We are drifting towards the end No rest, only striving forward Infinity waves on the shore Caught in the flow of time This is one of my favourite Rammstein (pronounced Ramm-shtine) songs, I like the slower ballads they are (in my opinion) powerful and poetic. The three figures are the Norns. The Norns are deities in Norse, Germanic mythology who are responsible for shaping human destiny. Their names are Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld. They stand for "what was", "what is" and "what is to come". They also care for and protect the "world tree" Yggdrasill, which stands at the center of the universe (seen in the video as an kind of "hourglass" or "tree of sand" where the women give birth to the children). Yggdrasill also connects the nine worlds of the Norse, Germanic mythology like Asgard, Vanaheim, Alfheim, Midgard (world of human beings), Jötunheim, Muspelheim, Nidavellir, Niflheim and Helheim.

This is my favorite Rammstein song. As someone already pointed out, the three figures are not embodiments of Death, but of Nordic time deities called Norns, though I spotted Death as part of one of the sand sculptures within the video. Which makes sense, as everything perishes -- in time.

The video and song tells that we humans are all a little part of the timeline and that time is going on no matter what. The black robed figures can be seen as "time guardians" or maybe the "Norns" out of north mythology. They guide you from the "otherworld" (where cildren are born) into the real world where they decide your desteny and as soon as your time has come, they will guide you back into the "otherworld" where you become a part of time (symbolized by the girl that walk´s into the the "time stream" that looks like sand). Over all, the falling or rising sand (like in an hour glas) is the representation of time line / time stream that starts with birth and ends in rebirth. The video mixes forward and backward played scenes a lot and shows in a loose order how people are born (big timestream with birth giving mothers), life (scene of farmers) and die (many other scenes, where you see that soldiers where children who play "war" and where babies before that). The band members play pretty much every role in the video. In the "otherworld" they wear blindfolds (time sees no difference or other things) and help the mothers giving birth, give the babies to the time guardians who guide them into the world. And for the record : Everything in this video that looks like sand, is in fact real sand, no CGI here. All sculptures are made from sand, also. And at the very end of the video (at least i interpret that) where the time stream ends, the band will be still there due to the music they made.... or.... they will be a part of time and will always be there.

Three Women of destiny are mentioned by Name: They are called Urd (fate), Verdandi (that which becomes) and Skuld (guilt; that which is to be). Their Names are regarded as Norse equivalents of common medieval Concepts of Time in the form of personifications of the Past (Urd), Present (Verdandi) and Future (Skuld).

Great reaction. For me this song is about the relentless nature of time and life. As much as we may appreciate and want to hold on to those beautiful moments the fact that those moments are etheral are part of what makes them beautiful and precious. That time always marches on is a beautiful but hard thing. In the beginning they show time going backwards from death to life and even to childbirth. The final scene is forward from sickness to death and rejoining the endless stream of time that the sand flowing represents. The fact that the sand is flowing upwards in reverse of an hourglass may represent re-birth? Anyways great song, great reaction. Thank you.

Thank you for reacting to Zeit! ♥ This is a beautiful ballad from their last album, focused on time and passing. And since it is the title song - the message here is even stronger. Hits me every single time... These "grim reapers" are actually representing time - past, future and present. Till sings about how time is unstoppable and irreversible, yet we can see just the contrary - except the last scene with death of farmer's daughter. If you would like to stay in the mood, there is another beautiful ballad from Rammstein: "Ohne Dich". Of course, lyrics are important so get it from educatedmarine, you will have English subtitles ☺ However, if you would like to see something completely different, spectacular and powerful - please search for "Rammlied 4K". This particular video shows the magic of opening Madison Square Garden show 😁 What's even better - you will hear the perfect pronunciation of "Rammstein" 😎 Have a nice day! 😊

