Q&A with the Coach.
Christianity vs combat sports. How does a Christian reconcile “turn the other cheek” with hitting other people in a cage fight?
That popular saying taken from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5 is one of the most misunderstood and misappropriated verses in the Bible. “Turn the other cheek” doesn’t mean what you think it means!

As a Christian there's nothing I find more blasphemous than the "nice guy Jesus" doctrine. Jesus was anything but a nice guy. He was a disruptor. He was abrasive and verbally combative. He was culturally subversive to the point of getting crucified. He taught us to love our enemies and to pray for them so that they may be saved; not to befriend them, allow them into our home, and tolerate their sins.

Sometimes I feel convinced Jesus was a very educated man who brought back a mix of small-and-large vehicle Buddhism to his illiterate countrymen and their rigid cultural bosses. He seems to have seen himself as an avatar of Shiva, here to trample and burn. Some of his ideas, no matter how peaceful in content, were radical and corrosive to the order of the time.

I wasn't expecting a Bible study this morning, but enjoyed it. I recently found out that "meek" in "blessed are the meek" never meant to be a quiet, pushover. Instead the Greek word "praus" is better translated as slow to anger, and in control of your emotions (i.e. not rash).

Here's some trivia on Roman law at the time: - It was legal for a Roman soldier to strike someone once; but striking twice got them an assault charge. - It was legal for a Roman soldier to make someone carry their pack "one mile"; further wasn't legal. There are a LOT of Roman laws that get overlooked when interpreting the words of Jesus. His message was "use their own laws against them", because many Roman soldiers were abusive. But he also had a lot of compassion for the Roman soldiers, because he recognized not all of them were.

That's because it _wasn't_ what Jesus was saying. I like Ramsey, but his interpretation here is a common fallacy made by those who don't actually like Jesus's message. Remember, this is the same sermon where Jesus says "blessed are the meek". Not "blessed are the defiant". Consider also that Jesus lists _three_ examples to illustrate his point - Ramsey only mentions the one. The two others are far more difficult to misinterpret in the same manner.

Maybe because I never really saw it as saying "don't defend yourself or participate in combat sports." Ramsey's view of this scripture pretty much matches how I've always seen it: Jesus is just telling people to be badass. Overall, I think Jesus is pretty cool. I think it's important to remember that Jesus was not always a pacifist. He was simply very careful about which physical battles he fought. He was more concerned about protecting the innocent and the sacred than letting people walk all over him.

An elaborate answer would take too long and say to little... Let's just say that when hate saturates this world relating what you know with what you don't becomes nearly impossible. Thankfully I was able to meet God and he began teaching me the meaning and context in a way that I could have only learned through him. Simply put, bad trees produce bad fruit... up to that point that was all I knew. Since that point, though it causes me to be outcast by my fellow man, I know the difference now and am unwilling to concede myself to the standards of such a world (because I remember, personally, what awaits those binding themselves to that path... and I see that pain grow in them daily as they continue to justify such). I strongly believe that more than read (by far) the bible tells us to pray and to walk the walk more than to talk the talk or trust that our knowledge should come from man. PS: Jesus was never a pacifist, he was a peace seeker (if you want peace prepare for war, Jesus simply taught us that the greater war was not surrounding us but rather within us... every act was to that end). As the end times come we see this battle exude from within to surround us all, and this is why he comes back as a conquerer (yet he and his mission are unchanged, we are).

I knew you to be excellent years ago, but this is deep. Thank you for adding to my knowledge on this concept...I never tought about the Roman mental growth, only the legal consequences. More historical context: Each of the three sayings had legal consquences for Romans who did them, as you mention "explain to my commanding officer." A Roman could slap a noncitzen once but not twice, they could take a coat but not a shirt, and they could force a non-citzen to carry a load a "mile" but no more. Christians then would turn the other check to draw a second slap, when coat was taken they would continue to undress taking off their shirt and underwear, and when forced to carry a load they would not stop at a "mile" and then complain to all this Roman was forcing them to carry baggage like a slave. It would end up in Roman courts and the Romans figured out not to mess with these tricky Christians or they would get you into legal trouble. Third options?...like the Tripod of Truth? "You can't polarize Jesus man..." So awesome...

Hi Ramsey. Just dropping by to say that you inspire me. Not 100% sure what I mean by that but as a young guy you show me what it is to be a man, and I aspire to learn from you. I consider myself better for having taken many of your words to heart and this will continue. In a way, you remind of what the vikings considered to be a good man - an able warrior, but also a sage, musician, and father. I hope to emulate that in my own way. Hopefully that's not too cheesy or whatever. Thanks.

