A brief recap of the C-shaped punch from karate and taekwondo. It’s not two moves at once, it’s one move. I use it to set her off the centerline and set up a head kick.

Hi Ramsey, I've done Karate for around 33 years now, and yes... Most of it is useless. However, this double punch technique... Isn't actually a double punch at all. It's a throw. You'll see in most kata with this technique it's done with a step in or sometimes even a small leg sweep. You're grabbing in 2 places : collar height and waist height. The collar height arm is pushing to create kuzushi, and the waist height arm is pulling or even just anchoring. Your lead leg is sweeping or stepping behind ( like o Soto gari). The goal is to take the head past the point of balance ( the hips) and follow/direct it into the ground. Hard. It's not the most practical throw ( without some modifications) but works if you can get outside your opponent's leading arm, and then grab behind the shoulder and at the waist, and push/pull as you sweep their lead leg.

Sometimes it is actually a punch. See the Parker Kenpo technique "Destructive Twins" where it is undeniably a disrupting strike that sets up the position needed for the next move. At most you could argue it's a push to start off a striking technique. It's definitely not a throw. But in plenty of other places, it is a throw or grab of some sort.

I practiced Goju Ryu from fourteen up till my late twenties. I was taught that most of the "double punch" kata applications were block and punch simultaneously (one hand blocks and the other punched), used as a counter. The second hand was a redundancy measure. Funny enough, I utilize the double punch several times as a rouse or faint, since my opponent pauses for a bit wondering WTF I was intended to do.
@TheWesterlyWarlock

As a Goju-ka, I want to agree, but I also want to point out that in Gekisai Dai Ichi, this double punch thing is more representative of a jiu-jitsu technique combined with a striking technique. Goju-Ryu, being a "soft-hard" form combines "soft" techniques (grappling) with "hard" techniques (striking) and so one has to have a basic understanding of jiu-jitsu to recognize what some of these techniques are. In many of these double-palm or double-fist techniques, the implication is to grab the opponent by the folds in their gi, manipulate their movement into you, and then use the stopping force of your strike to inflict maximum damage to vital areas such as groin and sternum (as in Gekisai Dai Ni) or center of mass (as in Gekisai Dai Ichi). However, the one in Seipai is definitely more like what you're talking about. Edit: hit send before I was done

Whether it is very good % wise I won't comment, but double punches of various sorts can have plenty of power. That guy is just crap at them and doesn't know or understand how to generate the power. It's not an "arm punch", you generate the power with your legs and body, not your arms. The power generation is quite different to a normal punch so it can take some effort to learn, but being bad at something isn't the same as that something inherently having "no power". I agree though that lots of people are very bad at this technique, so in most cases it does have no power. But again, it's because people are bad at it and are usually doing it wrong. Edit: ok I tried to find a video of someone doing it well and I failed. So ok if we judge by the standard at which it is performed on KZbin it's a total write-off.

Google AI is an impressive thing. I actually enjoy talking advanced AI into knots. Not a fan of it. It has alot of good potential, but so do people. Anyways, sorry I get a bit distracted. With that, KZbin has been pouring alot of stand up content into my feed. One came coincidentally. I'm subscribed to the channel English martial arts. Mainly for his catch wrestling bits. Like any modern day grappler, my original grappling art of sambo really cannot be called pure sambo now because it's now a bit of bjj, catch wrestling, and even bits from rare unknowns that have a gem or two that work well for me. Anyways, the guy on English martial arts just posted a short on the importance of stand up grappling, and how so many are lacking, and seem to be losing this aspect. Most combat starts on the feet, so why is it that so many arts don't put emphasis on keeping their balance and defending takedowns, including striking arts. This is why I believe Sanda is the most underrated fighting art to date. Love Sanda rules and tactics. I also get a bit of a chuckle out of these alphabet ranking martial arts tests for self defense some youtubers make, yet dont include Sanda. If a person can strike and grapple standing up until they can get away... and it's not only practiced like wwe scripted wrestling like Krav maga is, where someone could forget their part, or something unexpected could happen, well than I'd say Sanda makes alot of sense. Not sure if you care for that question, but I do have one I'm certain a few of us are curious about, but I don't think anyone's asked yet. What are your thoughts on Fury and Ngannou on Oct 28th? I don't bet money, but I bet a buddy of mine that Fury has it in a hat. Reason why is because iv walked into judo clubs, and boxing gyms, and even though some seniour guy there of 20 plus years looks out of shape and burnt out. They still rock you beyond what you'd ever think. Experience, and ability can hide well behind the body. Ngannou is gifted, but I'd say he only has a %20 chance of winning. That low, and thats it. Curious of your thoughts on it if you'd like to share.

Double-punch *could* be used as a setup to a high kick. But it looks like pro fighters have been using setups that do a better job of keeping your head off line or further away from danger. Example: Stephen Thompson. Another example: Justin Gaethje versus Dustin Poirier. Another possible example: Leon Edwards versus Kumaru Usman.