Great reaction^^ The three creepy figures are called time keepers by Rammstein. Doubtless an referring to the Norns. According to the "Völuspa", Norns (Nornir) are three immortal female figures in pre-Christian, old Germanic/Nordic mythology who sit on the banks of the Urd River at the root of the world ash Yagdrasil and spin the threads of fate for gods and humans. (The three sinister figures in the Rammstein video undoubtedly provide an analogy) The names of the three Norns are: "Urd" (fate / that which has become) She is an old woman who constantly looks back over her shoulder at the time long past. "Verdandi" (Present / The Being) She has the form of a young woman who is always looking ahead. "Skuld" (Future/The Becoming) Unlike Urd and Verdandi, Skuld is an unpredictable force that has no love for gods or humans. She wears a veil and holds a book or scroll in each hand. Her gaze is always directed in the opposite direction of Urd's gaze. The Nornir spin the thread of Fate and life for every human being, and when that thread is severed, the human's life ends. Remnants of this mythology can still be found today in the Germanic/Nordic language area. There is a commonly used saying for a person who is in danger of death. "His life hangs by a thin thread only".

Its a work of art, so your interpretation is as good as every one else's. I think the three things that look a bit like grim reapers are generally recognized as being nornir, nordic gods representing past, present and future. Urd (also spelled Urdr, or Weird, meaning “Past”), Verdande (“Present”), and Skuld (“Future”). Open to interpretation is how we dónt want to escape time. Because without time: we would nót excist. We are in this world here, now, thanks to time, forming each moment into the next. Death is one aspect of time. But time itself: gives life. The sand to me (but this is a very personal interpretation) also represents the cosmic consciousness, that we are all made out off. We often see ourselves as individuals, but thats just a projection of the cells that make out our body. Look into one of these cells: and it is 'alive' in itself. Doing its own thing. Communicating with the others nearby. But that cell itself is also only a projection of its parts: the countless molecules it is build from. And zooming in again: what are these molecules. Mainly nothing. A wave or two colliding. A vibration. That is everywhere. Then zoom out: see a murmuration of birds. A school of fish. Moving as one. We are just point of views in time and space: for the background consciousness. We are Odins eyes. The same 'person' that is looking from within me: is looking from within you. We are truly one, but dont recognize mostly. I compare our bodies to leaves on a huge tree, the tree is hidden by time (its in the past), and it only holds us up (the current leaves, each leave is one person). We think: we are all 'apart'. But we are, in fact, behind the scenes, one. Its a bit hard to explain, and also rather religious. Another way to explain it is that there is a lake. Then a scoop of the liquid is taken out of the lake, and frozen. The ice-cube is a human, and placed with the other ice-cubes. After death: the cube melts into the water: merging. Dispersing. But present in every living thing from then on. Like the sand in the video. We are not the ice cubes. We are the lake. We are not the leaves. We are the tree.

So beautifully said! I love your metaphors. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideals. I do believe that we are all part of 'The One" source. Just one explainantion of a symbol. What you called raper is the old germanic sister "fate". In Germany, we call her Urd od Urth. The old germanic tribes called her Urðr. Accroding wikipedia: "Urðr (Old Norse "fate") is one of the Norns in Norse mythology. Along with Verðandi (possibly "happening" or "present") and Skuld (possibly "debt" or "future"), Urðr makes up a trio of Norns that are described as deciding the fates of people. Urðr is attested in stanza 20 of the Poetic Edda poem Völuspá and the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning."

Rammstein by and large never explain their lyrics, so always remember that comments about what the lyrics truly mean are personal interpretations. With that caveat up front, I see the three characters as time keepers, not the grim reaper or a personification of death. It’s ultimately about the passing of time, how it is inevitable and it’s up to us to make the most of the time we have.

If you saw Sandman last year - the 3 black figures are timekeepers and, as someone already said, representing past, future and present like the 3 sisters in Sandman. The actual reapers were the band members in the last verse. For Rammstein (which you pronounced almost correct btw) it is common to accumulate additional ideas, meaning, that there is a subject or a message and everything will add to that - the lyrics, the music, the video and the live performance. All of that is added on top if you will. Also they like to have visual puns. They put figures of speech into pictures, here for example the sands of time, the mentioned reapers, the giant hourglass, the rough sea they navigate in the beginning (not all of those are images from english or german language) all meant to describe aspects of time.

