In a reply to someone saying that the belt sander was a tool not needed in a WW shop, I referenced you and your videos. Evidently they were not impressed with someone who were excellent at using the belt sander. Any tool can be misused or dangerous, it just takes practice and effort.

I find it to be an overall misconception…”belt sanders are for rough work” or “belt sanders can ruin the workpiece”, etc. Sure, that can be true but so can the opposite. I can’t imagine NOT having a belt sander in my shop! Much thanks.

I reference Frank Klausz. His dovetail videos and DVDS. He whips out the belt sander to smooth out the small extended parts of the tails and pins so they’re perfectly flush.

Ramon, I'm with you , the belt sander is another valuable tool in the shop. Like all tools if you aren't comfortable with them Don't use them ! All tools can be misused and abused. It seems that people think they can master everything right out of the box, truth is that most of them use them once, have a bad experience or have heard about someone else with a bad time and never use them again. I'm a believer that the tool doesn't make the man, learn to use it properly and comfortably and they will become your friend. Great tips as always and thanks for sharing.

That is very well said. I wish I had thought of saying something like that. We tend to reiterate or even propagate information as though it’s fact. A well tuned belt sander (with a little experience) can be a massive asset in the shop. Thanks a ton for your input

Another fantastic video, Ramon. You have motivated me to use my belt sander more and I'm much more comfortable with it than when I first started. It is the best tool for so many applications. I love your training wheels comment 😃 Keep up the great work!!

I love the curly cherry in that panel, it looks great. I need to up my game as my standards for shop furniture are much lower than yours. I need to drill some holes in my blade storage drawers to make it easier to remove the blades. Steve

Makita 4" is the one and only! Been using 45 years. Even better with graphite canvas on the platen.

Love your videos, Ramon! Any suggestions on a preferred belt sander? I have a Craftsman professional series 4x24 that is probably from the 90s/00s that struggle with - doesn't have great balance and seems to leave a less flat surface than what I typically start with. If memory serves, the Makita's you show are models that are no longer available.....I'd love to hear your suggestions! Thanks!

Thank you! I have four Makita 9401’s. Besides my oldest one, the others have been purchased used off of eBay. And two of em were nearly new! Be patient and keep checking back…they’re out there. The 9401 is superbly balanced, low center of gravity and a workhorse! I also change the factory, thin metal plate & cork. It’s not a good design. I use a graphite pad instead. In this video I share more about this. Belt Sander Techniques kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYGzin-thd96i5Y I have other belt sander vids on my channel…I kinda have a thing for em! 🤪 Cheers

Ha! Just last week James Hamilton did a video "banning" the belt sander. I'm with you.
@ramonartful2 ай бұрын
Good for you! And yeah, I recently saw that. People that ban the belt sander don’t know how to use it 🤪
@eggsngritstn2 ай бұрын
@ Heh, that’s actually his point. Being such an aggressive sander, you can really mess things up if you don’t pay attention to the details.
