Thanks for posting this video; I have long been stuck at a single-stroke speed plateau and just started to dive deeper into different hand techniques. This video is incredibly helpful and inspiring in that regard. On the first push-pull you demonstrate, I notice that you’re using a middle-finger fulcrum with your index finger loose and pointing down. I checked out a Gordy Knudtsen video about push-pull and he uses an index-finger fulcrum. What are the advantages to using the middle finger rather than the index? Should I learn it one way, both, or just go with whatever feels most natural?

Encouragement to you; Exhaustive study into the (many) avenues of the techniques to play the one handed roll. This is why one is looking up this particular aspect on U tube,(one of the best teaching aids and tools to 'learn how to learn', pretty much anything). At the present, what brought oneself to look further into defining a grip both left and right, match and traditional, was developing 'feel' for up tempo swing, 400 bpm, smooth with feel, sustainable and enduring. 400 with the 5 stroke rolls and the rest of the trimmings, both left and right hand lead, with all the comping, ie (check out sacha k, advanced jazz beat combinations( basic jazz ride pattern, incorporating basic bass drum and snare combinations, as starting reference, and learning both left handed and right handed lead(this is ones personal quest)I see people 'talking about whatever goes for the left, goes for the right, but name but one who can play it left hand setup exactly the same dynamic setup right handed,( not many if any). The truth is, one will always favor one side more then the other.(there is a old proverb that says; know, that no man or woman can serve two masters; they will prefer one over the other. In drums though it is case of striving to achieve an evenness and continuity dynamic wise between the left and right. No greater example is this experienced in the exercise of learning to play a decent 'single stroke roll'. In the case of Up tempo swing, At 300, this is the standard. However there are scary cats out there, swing-in at 400, and with crazy good feel,( Trilok Gurtu). Technique, yes, it is a vehicle to get one to where one wants to go, the land of 'FEEL' However, to be 'balanced' and ooze 'Feel' is what its all about isn't it? The fact that 'nothing is impossible, to them that believe,( hearing it and doing it= 'practice', lots of it, and the 'attitude', to 'never give up'. The motivation, the ulterior motivation(s) behind 'why' does one do what one does, is where the true foundation and 'substance' of what a man or woman is truly defined as a person. This is the question one must ask oneself. Here is an analogy that is food for thought. The pure person will be stuck on a island with nobody around to impress, and no chance of getting off the island ever. the person who has, 'the 'peace' to go beyond the passion, to practice they're talent and further they're craft or talent, will 'love' what they do and 'grow' always,to get better and better, irrespective of 'attention, notoriety, fame or fortune. One of the rewards will be 'learning' itself, and seeing the improvement with each passing of the time. Music and musicians are like different types of fruit. Everybody wants to bring something good to the table, for those to enjoy and walk away wishing to return for a little bit more. However, the Greatest Wisdom is to seek not the fruit, (in this case, the music, the instrument chosen to learn, or the musician most inspired by, to worship like some demigod,), instead it is the most prudent to seek the source of where the fruit came from in the first place; and give praise to that, because in every due season, there will be an abundance of fruit to eat and enjoy from that life giving tree. When and where does 'inspiration' come from? Us or, is it, through us? As with music and a song; everything in this world has an author or a responsible artist. Likewise when i go to the beach and watch a beautiful sunset, i am in awe and deep thankfulness to witness something not fashioned or made by the hands of man. To Whom do i 'thank' then? For what it is worth, thank you for sharing your studies and progression. Love your work, in particular like some of your brush work. If there was a good reason why we are all here on this earth, then ones personal belief, would be; simply, to help each-other. Thank-you for helping with exploring ideas and permutations that may best work for a particular individual willing to invest the time and practice. Remember; D verses D; Distance verses Desire, The stronger your 'desire' to learn ones craft, the further 'distance' one will evidently go in it. Doing something for the right reasons will 'concentrate' and steel ones focus and resolve; however being motivated by the wrong reasons will bring a 'diluted' exposure that will not endure. Respect Always

