Cranidos and Shieldon are super cute! Then they evolve.
...But what all came together to make these dinosaur Pokemon designs what they are? With the gen 4 remakes Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl right around the corner, let's take a look at the gen 4 fossil Pokemon, and delve into their etymology and biology and all the stuff we usually do! Also, in classic Lockstin fashion, I mispronounce a lot of stuff!
How about that new Pokemon Fossil Exhibit in Japan? I must be psychic.

There are tree's and shrubs in the Pokémon world too. In the anime AND games. The tall grass, the trees we can't get through, the berries, etc. And in the games, even towns and cities only have a few buildings, so the lack of different kinds of plants can be excused. Also, if you've noticed in sword and shield specifically with the isle of armour dlc, there's way more types of plant life, with the different coloured plants and different trees. ALSO also, if you've noticed the trailer for legends: arceus, the trees are different now (And the textures are not so bad). So I think that's enough proof that there are normal plants.

That is the general concept with those two. Rampardos is pretty much Marvel's Juggernaut if he was a dinosaur. Once Rampardos gets going there is only really two things that stops it. Bastiodon and several force fields, everything else literally gets pulverized.

Fun fact, the Rampardos and Bastiodon line are based on dinosaurs that were closely related to each other, since both Ceratopsians and Pachycephalosaurids were in the clade Marginocephalia. Also, Rampardos looks more like a Stygimoloch given the presence of the horns and the dome, but since Stygimoloch may also be an ontogenic stage of Pachycephalosaurus...

I love fossil Pokémon, my favourite is Armaldo. It's surprisingly profund (or it possibily is), and a general mixture of everything Paleozoic in just one creature, the armor, the land-walking, the pseudoreptilian feathures and just about everything does reference the Paleozoic in some manner. It's kinda like Aerodactyl with pop culture dinosaurs but to Paleozoic creatures.

Dracorex Hogwartsia was a more recent discovery, after the original Diamond/Pearl. Instead, I would like to direct your attention to Stygimoloch Spinifer for Rampardos. Also, Bastiodon is an all time favorite of mine.

Fun fact: In the novel version of The Lost World we don’t see the Pachy’s headbutt. When one of the characters asks another gor advice when they have to get close to a heard, said character admits that while they have speculations to how the Pachy’s might have used their heads in the end of the day they DON’T really know how the heads are used. They still advise the other character to be cautious however, because while they might not know the reason fir the thick heads they DO know they have them for a REASON.

_Protoceratops_ wasn’t that early of a ceratopsian. The oldest ceratopsian appeared in the late Jurassic and _Protoceratops_ was in the late Cretaceous. Nothing wrong with this, though, it’s a bit older than more famous ceratopsian.

Rampardos' name probably also pulls from the word Rampage. Which is fitting since it's the offensive/aggressive of the two fossilmon. I'd also hazard a guess and say that the theme for these two pokemon is probably the unstoppable force vs the immovable object which is where i thought the Rampardos on a Skateboard intro was going.

1. The whole “Dracorex is a juvenile Stygimoloch” thing came from the same guy (Jack Horner) who thought T-Rex couldn’t hunt and only scavenged. 2. Dimetrodon was not a dinosaur, it was a synapsid 3, Shieldon is absolutely adorable and I want one 4. This video was very fun and I liked it

There was a talk on Pachycephalosaurus/Dracorex/Stygimoloch at a paleontology conference a few years back, though I don't think the work is published yet. Aside from being at different stages of maturity, the three "species" also come from distinct layers in the rock, thus slightly different time periods. The three might, instead of a growth series, represent an example of microevolution!

Love Dinosaurs. Yet to see Game Freak do anything worthy of those mighty ancient creatures. Rampardos is a throwaway project- I used it to pass on Head Smash onto an Aggron offspring with the right IV's AND the ability Rock head. Head smash+ no recoil damage ❤

1. Pachycephalosaurus is a genus. The family is called Pachycephalosauridae. 2. Dracorex is considered a young Pachycephalosaurus. Though based on the raised dome and prominent spikes, it most likely pulling from the older phase that was formerly known as Stygimoloch. 3. Funny enough, the idea of running down prey through headbutting is a thing. ...Kinda. The strategy is proposed as something possibly done by Carnotaurus - a carnivore from Argentina known for its bull-like horns. 4. Protoceratops and its relatives weren't early animals. They lived in Mongolia around 75 million years ago and, while somewhat basal, weren't like the ancestral forms. The earliest Ceratopsians arrived in the Middle Jurassic period.
