentence "Nun, liebe Kinder, fein Gebt Acht. Ich habe euch etwas mitgebracht", an expression very close to the chorus of Mein Herz brennt

Okay, I have to tell you something about this video. Actually, these are two videos. For this music video, Rammstein opted for a director who works very visually. The story was about children who lived and suffered in a boarding school or clinic and terrible things happen. Similar to the lyrics. However, in the end his work was not really convincing because he had created incredibly good pictures, but he had little success in implementing the tempo and rhythm. So they finished working with the director. Rammstein had already spent a lot of money and didn't want to start from scratch. So they took another director who should build on the old video. The scenes in which the children, the YOUNG nurse and the birth can be seen come from the old part. For the new part it was thought that the building was a place where the band members were tortured as children and now return as adults to put an end to the building, their past and the nurse who is still alive. This explains why in some parts of the video you see the band members as doctors and in other places as neglected and broken men who are fleeing the clinic. When you know all of this, you see the video with different eyes. source: Rammstein - Mein Herz Brennt (Official Making Of) here on KZbin Thank you for your reaction!

@Swords Chant Actually, in many aspects Germany is still the most advanced country in the world. Just that the german population is not always the one to benefit from it or it gets outsourced. When it comes to technology, for example: Germany produces the best camera equipment worldwide. And it gets shipped directly to Hollywood. A german camera team will only come to use those cameras after about 5 years. And similar stories go through the whole industry, from clothing, over food (who doesn't know Haribo and Trolli sweets, both german companies), art supplies, cars and other electronics, cosmetics up to medicine.

The Sandman is said to come in the night and steal the eyes of children who stay up past bedtime, taking the eyes to his domain on the moon to feed it to his children. This was a mixture of two different versions of the same song. It is a version of the original 'radio' version which is a shortened version of the album version, and the piano part was the end of the remake, which is the version they remade which is just that: strictly piano and lyrics. Hope that made sense.

The nun protecting the kids has a double barrelled shotgun but is too frightened to use it against the Sandman (the monster that Till singing as) which tells you how frightened she is of how powerful he might be. This isn't a "normal" sandman but a super creepy, super powerful one. With allies who creep from the cellar shaft, demons, ghosts and dark faeries. They won't kill the kids, but they will certainly bring them nightmares that will last a long long time.
