anybody can just look up translations to these songs and get a general understanding of the songs' premise, but what i love about your videos is that you add a lot of extra context to the lyrics by diving into historical/cultural backgrounds, insights into grammar (ex. the Du/Sie bit at the beginning of this video), and inserting your own personality/interpretations as well. it's clear, it's personable, and it gives me a much greater appreciation for the music and lyrics and i appreciate that i have found this channel a little over a month ago :) keep it up, your stuff is great! looking forward to future videos, rammstein-related or not!

Personally I also liked how the structure it and the way of talking about this topic. On this album a lot of songs dealing with delicate topics, especially (sex)abusing.

Excellent Dave, you have given a fantastic explanation for a song that I have wondered about. It was a song that brought attention to some shameful behaviour by some members of the clergy. A brave statement, which is easy for a powerful rock band but not so easy for a helpless child in supposed 'care'. Unfortunately it is still going on as I type and not just within the church...
@Darkfist007

My really limited knowledge of German made me pick up on the church-ie words and the whole "Reveal yourself" bit made me sorta think it was about the whole misconduct in the church. After reading the lyrics I really liked how they addressed it, but they way you break it down, and show how some of the words are just normal words really makes me appreciate the effort Till puts into these songs. Have watched a few of your other vids on the subject and find the breakdowns rather fascinating, keep up the good work man. Rammstein and Saltatio Mortis, are two of my favorite bands lately, Rammstein for several years but Saltatio Mortis just recently, so it's good to get a sort of deep dive on the lyrics.

While I might disagree with some of the English meaning, I would have to bow to your interpretation as I do not speak German. I think it's about time this subject is tackled widely and not swept under the rug like it has in the past. Kudos to Ramstein for doing this song. "Das Licht" reminded me of this passage from the New Testament, in which Jesus exhorts his followers to live righteously, so that they might set a good example and bring glory to God. Essentially, what believers do is witnessed (and judged) by others: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matt. 5:14-16, NIV) So in the song's context, then, this might mean that through perpetuating abuse and attempting to cover it up, the Church has extinguished "the light of the world." They are no longer able to illuminate the way to God, and, at the same time, their evil deeds cannot be hidden; all must be revealed.

Destro7000 i thought it was about the people that have religious clothes that covers your body. ”Versteck dich nicht” as ”Dont cover your self” and maybe ”Wir verlieren das licht” as peoples bodys ”shining” compared to the black clothes. I also thought the line ”Kein gott zeigt sich” (no god shows) was like an encouragement to people stop cover themselves and believe in god. But i was reeally wrong 😂😂

At first listen the song sounded more like crusade inspiration(Not great at German so I can't describe evrything without translation), as "Zeig Dich!" could sound simmiliar to "Deus Vult!" Although, when I looked up lyrics and translations, it strated to get clear the song is about children church abuse - topic Rammstein previously covered in their song "Hallelujah!", one of my all-time favorites. Lines "verbreiten und vermehren" and "vergebung aller sunden" might actually be interconnected, hinting to attitude of priests, implicated in said child abuses, were not considering that as sin, but as God-worthy process(or maybe just hiding the facts, in which case it makes sence who actually have to "reveal itself") Phrase "wir verlieren das licht" can relate to both loss of hope in the almighty powers of God and to overall displeasure with... pretty much everything going on in the world nowdays, I think. And the last, but not the least, "Der Himmel farbt sich rot" could mean(as you mentioned) the dawn of sun, which symbolizes pasing of time without any meaningfull changes(Sun rizes, sun sets. The cycle goes on). But also this could be a hint to upcoming Apocalypse(or Judgement Day, as it's called in the Bible), and the desperation of lyrical eye for justice. I always enjoy this sencefull dualism in Till's lyrics, it always makes good discussions and brigtens imagination.

Yes, I agree with that. The German pope, who is still alive but is retired at the moment, was shamed because someone close to him covered up for a lot of inappropriate behavior by priests in the German Catholic Church. That must be what he is referring to.

