The Ramones drew a lot of inspiration from 40/50s do-wop and 60s surf rock. They had a fresh sound and, with Lou Reed and others, were at the forefront of modern Punk.

The Ramones had many influences, including The Beatles, Elvis Presley and The Beach Boys. They took those sounds and sped them up and made the music move faster, hence 2 1/2 or 3 minute songs, with simple lyrics. They were better musicians than many punk bands, got to see them four times over the years, only the drummers changed. Johnny, DeeDee and Joey were always there. Here are a few to try: Rock and Roll High School, Cretin Hop, Pinhead, We're A Happy Family, Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio? and Lobotomy. Go.

U got it right... The Ramones liked the music of the 50's and 60's rock & pop... stuff like The Beatles, Beach Boys, Buddy Holly... short, simple & memorable songs. When the 70's scene came along, Led Zeppelin w/ their 'extended' songs and complex arrangements were in popular demand... so u had artists like Uriah Heep, Yes, Deep Purple, early Genesis, E.L.P. etc... and The Ramones hated that approach. They wanted a return to those simple, catchy tunes... and since they could not emulate Jimmy Page or John Bonham... they played their instruments w/ only the basic skills and tried to emulate that old sound that they loved... That's how u got short, punchy songs like 'Sheena is a punk rocker'... 'Judy is a punk'... 'Blitzkrieg bop'... etc... But in 1977, the public at large hated that sound in the disco era. However, in the UK and Europe, their sound started a revolution and created the punk rock scene there.

Another great reaction. And yeah Lex, you nailed it about dropping the consonants off at the end of the phrases. One thing you have to keep in mind if you imagine being at one of their shows is that they were definitely loud. They were extremely loud you could feel it punching through your chest in your body on the low-end and on the upper end your ears with ring for three days afterwards. What's up may have a cheerful Vibe but it definitely punched you and your gut in your face at the same time and it did it to a whole bunch of people at once and people just went nuts dancing. Actually open for them once in Chicago and it was incredibly loud and we all loved it.

PUNK ROCK in the 1970's and 80's was a movement in Music. Kids were fed up with Music like disco and 10 to 20 minute + songs. They were 2 to 3 minute songs that kids could start a band and play Music and get their aggression out from school, their parents or all the things that kids didn't like, or thought they didn't need, like a job or a career they just wanted to have FUN and be a kid until you needed to settle down. So bands like The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Cramps, The Dead Milkmen, The Stooges, The Damned, The Buzzcocks, The Dead Boys, The New York Dolls Television and so many more. IT WAS A FUN TIME!!!! Some of the bands became F'n Good Also ♥

Lol! I never thought of that. Ramones do sound like The Beach Boys on steroids. Happy sounding punk. It's like Weezer is too for alternative rock. Happy sounding grungy alt rock. Maybe the surf rock style music, melodic doo wop style singing. Just like the Beach Boys. Punk rock, hardcore thrash, and hip hop and other music are music skaters like to skate to. Or surfing on surfboards as well for that matter! Punk kind of has old rockabilly roots from the '50s and '60s. Elvis Pressley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, etc. The the garage rock/proto punk roots of the '60s/'70s like MC5, Velvet Underground, The Stooges (Iggy Pop), etc. Yall have heard Ramones at sporting events, tv, etc. Brad. Did you react, to The Rivieras - "California Sun"? A lot of "surf type" guitar tone, and twang maybe? The Ramones, really brought back that quick 2 minute song, and the spirit, and immediacy, of Rock & Roll. Their name, comes from Paul McCartney's stage name, "Ramone", he used, back in the day. Someone mentioned, that it was their way of thanking The Beatles, for saving Rock & Roll, from artists that were watering it down, like Pat Boone, and Bobby Vee. As prog was about progressing, this was about regressing, and stripping away all of the trappings, to lay bare the essence of Rock & Roll. Prog, is a fine aged wine. It will attract, those wanting subtleties, in sound. Meditative, inner movement. Punk, is a straight whiskey. It will attract, those wanting raw amp, and a sharp blow to the ear. Jolting, outer movement.

Punk is much more polylithic genre-wise than it has been projected. There are so many different types. One band Metallica idolized were The Misfits, whose tempo changes, styles and lyrics are a more primitive, less technical version of what you hear in Metallica's music. Since The Misfits are renowned for being the original and quintessential "horror punk" band, it's easy to see how Metallica's music and themes are derivative of those found in the music of the Misfits. You could also find that Metallica's style was heavily influenced by the rise of 80's British hardcore punk bands like GBH, Exploited and the UK Subs.