Hello, I have one question regarding the first push - pull technique that you show with our left hand. When you push the stick at around 9:45 forward, with what part of the stick tip makes contact with the drumhead / practice pad ? When I try it, it seems to me that ( since it seems to be kinf of a sideway movement ) the tip makes contact with the playing surface with it's left downfacing surface in a nearly 45 degree angle. I hope I could describe it at least a bit understandable ;-) . ...and while playing like this the stick seems to "get stuck" a little bit, especially when trying it on a rubber practice pad., so quite some energy seems to be lost. I´m I right when I say that you straighten your pointer and middle finger when doing the push motion and turn your wrist in a sideway-down-motion, so that the tip hits the practive pad at a ca. 45 degree angle ? It'd be nice If you'd help me out with this one. Sorry for my English, but since it's not my mother tongue there may be some mistakes but I hope I could explain my issue so far. Greetings...
@ReubenSpyker7 жыл бұрын
Avaloctus Thank you for your question! I'm not quite sure what you are asking. The same part of the tip hits the pad just like any other stroke. If you are losing power or momentum you might have to losen your grip a little and really work on letting some rebound happen :) Sorry if it's too brief, hope it helped! If there is a problem you can pin point a little more I can maybe help more with that! Cheers!
@Avaloctus7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answering that quick. What I meant or asked,...in a short way,...you are coming down on the playing surface with you stick at an angle around 45 degree, don't you. Since it's a sideway motion of the wrist or in other words you turn your whole wrist and maybe your forearm " around itself in the first push motion ( look at 9:51 ) and then hitting the playing surface out of that motion with the stick.... You are not doin' the first stroke (push) in a 12 to 6 manner ( meaning from the 12 o' clock to the 6 o' lock postion ). That's what you do in the second part of the video where you demonstrate the next push pull technique. I´ll have a look at the video again for a few times and....hopefully I get it. Maybe it's just the tunring of the whole wrist when executing the firtst push motion that I´m just not used to and it takes some time to get it ;-) Thanks again, for answering that quickly. ' wish you a relaxed sunday.....greetings
@ReubenSpyker7 жыл бұрын
Avaloctus Hey no worries, so I am turning my fore arm and bringing my fingers in to winde up first. Then the push stroke comes from turning your fore arm to the right and pushing your fingers out to let the stick strike the surface. Then for the second stroke pull your fingers in and turn your fore arm back to the starting position. cheers :)

Hey Reuben, first of all a big compliment to your channel. The material you provide is just great, while you seem to be a really nice guy also! So here is my story: I think i stumbled across your technique video three month ago and have since then, been constantly practicing all of that technique stuff (again). Most of it works out quite well and me overall technique seems improved. Only that push-pull left hand really bothers me. It just doesn't benefit me and i'm still a lot quicker using my naturally grown technique.. So how did you approch this? Are you really trying to incorparate that technique while playing freely? Or is it more a thing of pure technique pratice and then waiting for the technique to take over naturally? How long did it take for you to really feel the benefits of all that practice? Cheers, Malte
@ReubenSpyker7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for the kind words! :) These techniques take quite a while to get down but once you do it feels great! I don't really remember how long they took me. I remember learning about the basic push pull from an old Jojo clinic vid from the 90's. And then after that I slowly chipped away at it. It probably took me over a year to get it down. But learning the other ones happened a lot faster after that. As far as application, once it becomes comfortable enough it will seep into your playing. Just like if you practice moeller technique and try to build a groove around technique, it will feel very awkward and won't sound good because you will be over thinking it and you won't have any musical thought put in it. But if you practice moeller or push pull to the point of being comfortable with them, they should naturally turn into the way you move the sticks. Which is all it is, just another way to move the sticks. You also said---"It just doesn't benefit me and i'm still a lot quicker using my naturally grown technique.." That is totally fine! If you are already comfortable moving the sticks in your own way and are not limited by sound, speed or pain then you don't need to change anything! Cheers! :)