As with many karate techniques in katas, the morote tzuki actually has several interpretations. Many karate techniques have roots in Tegumi (Okinawan wrestling). It could very well be the case for the morote tzuki, which would then refer to a takedown rather than a double punch. Instead of punching, try to grab the opponent's gi, and then do the movement. Try to experiment with the momentum of the move, in order to take the opponent down. Hope this helps. 🙏 remember, kata are stylised techniques and unfortunately, its original meaning has often been lost in time.

@Tr8nt the concept of a kata is actually quite common in pretty much all martial arts. When a boxer trains shadowboxing to learn/memorise a certain pattern of punches and repeats this over and over again until it becomes second nature, this pattern of movements is technically a kata. Katas remain relevant in karate for the same reason. The only difference is that many of them predate even karate themselves, some come from 19th century white-crane kung-fu. By decades long transmission, the actual meaning of the movement became less clear or even lost. The movement itself is relevant, but it's the "why" of the movement which is sometimes a guess work. The oldest written manuscript for what we call the "bunkai" (=the application of the kata) is a book called the Bubishi. This treasure of content gives an idea of many of the movements original meaning. Hope this explanation helps. 🙏

Iain Abernethy of Practical Bunkai has it nailed I think when it comes to what was likely the original intent of Mountain Punch / Yama Tsuki / 山突き or Santeul Jireugi / 산틀 지르기 - a “block” is a lock is a strike is a throw. Outside of being cheeky in a friendly bit of kickboxing sparring it’s likely that it’s a grapple or counter grapple.

I've always liked the explanation that the double punch is actually a leg grab plus a punch. Bottom arm catches a kick (easier said than done in all honesty) and the top arm delivers a counter punch. Though, all kata and taolu are up for interpretation - never one concrete answer.

My friend uses a long guard, and when he places punches, it's not really to do damage, but to make you react, he has good strike placement. One thing he will do however is give you more of a shove than anything with some of the strikes. It's pretty rare seeing someone push low at the hips. Dangerous for one, leaves a person pretty vulnerable, but if done when the opponent has bad footing and posture, there could really be a takedown out of it. I'm certain there's something similar, can't think of the name of it, but what I mean is essentially bracing and shielding with the left arm, while also trying to off-balance, while also picking at the leg with the other hand. Literally basically what Ramsey did in his last video is they have gi pants on.... coincidence. I'm going to try this out next time. Even if it doesn't result in a take down, once you pick that leg, and it's controlled, all you need is a push into that leg and a foot sweep. Than, depending how they land, you can fall back into a knee bar. My buddy thinks he's got moves and set up for knee bars from standing. I'll show him! *as he reads this and practices it before me.*

That double punch is actually one of my highest percentage techniques, I land it all the time in sparring. You frame on their lead arm with your low arm, to set up a pinch with the high arm; it's especially useful to help you get offline to land it. There's also an open handed version which has the same frame but instead of punching with the rear arm you push on their tricep to create space. It appears in a lot of monkey steals peach videos, as well as the karate nerd's video on seisan.

There’s tons of stuff that works well in sparring, that gets you knocked out in a fight. When I go light in sparring sessions, people land quite a few weird punches with no power on me. But if I were to actually try to land any of mine with a little more power, they’d switch up their tactics a lot. As would I against them if they threw a little harder. Yes this correct just to confirm, it's actually the top one that's a block and then you punch underneath to the stomach, when I see some peoples' interpretations of kata bunkai I really have to stop myself from being an autistic sperg online and getting into an several hour argument with people about it because it's just not worth it lol since you know they're not interested in a real argument anyway. Ramsey's usage of it is interesting though for sure and attacks like that do work, it's less that you're necessarily doing them at the same time in a real fight but more you're doing it in really quick succession as opposed to the 'one block one punch' beginner basics and that's something that lately my instructors have been trying to drill into us to use more advanced karate in sparring. It's amazing watching people who should be so much better than me throwing these techniques out so vaguely and having zero power behind them. Hey Ramsey if you really want to get your sparring partners to hate you focus on feints and quick sucessive block/attacks for awhile and show it to people on the channel because my instructors do that really well and it's a nightmare to deal with LOL.