Ya great examples! I experienced one yesterday: my coworker was trying to accuse me of butting into someone else's business by asking our supervisor why this person was getting fired or released from work; he was saying " it is not my business and it is spreading rumors"; well I said on to him "why not ask about the reason why he's being fired: it would be useful so that I won't do what he did and; get fired also." And my coworker's eyes soften up and his aggression went down and he said " HAAH GREAT POINT": in doing so he sat at his work station with a thoughtful look and we continued our work

Some big, strong guy walks to Jesus, says mean things about him and smash his face with the hardest haymaker you can imagine. Jesus being knocked down. He stands up. And he didn't beg for mercy he just pointed the other side of his face and said calmly: you missed this one. And everybody is be like, okay, it seems like no human can imitate the son of God. There are a couple other scriptures that back up what you're saying here, Coach Dewey. A buddy of mine is a Greek that understands and reads both modern and ancient Greek and has read me the Septuagint version of the New Testament, and in regards to Matthew 21:12-17, when Jesus cleanses the temple, that den of thieves didn't just walk out on their own, he had to get physical and toss them out. In the Septuagint, it reads almost like a Bruce Lee movie. Another scripture to back that up is from the Old Testament, in Nehemiah 4:17, when they were rebuilding the wall. They were told to build with one hand while carrying a weapon in the other. They were prepared to fight and die if necessary to preserve their lives and the work they were doing. We also have Genesis chapter 32 where Jacob wrestles with the angle of the Lord. Great post!

I was texting a group of people about your video, link included, and it ended up developing into something I would like to share with you Ramsey because I feel it is very important I address just how and why this video matters to me so much... Myself: "I really liked this video. When I choose to discuss controversial issues I'm not trying to be controversial, but rather put an end to the controversy by exploring what is commonly left unexplored out of fear. For nearly my whole life (as an abused child and subsequently ridiculed adult) I have always had issue with certain lessons of Jesus and they had driven a wedge between me and my savior. When truth is challenged by the difficulties of this life it is important to understand why real truth is not conditional (that we may apply ourselves to it) otherwise our faith becomes as suspectable to harm as a house on the sand (without foundation). I think this video did a good job of showing and explaining that phenomenon." Reply: "The one thing you have to know is why Jesus came! And that's all. He came to give us a way to the Father and eternal life! Read John 1:1 through 1: 18 and it explains everything!" My reply: "To any reading this, know that I do not find myself in conflict with brother *name* rather he comes from a largely respectable family where as I do not therefore I feel passionately something a little different than he (stated below)... How does a child that has killed themselves in their own heart at the age of four accept the light of Christ when they have known only darkness?... We can simply say that's the way it is because it just is with callousness, but to that child this shows only more darkness. Matthew Chapter 7: "16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." Either there are exceptions to the gospel or no exceptions, if we are to keep the masses safe that others be left to suffer then there is exception to the gospel. However, the gospel is without exception as is Christ's love for each and every one of us. Being able to relate this to those that have been tossed to the side is of utmost importance to us as Christians, if not then we bring unto those lost sheep bad fruit in the name of our savior as if to say we are not to be trusted or they are not to be loved in the eyes of God. "7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? 12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. 13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." What are we to those children that were born into families in which bread was asked for by the child and the parent gave unto them stones??? I have said long that the thing I find most lacking of all churches are that they fail to acknowledge how trauma alters the way we perceive things (especially when it occurs as a child). Trauma being the perception of division threatening the reality of unity. We must be willing and able to conquer this threat, and reestablish the truth of unity between each other with the truth God has given us in it's entirety (without exception)." I don't believe that there should be a change to the way the masses are taught necessarily, as it is easier when people feel good to do good and difficult for those that feel bad to do good. However, to ignore those feeling bad (especially as it pertains to their relationship with God and our fellow Christians) is definitely bad. I firmly believe each church should have classes provided to those suffering from intense psychological trauma, that there be more given and a place to take in for those that have been abused and neglected so they might actually realize how to properly apply the gospel rather than exempting it from themselves or themselves from it because no one is willing to go into those subjects troubling them enough to explain it to them properly and help them relate to it. Thank you so much for this video, it's a truly wonderful step towards accomplishing this goal in my opinion. :)

I'm not a Christian and most people who 'preach' on their non-religion based channel just succeed in turning me off their channel. However, you always offer genuine insight into life's challenges with a bit of history thrown in, and while you may use a specific religion (your religion) to illustrate your point, it's true on a much broader level because it's about people and living a good life not blindly following a particular Dogma. Thank you for your insight.