Thank you for your in detail reply!! :) I guess i'll just have to carry on experimenting with snare angles and keep practicing this stuff over and over. By looking at guys like Morello or Rich you can obviously tell, that there has to be something (magic) to it. So i won't give up for now.. Ahhh, the push-pull - it's the hardest.. but someday.. :D Keep drumming and all the best for your new Drumeo job!! Malte
@ReubenSpyker7 жыл бұрын
No problem! :) Thank you for stoping by! Never give up, it will work someday. Thats what I had to tell myself when I started learning it. Just had to chip away at it little by little everyday. And eventually it slowly got more comfortable. Had I given up and just said "this is too hard or impossible" I would still be where I started. Always picture the end result and never tell yourself you can't do it! Fake your brain into thinking you can do it and eventually it will work. Cheers! Thank you! I start the Drumeo job on Monday!!! :D

Great vid, Reuben! With the push/pull, is it a matter of gradually increasing your speed day by day, or is there a trick that, at some point, clicks and you just get? Right now I'm consciously opening and closing my fingers each stroke and am stuck at 200 bpm eighth notes on my right hand, but I'm wondering if I'm just not feeling it right.
@ReubenSpyker7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yes it is something you gradually increase little by little. You need to start out slow for sure to get the feeling and proper motions happening. And yes once you get comfortable with the motions it sorta clicks and you can consistently do it.But I also feel like to get faster you can take away the metronome. Its just that little mental thing that will prevent you from going further cause you will think "oh its not right, my timing is off" And then you won't go past that speed cause you think its wrong. So if you take it away you can feel more free to make mistakes and try get faster. But always come back to the metronome once you get a little more comfortable with the new top speed so you can keep it consistent and in time. Cheers!
@cpizz997 жыл бұрын
Thanks, man. That's really helpful. When I'm practicing the push/pull, I sometimes think it's starting to feel a bit like a gravity blast without the aid of the rim, but as soon as I notice that it goes away. Is that what it feels like when it clicks? Curious if I should aim to capture that gravity blast feel, or if I'm imagining that and need to just work on increasing my speed gradually.
@ReubenSpyker7 жыл бұрын
No problem :) The gravity blast and this have pretty different movements and motions that use different muscles. But basically if you are getting the speed and power that you are looking for, then any sort of feeling works! :) If anything starts to feel like its helping stay on that path! And if later it turns out not work too well you can always try going the other way afterwords! These things always take a lot of trial and error. Cheers!

NO problem :) Just the basic push pull was maybe 4-5 months to a year? (don't quite remember the timeline). I first saw it on Jojos DVD but it wasn't till quite a bit later that i went back to learn it! I wanted to get all the other things like Moeller down first! But when you get one down, the other ones will come along a lot faster! Cheers!

I've watched this again...I think with the right handed push pull technique in the first method you add part of the second thumb method as you speed up...it seems to me that the push pull doesn't get you to the speed until your thumb adds a little more from what you call the second technique. This is not a criticism, I'm only trying to figure out why I'm not getting there by being too strict about following your instruction. It's almost, to me, that you have to take some of this guidance and find your own way by feel...but you certainly have mastered it, and I know from experience how difficult it is to teach mechanics, I appreciate you giving away your secrets and I hope I can repay you with thanks.

Hey no problem :) The second one with the thumb will give you more speed but the first one definitely gives you more power!

I had the JoJo Mayer DVDs for a while and this is the closest that I have seen on KZbin. without the flamboyant Hollywood backdrop , you are presenting this wrong and with perfection. for KZbin presenters , need to watch this and see that all the unnecessary backdrop it's definitely not necessary. especially, when you don't know what you're doing. Young man, you got it together. Keep it up!!

somehow my computer says you are presenting this wrong. that is a typo. you are presenting this in a very significant and in a breathtaking way. excuse the typos. The system will not let me take it out
