I understand how you could apply this technique for faster ride cymbal patterns, snare patterns and for a blazing 2 stroke roll. What would the firing order for each hand be for a single stroke roll?

Phenomenon, when I saw that video a couple of years ago, I was blown away and I thought I had to practice it. I was optimistic at first but I soon realized how impossible that is. So even after hundreds of hours into this, I'm not nearly close to his speed. I've been playing percussion and drums for 40 years and thought I had good hands, but no..not that good. Giving up.

I have two questions. Are you limited with this technique to that much arm/wrist movement or can you really swing at it? Two So the maneuver is in the hands and not dependant on rebound? I notice the arm apears fixed not moving much, and he just changed the meaning of slow med fast

Amazing technique. I became friend with an american drummer from LA in the 70s as I was touring Tunisia with the Tabarka festival. He shown me ways to practice this. This guy was not as fast as Ramon but he was damn fast. He was touring too, drumming with a latin fusion band from the US. I have practiced this, in and out since and it changed my playing to the best. But I never truly focused on it. To get to such speeds... rent a hut on a beach in Thailand for ten years and only take your pad and sticks. Don't come back before you're done! This is hard work man! You've all my respect Ramon..

1 - He twists the thumb and hand a little towards the side of the stick, to help with the down motion 2 - The movement is 99% fingers. He uses a tiny bit of wrist motion just to adjust the height of the stick, but the other adjustments are done 99% with fingers only. 2.1 - That can be proven in 8:20, watch the snare drum. He subconsciously plays some notes on the snare, and his hand is stand still, 99% fingers there. 3 - You can also see that his fingers movements are quite flowish, I mean, they aren't robotic in any way. It's like he trained every single finger one by one, just like we do with our limbs. 4 - Time. We all know the answer to mastering something. Lots of practice + time. 5 - He probably isn't 100% sure about what he does. Every master goes through that. Masters just focus on something until they master it without realizing how far they come. What we need to learn from Ramon is *FOCUS*, not only technique. Most footballers don't know what they did when they do something amazing... They're SO focused that the subconscious takes place.

I don't at all think your genes are what's limiting you. I think it would help you to watch and listen to the video more. Try to be sure you are doing exactly as he does. Keep in mind the importance role of gravity in this technique. Try hard to utilize gravity maximally. Notice the slight change in hand-wrist angle. I think early learning on this is best done with a soft roll as it will help you more easily learn the feel of the physics of what is happening that makes this workable. Most people probably can't be as awesome as Ramon with it, but I feel certain you can do better than you have so far...technique.

Yes absolutely, if one asks me I think very few people actually realize how insane Ramon's playing really is, especially with the push pull. He's a phenomenal artist as far as musicality goes & with the next level technique he's in a league all by himself! Another thing to is that in another vid Ramon says he's been practicing/using the push pull for 20+ years! That's what he's sooo proficient with it, to have the capability with push pull like Ramon take multiple years to master, I've been practicing push pull for around 7+ years and barely can push 16th notes @ 130-140bpm. I've been more consistent with practicing the technique the past 2 years which has been a big help. Therefore unless one is literally practicing this technique for 30min+ every day for years on end, to get to the level Ramon is at will take extreme persistence & patience, and even with serious dedication it will take years! With that being stated, I still find it incredibly inspiring and hope to one day be able to do what Ramon does and more, all the best to all the drummers/artists out there! 💯🙌

Though I love the speed that these techniques grant us, it is such a small section of drumming. Limb coordination and timing are so essential to drumming that it gets glossed over compared to speed (obviously, it is flashy, impressive, etc.). The reason I say this, is that I hate to see talented drummers or drummers in made bands have to quit, because they are chasing the arms race of faster, bigger, louder. I will use Matt Garstka as an example. He is at the top of his game and now he has to quite touring, because he has carpal tunnel. Another metal drummer burnt out on-stage and on tour. Now, I know some might say, well if they played properly, that wouldn't happen. I disagree, though this is just my opinion. If you practice this, you will get faster. But, faster doesn't mean better. Nice video! Very educational.

Push pull technique starts with wrist on 1st stroke and fingers on 2nd stroke. This guy has developed the technique to the point where he mainly uses the thumb (+partially wrist) for 1st stroke and fingers for 2nd stroke. Thumb has lower mass than wrist as a whole - so he's using less (conserving more) energy which equals faster speed. Don't overlook that he will be inherently using gladstone technique which is fundamental to the Push pull tech - never using any muscular energy to lift the stick in an upwards motion. Any drummer of any level would struggle unless they are familiar with (or are lucky that they naturally use) the gladstone technique. Don't be fooled by the "Even beginners can learn this". This guys technique is impressive beyond belief. It would have taken 1000s of hours of practice - which would have been primarily in his mind (thinking/connection with his muscular motions).

Very cool ! I´m practicing this tecnique now. I think it should be remark that the key, and the prerequisite before learning this tecnique is and absolute control of the "Free Stroke" ( also called "rebound stroke", "Stone stroke", "stop at the top" , "Gladstone tecnique", etc, etc ) because the key is to accept the rebound , and to learn this takes time. This tecnique was invented by Billy Gladstone who was teacher of Buddy Rich, and Buddy learned this tecnique from Billy. 90% of the professional drummers don´t let rebound the stick enough , so they work too much. This is super advanced tecnique , I don´t think it shoud be practiced by someone that don´t have a total control of the Free Stroke. Thanks for the video, it´s incredible for watching

Javi Tron I totally agree, control and maximum use of gravity apparently even WITHOUT a rebound Bounce, is what makes this so Incredible.

I'm not a drummer but I can listen and watch them play until all day...so sometimes I end up at videos like this one and I find something really dope. This time it was not only a technique but also dope slow motion w/sound which drove the point home for me. Thanks, another sick drummer to check out!