@@TheSpeakEasyLounge Sandman is a Netflix show based on a rather famous series of comic books written by Neil Gaiman. Season 1 aired last year and was immensly popular. It certainly has suspense elements, and having to do with dreams, also features nightmares, but horror is too far fetched. If you intend to do more Rammstein in the future, i would recommend "Angst". The video is a bit less cryptic and easier to understand, mainly because the references to other works are far fewer, also the importance of color and the way it is used is relatively clear. Nevertheless it is a high quality production and the message is conveyed in multiple ways.

A TRANSLATION Some things should be, some shouldn’t We see, but we are blind We throw shadows without light After us there will be a “prior” Youth will turn into hardship We keep dying until we live We die alive to death We are drifting towards the end No rest, only striving forward Infinity waves on the shore Caught in the flow of Time Please stand still, stand still Time This should keep going forever Warm body will soon turn cold Future can’t be conjured Does not tolerate any stay Create and immediately destroy I’m lying here in your arms Oh, if only it could just be forever! But time knows no mercy Already, the moment is over Time Please stand still, stand still Time This should keep going forever Time It’s so nice, so nice Everybody knows The perfect moment Time Please stand still, stand still When our time has come, it’s time to go Stop when it’s most beautiful, the clocks stand still The moment is so perfect, but time keeps ticking A moment, please stay, I’m not ready yet Time Please stand still, stand still Time This should keep going forever Time It’s so nice, so nice Everybody knows The perfect moment 'Zeit' Original German lyrics Manches sollte, manches nicht Wir sehen, doch sind wir blind Wir werfen Schatten ohne Licht Nach uns wird es vorher geben Aus der Jugend wird schon Not Wir sterben weiter, bis wir leben Sterben lebend in den Tod Dem Ende treiben wir entgegen Keine Rast, nur vorwärts streben Am Ufer winkt Unendlichkeit Gefangen so im Fluss dеr Zeit Bitte bleib stеh’n, bleib steh’n Zeit Das soll immer so weitergeh’n Warmer Körper ist bald kalt Zukunft kann man nicht beschwör’n Duldet keinen Aufenthalt Erschaffen und sogleich zerstör’n Ich liege hier in deinen Armen Ach, könnt es doch für immer sein!

...i like your grandmas approach. Because to "fuck" is also a very human and natural thing to do or our species would be extinct long ago. Also it is usually an enjoyable pasttime occupation - and i really dont understand how that could develop into a swear word in the states and elsewhere. So much so that it gets bleeped out as if our kids wouldnt use it anyways, or just because it irritates some grown up puritans. I think the context matters, if i want to insult someone - he will notice it, no matter which word i use. Compared to some of the words we use here in finland, it has no power. And it really should not influence anyones bloodpressure.

I can‘t help myself. There is a ton of american reactors doing this Rammstein piece of art. Almost every single one watching totally chilled the war scene and shooting and dying. And then freaking out on the birth scene. Makes me shake my head and I wonder if that tells me that much about the state of american society that I assume it might be degraded to?

It is weird, now that you mention it. I guess we are maybe getting a little to familiar with killing on our screens. That is sad. Birthing isn't something that is shown much, so it affects us differently somehow? IDK. Things that make you go, Hmmm...lol. (That was a song, back in the day)

@@TheSpeakEasyLounge I feel honoured by your reply. Normalising the drama and dramatising the normal. I guess hypocracy is a systematic fault, that leads to crumble (all) our western societies. I‘m not entirely optimistic about where we‘re heading, though.

I am right there with you. We are at a scary point, for sure. I'm so used to seeing TV, Films, with death & violence, it doesn't rattle me, but kill an animal? I freak out. You really hit the nail on the head, "Normalising the drama and dramatising the normal."