@@rohitchaoji This is technically true as well though I don't know about this technique specifically, however when you look at a lot of traditional kata out there they are in fact meant to be done with weapons in their more advanced forms, for instance I do know that in Shotokan you actually perform these kata's with Tonfa or Sai and then all of a sudden it makes a ton of sense and looks really practical. To a degree there's even staff techniques hidden away in there as well as plenty of throws and grapples. This is why I have to contain my autistic screeching when I see people rambling online about how karate 'doesn't work' because I think 'Yeah of course it doesn't work, because you're not using it correctly' but people won't be told because they want to think they can be experts in something after practicing a style for 5 years and trying to use it in MMA. Just went super saiyan Vegeta style! In all seriousness, that does work, and yes, it doesnt do any damage, its just very annoying. A buddy of mine will constantly jump in to do a double punch whenever he can, and everyone hates it. If its not exactly at the same time, itll be a quick one two. He proudly says he created a combo thats directly out of a Tekken game. Its not bad, but so ridiculous. Most sparring sessions start with someone jabbing, as we all know. Well he just completely takes that into the strangest realm of martial arts right from the beginning. Hel duck low under the jab. And do 2 body shots, or his stinger attack thing, if it is a one two, he starts with a cross first, because than he comes back up with a spinning back elbow, even if he has to step back to do it. Its not a bad setup. Im all about giving up everyones moves up today. A few of us have discovered that one of the funnest parts of just being a hobbiest fighter is you get to try and master the craziest and dumbest moves, rather than always training the high percentile stuff constantly. Its always an awesome gag to when rolling with someone new and they discover your a master at the rarest and strangest throw or submission. No matter how crazy or odd a move seems, If a person practices it enough, it will become functional. Some, have more real ability than others, like the spinning hammerfist attack of death compared to say a jumping scissors kick. There was a actually a sambist from Kazakhstan that did incredibly well a couple of years ago, and got through every single opponenet using the same throw, and its one of those sambo throws you maybe try once and everyone in the class just knows they dont want to try do that again, but he was the strange guy that just went home and practiced it everyday for months, than one day he showed up at class and beat everyone with it over and over again, and for some odd reason everyone knew exactly what he was going to do, but no one could defend it. So there is a time when even those back of the book techniques can work for some people even at a pro level.

0:14 Ok Ramsey, I'm gonna comment of what he said about the kata. I'm pretty much an expert on traditional forms, so I'm gonna put in my two cents. The double punch is multi-functional, meaning that it has several applications. Actually ALL techniques from traditional forms have several applications, not just one. The most common use for the double punch is to gain a little distance from your opponent when he grabs you when you're minding your own business. You can follow up with whatever, depending on what the guys does next. It can be a shot to the temple, trachea, uppercut, double leg takedown and so on. This guy said it doesn't have a lot of power, but it's not meant to have a lot of power. It's used to set the guy up, like Ramsey following up with a kick, or to gain some distance if he's crowding you like I just said. The thug that grabbed you cannot stop it because his hands are already grabbing you, so it's true that the double punch will be unstoppable. His hands are already on you, and he's looking at you. It's perfect to follow up with an upper cut if the thug thinks he got an easy victim when he grabs him. Nice move with the kick following the double punch Ramsey, I had never seen that before! 👍💪

For Q and A with the Coach: Whenever I do any striking with other guys, I feel I have some subconscious inclination to strike for the body instead of the head. At first I thought I just had a legit problem of being afraid of hurting the person, but I don't think that's it, because I go 100% to the body, punches or kicks. Then my second idea was that it was a reflex because I was short, but guys I go against are usually my height or maybe 3 inches above at most. When I use the punching bag, I sometimes have to take a break to make a mental image of where the opponent's head really is, because I tend to punch lower than higher. Is this a natural reflex, because from what I see in some videos, people have the opposite problem and practically forget about body shots. And this might be a bit of a jump, but does the Kyokushin ruleset have anything to do with this (no head punches, kicks anywhere)? It just feels a lot more natural to me, and I wonder if I'm in the minority feeling this way.

@@IDRUSKI well, you should always have one hand next to your face whenever you throw a punch regardless. For you I’d recommend doing very light sparring drills and ask a partner who’s got good defense to just let you try some combos while he covers up. When I do light sparring and I get a long chain of hits in, I’ll usually cover up afterwards to let my partner try his own combination on me. Helps you learn both defense and offense and simulates being tired after throwing so many punches. Also I’d recommend practicing level changes within the same combo, I.e. Jab to the face, hook to the body, then uppercut to the face. Or whatever feels the best for you, I’m more of an infighter myself. Hope I can be of some help

Not exactly: watch in slow motion how everyone in those clips (including Jeff Chan) reacts to the double handed frame by reaching for both hands, exposing the head on both sides. You can then take your pick to kick him in the back of the head with the rear leg, or in the face with the lead, depending on the direction you slip with the digeutja-jireugi. Your set ups with this frame are also not limited to head kicks.

A local karate guy once showed us another interpretation of a movement that looks vaguely similar. He thought it was a pretty good way to destabilize the opponent, although I have no idea what follow-ups he had in mind. Worth noting that in that version your hands go to the shoulder and the opposite hip or so. Unfortunately, I am not qualified to make sense out of what I saw, and whether it was something he practiced, or it was a case of him theorising.

@@RamseyDewey we will soon have the online safety bill coming into force, so the UK too will be like somewhere else with all the censorship. At least for now, here we've been able to see both sides of that certain narrative. I think Gabriel Varga knows a lot about kata. He’s a 4th degree karate black belt. That being said, a lot of what is taught in kata is not striking and never comes into play in kickboxing. The C-shaped double punch is a fairly obscure move most people outside of competitive taekwondo never use. When I was competing in taekwondo it was a really common technique to create distance and set up head kicks. That was decades ago. With all the modern rule changes, you never see it anymore.