Latin teacher here. Those words in the beginning are not Latin but rather seem to present the impression of being Latin.
@DefinitelyGerman
@DefinitelyGerman 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for clarifying that. That was also my impression. Do you, by any chance, have an idea what some of the words could potentially refer to in terms of real Latin words?
@Ensgnblack
@Ensgnblack 5 жыл бұрын
VlogDave The first word is made up, but the -mus ending is indeed a Latin ending for the first person plural, So if it were a real Latin word it would be translated as “we ______” The second word is similar to crucifix, of course, though not an actual Latin word. Murisuri does not look like anything to me. “Extraspection” looks to me to be a play on the English word “introspection” perhaps suggesting to look outside of oneself? Introspection comes to English from Latin (as opposed to German), so this word also appears Latin-like, though is not an actual English word. “Lumine” is actually Latin. It is the ablative singular of “lumen” and could be translated as “in the light”. If I had to guess, the band did not consult with anyone for these words, and simply went with stuff that sounded Latin. I don’t think they actually wanted to use any Latin words, so I think what they came up with, this pseudo-Latin, was exactly their goal. This is, of course, just my speculation.

@@Ensgnblack "crucifixus" is perfectly a latin word (though misspelled): it's the past perfect participle of the verb "crucifigo" (to attach to a cross, rather obvious meaning). "Murisuri" looks like "sticks of the wall" (muri in genetivus sing., suri - nom.pl) "exmustamus" - could be a misspelled "exmuto". Run/move away. Or change completely. "Lumine" could also mean sth like "with one's eyes". "Spectio" is looking for a sign/observing nature to make a prediction (strange ancient traditions). "extra" is outside or additional. Then, all in all the text could be translated as: We are changing, Jesus (*as he was crucified), Behind the sticks of the wall, we are looking for signs, We are changing, Jesus, With our eyes we are looking for signs .... Then, the name of the song "Show yourself" is very logical here. Though, not sure about Rammstein's idea about these lines.

Great analysis! A couple things to add: - "kein Engel in der Not" could also reference the biblical apocalypse and that the current situation ("Not") will, unlike the biblical apocalypse, not result in Godly empire as there is no angel announcing the apocalypse - "der Himmel färbt sich rot" could also relate to some sort of apocalypse (as the sky becoming red/purple is commonly associated with the apocalypse) which strengthens the aforementioned meaning of "kein Engel in der Not" because combined the lines state that because God does not show himself ("kein Gott zeigt sich"), there is an apocalypse ("der Himmel färbt sich rot"), but as there aren't any angels ("kein Engel in der Not") this is not the biblical apocalypse and thus this is more of an apocalypse that leads to the demise of the Church. - the "aus Versehen" in "aus Versehen sich an Kindern vergehen" could relate to a statement made by the Pope which basically states that the priests who did it did it because they were possessed by the devil. As being possessed by the devil and the actions commited under such alleged influence are deemed accidental, the priests abused the children "aus Versehen". BTW that line is my favourite in the entire song, it just fits so well and describes the situation to the point.
@Bassistking
@Bassistking 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave. Just a couple things. The intro lyrics are in Latin, which is why you may be having troubles with translating those words. Also, “the sky turns red” was a nearly identical line in Lindemann’s song “Childeren of the Sun” with the line “Sky turns red, a frightful sign” so I’m taking that as what he meant for that part.

This is one of the best songs on that album, but as a Christian, I find it displeasing when people blame or expect God to fix human problems just because he can. Metaphorically, a parent doesn't ever want to see their child hurt; simultaneously, a parent knows in some cases their child must fall when learning to walk or ride a bike. In the bigger picture, crime disease dishonesty etc. will happen, not just because God allows it, but because it's a fate we were allowed to choose for ourselves. For this reason i find it ignorant when people demand God to "show himself" in times of darkness just because a situation seems so dark they how could anyone allow something to continue if they had the power to change it. A parent can prevent their child from a car accident by never letting their child drive, but how angry would that child be with their parents over protecting them all the time.

This song opens the eyes of the people that although the church is supposed to be there to forgive the sins of people and turn to the faith of God. Very well done on your part. Much respect for Till and the band having the courage to tackle this subject. They're really gonna piss off the church and this is a topic that should be addressed and needs to be thrown in the face of the pope and every religious leader who have allowed and excused this behavior. Having German in my heritage, I want to learn more about not only the language but the history, etc. You are a wonderful teacher. I recently read that students are using lines from Rammstein in their German studies and language classes🤘. Talk about an epic band . I also saw a video of Till signing autographs and the gentle way he took the hand of a fan's baby. Obviously there's something deeper here in this song. My love and respect for this band continues to grow. Of course the music is beyond awsome and Till is one of the sexiest men ever. But there seems to be more here such as lessons and a way to reach music lovers and kids through their music which I find brilliant. Thank you so much for your translation and interpretation of these songs and for making us think beyond just dancing and headbanging 💕