I will explain you: The three black dressed women are the three Nornes. In the old german fore-christian mythology they represent the past, the present and the future. The Norne of the past is named Urd (the destiny). The Norne of the present is Verdandi (that what is now and what will be in the next moment). The Norne of the future is Skuld (that what will grow out of the past and the always changing moments). The Nornes spin the rope of life. They decide where the rope begins and where it ends. In Germany we still say „life hangs at a thin rope“ when things are getting dangerous or somebody is really hurt or sick. The Nornes are no gods. They just represent the time of a life. People can‘t influence time and a lot of things that happens. The life of everyone is created by the Nornes what means by the time. And we all sitting in the same boat mightless in the sands of time. This is the credo of this song. And have you heard the breath at the end? It‘s the first and the last breath. When the soul comes into you and when the soul leaves you!

Not the Grim Reaper much much older than Christianity. These are the Norns, there hooded sisters aka, Time Weavers, Time Spinner's, Time Keepers. Very basically they represent Past, Present and Future. They are closely related to the Greek/Roman Fates but are from early Celtic and Norse beliefs predominant in Northern Europe before even the Romans. They are not taking the babies they are returning them to the womb, the first part of the video time is running backwards. The Grim Reaper comes from the Black Death a Pisonifcation of death or King Death or the Angel of Death who is one of the 12 Archangels named Azrael.

The correct pronounciation of Rammstein would be "Rumshtyne" ....... not "Ramsteen". 1.) Make sure to roll the R a little bit. 2.) The A is pronounced like the english U in "fun" or "gutter". 3.) The ST is pronounced like the SHT in "fishtail". 4.) The german EI is almost pronounced like the english IE or Y - like in "pie" or "why". And for more suggestions: Pretty much all of their videos are masterpieces! But I also highly recommend "Angst", "Deutschland", "Sonne", "Dicke Titten", "Zick Zack".

No it 's not. There is no u like in fun or gutter. The a in Ramm is just an a, nothing else. Watch Rammlied, if you want to hear it from the band itself.

@@Thunder1976NL Dude, I'm German! And I do know how it should be pronounced correctly... Of course, in the spelling of Rammstein, there is no U. 🙄 I was just talking about the sound of the letters. And the German A in Rammstein almost sounds like the Englisch U in "fun" or the Englisch O in "mother"! In contrast, the Englisch A mostly sounds like the German Umlaut Ä - for example in "many". The only cases where the A is pronounced like a German A in English is when it is used long, as in "father". Since Rammstein is spoken quickly because of the double M after the A, most Americans intuitively use the English A (sounding like "Rämsteen") - which is wrong.

In the old Norse-Germanic mythology, three women of destiny (Norns = the murmuring) are named. They are called Urd (fate/past), Verdandi (that which is and is becoming) and Skuld (guilt; that which should be). Their names are considered Norse equivalents of common early medieval concepts of the time in the form of personifications of the past (Urd), present (Verdandi) and future (Skuld). Even if these three names correspond to more recent ideas, they seem to go back to an old Germanic idea of a nameless trinity of women of destiny. According to Mela Escherich (* January 31, 1877 in Munich, † September 26, 1956 in Wiesbaden, was a German art historian and writer), the old mythology only knew one norn, namely Urd.[3] According to the Völuspá - (isl.), Old Norse. Vǫluspá - "Prophecy of the seer (völva = seer + spá = prophecy / the Völuspá is considered the most important poem of the Nordic Middle Ages. ) - the Norns live at the root of the world ash tree Yggdrasil at the Urd spring, the source of fate, named after the Urd is. Urd has the figure of an old woman who steadily looks back over her shoulder into the past. In return Verdandi has the figur of a young woman. Skuld always looks into the opposite direction of Urd into the future. The Norns knitt the string of life for every human being and if the string is cut, the person dies. The Norns also direct the fortunes of humans and even the Æsir (Nordic/Germanic gods).
