What a vocal performance by Till, don't you think? And the piano is so intense. I don't know if someone mentioned this before, but parts of the lyrics are from a kid's TV show, where children are provided with a bedtime story. Every kid in Germany knows "Das Sandmännchen"- the sandman for generation. The line: "Nun liebe Kinder gebt fein acht. Ich habe euch was mitgebracht"- Dear children pay attention. I brought you something- is the line the sandmann says everytime before the story starts. Imagine that with how Till presents himself! Creepy and beautiful at the same time. With love from Germany 🤘😎

The album version is one of my favorite Rammstein songs, but this one let Till's voice shine! About the video: It was shot in an abandoned sanatarium (like the og video) and the "hole" is a bath for the patients. Very fitting, because the song is about nightmares....The fake smlie of Till reminds me of a clown, who has to be funny although he is feeling sad. Just like in this joke: "Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci."

In this song some elements of the more modern figure of the Sandman (as a friendly bringer of sleep) is mixed with the older figure of the "Alp" or "Alb", an evil parasitic kind of elf or fairy. In the song, the "Sandman" uses his heart (whicht is the Sand) to bring sleep, so that other evil beings can bring nightmares and harvest the tears of the sleeping children to nourish the "Sandmann". But like all evil creatures his existence ends with the dawn of day, when he vanishes without a trace as a small cloud of smoke.

The video was shot at "Heilstätten Beelitz" close to Berlin. A former spa/asylum/clinic for soviet soldiers in the GDR, now a lost place. I was there about two years ago. It was a cold foggy November day and the whole place had that feeling which Rammstein is giving me by this video and even more the official video. Love it, but was happy when the car was charged again and I could leave.

The video for "Mein Herz brennt" (My heart is burning) was shot in a former women's mental institution in eastern Germany. The inmates there were extremely tortured and also locked away during GDR times. I can very well imagine that the song lyrics are related to this.
@andreasbinner36572 жыл бұрын
Not really. Not sure where you got this from. The "Beelitzer Heilstätten" were build in 1898 as a tuberculosis sanatorium. During the GDR time after WWII, it was used by the USSR as a military hospital. After the fall of the wall, it got looted and damaged to the point becoming a "lost place". And it has been the crime scene for a double-murder in 1991 ...

Thank you for your thoughtful review! I think the song done with piano accompaniment has an operatic feel on a number of levels; the ending has parallels to Don Giovanni where the man he murdered comes out of a trapdoor on stage and drags him down to hell...

Even if I rarely write comments, I always love your reactions but this time I have to leave some informations about the "setup": first of all, this is no setup, this is a real (lost) place in my neighborhood near Berlin. This is the former "Badehaus" - Bathing House - in Quadrant 4 of a location called Beelitz Heilstätten. This was a sanatorium for lung diseases, build from a kind of health charity from the city of Berlin short before 1900. It was always a kind of hospital, in war times for wounded soldiers and after WW II it was occupied by the Red Army. After the German reunification the Red Army left, some parts were used for several medical institutions but very large parts were and still are more or less abandoned. Rammstein used different parts of this area several times in videos and there are also made parts from several movies. I was very often there in former times, when it was still possible, for making pictures.

He is the Sandman, the voice under the children's pillows. He looks frightening but he's a positive force, keeping demons and monsters away. Bad things are creatures of the night and come from the darkness of the night, from the cellar. They will terrorize the kids and give them nightmares. So he sings until the dawn to be a light in the darkness and shield the kids from the night's horrors. But it has a cost, he absorbs much negativity and violence in this fight, he has scars to prove it.
@peekaboosue2 жыл бұрын
I think that he was finally able to ascend...after making sure all the children were safe and at the same time atoning for his past sins he was finally set free. The original was released in 2001 then the piano version in 2012 so it follows the story from Till in the orphanage to protecting the kids and the emotions he shows is mainly anger followed by sadness then in the piano version his emotions are kinda bitter sweet? So now that he's done, he is finally set free. This is of course my interpretation 🙂❤️

We often think of a negative feeling but it is rather a form of anger that is expressed through musical art. and this feeling has a positive effect of letting people express their thoughts on the world and on their internal anger. of course not all metal bands are like that.
