My worst injury in football was not even on the field. I was in a summer weight program in So Cal. I didn't have much of a breakfast and I started dehydrated. Near the end of the session, we were outside doing lunges. I got that feeling that something was wrong but I wanted to press through to the end. I barely made it but now I had tunnel vision and it was closing down. I tried to alert the coach and only got a few words out before I collapsed on the concrete. I woke up in the gym a few minutes later. I was sore all over but luckily another player caught my head before it hit the ground.

@dondajulah41684 жыл бұрын
@@pizzulo81 I would be more concerned about the head shots by the big guy than that kick that knocked him to the floor. Ramsey needs to take it easy. Not a spring chicken anymore and harder to recover when you get older. Also not such a great idea to be pushing yourself when dehydrated like that. Blow to the head does more damage when the person is not hydrated. Just not a good idea to be taking on all comers when your body is not physically up for the task. Ramsey has too much to live for to be doing crazy s**t like that as his age.
@7dayspking4 жыл бұрын
@@pizzulo81 No it was a hit to the jaw. No getting smacked on the neck does not 'instantly' drop being unconscious unless it's the kind of hit that knocks them out by force which this was. The kick digged right in.

I've only been "rocked" or "dropped" twice. And I remember both reasonably well. I wasnt knocked unconscious at all. Both were kickboxing. the first one, I sparred a new guy and it was going well. He caught me, idr which punch, but I believe it was a straight punch. It didn't hurt at all, I dont remember feeling it. But I stumbled backwards and fell. There was a tire on the floor where the coaches were watching and I literally landed with my back against the tire like some anime scene. And shook my head to shake it off like, "oh, he got me." The second time, I hadnt really trained regularly at this time, but I came in on a few occasions. A couple guys had fights coming up, so the coach leading the class wanted to focus in them. So when we had our sparring, coach asked the guys not fighting to imply their opponents fighting style or stance. There were a few good productive rounds. This one round I sparred, I had to hold my right hand by my face(no prob) and the left one as a fist stretched out almost straight. I knew right away what was gona happen. But im a team player so I went with it. At one point, idr if I jabbed or reset the stance, but the guy I sparred came around my arm and got a straight right, almost a hook, right on my left cheek. I swear I felt the back of my head blow out. I stumbled backwards and collapsed. But managed to prevent the back of my head from hitting the mat. I remember being dazed. And i saw one of the pairs still sparring near us so in my dazed mind, I tried to move so I wasnt in their way. Lol. One of the other guys scooped me up and sat me in a chair. I sat there a bit to recover. And I remember considering if this was something I really wanted to do. And I remember thinking yes, I still wana do this. Cuz learning martial arts is fun. And I didn't totally die. Lol.

Coach Ramsey as a Martial artist I also respect your commentary on your teaching and sparring with your students. I also like your last statement on when sparring , everyone that spars should know the rules agreed upon When I was a young junior level taekwondo practitioner, I was always going hard with evenly matched training partners and my instructor. As I progressed in my martial arts career I began to understand the idea of respect and appreciation for fellow training partners and my instructors. Thus now whenever I train whether fellow student or instructor I'm able to focus more on learning technique and flow rather than domination and winning. At the end of the day it's better to lose in the gym during a friendly.traimimg session then not be able to defend oneself in a self defense situation. ✌🏿 Sir great commentary.

Hey Ramsey! I'm a 35 years old French Canadian (soon 36) and I just discovered your channel recently. I really love your calm energy and how honest and informative you are in your videos. I have done mostly Karate Shotokan in the past (I quit a bit before I could pass my exam for black belt) but have barely done any in the last 10 years. I did a tiny bit of boxing when I was 13 years old and had a few Jiu Jitsu techniques taught to me by one of the several Karate teachers I had back then (and checked out Karate Kyokushin and Tae Kwondo but didn't really get into those). Overall, I have always been interested in most martial arts. However, I have had 2 bad fighting match experiences when boxing as a teenager as I wasn't in my home town, I lacked some self confidence and the atmosphere was so negative that it sucked all of my energy before the matches even started. For this reason, I did not really watch combat sports and I only started really looking back into the different styles and MMA recently. Every teacher of every style I went to obviously was trying to say that their style was the best and other fighting styles were weak for X reason while I liked to try to take the best out of each. I am unfortunately realizing more and more lately how even the most practical aspect of Shotokan Karate really doesn't seem all that great in general compared to other styles like Muai Thai (I feel as if I have been duped into thinking I was a skilled fighter and that some of the techniques could work against an opponent with no or low martial arts training but that most of it would not work in a "real fight"). I am supposed to move soon and I want to get back in better shape. I am thinking about possibly taking some MMA classes but there are a few things that make me hesitate. I see that you sometimes answer some questions in your videos and some of those might have been asked already but I was wondering if you could shed some light on some of those. 1- Do you think that 36 years old is too old to start doing some MMA (even if I have a bit of martial arts background)? 2- I know that it is a risk with contact sports but is it almost for sure that if I were to try some competition, I would quickly end up with at least a broken nose (Karate Shotokan being semi-contact because of how "incredibly dangerous it would be in full contact as the teachers try to make us believe" ; ) doesn't have this issue). 3- Being a school teacher, do you think that if I were to train in MMA, there are good chances that I would come back to work in an "unpresentable" way after either some rough training or an occasional match and that it would be best for me to stay away from matches or go with a more traditional martial arts option? 4- I always felt like I had a good time in combat (more than with theory and katas) but a huge weakness I have always had is that I never was very flexible for someone who was close to a black belt. Is it still possible to greatly improve on this aspect even at my age (I don't think that I'm that old but I see many fighters retire in their 20s)? 5- I like how the martial arts I have done in general had a big sense of honor and respect which was completely thrown out the window in boxing matches and am I right to think that this level of respect also is not there in MMA or do a few cocky fighters just grab more media attention?

Never really trained much myself, only time I knocked someone out it felt like I was using 10% of the power I use on the bag, just reached out and touched their chin when they were moving forward. For average people, it certainly doesn't feel like power is what's important. Though for heavyweights with beefy necks I guess it probably is. Personally, I'm impressed you'd even considered sparring sessions in terms of hours, at any age, let alone yours.

I feel you brother I boxed and kickboxed in the early days of my youth. But not constantly over 1 year or so. Then i got some drug, family and relationship problems. But then when turned 23 i startet to think about martial arts again. Mostly because of bruce lee and his Philosophy behind it. I signed up in one of the most decorated and best gyms in my area. It was a lot of fun even if i nearly died at the training. Im a heavy smoker and i dont trained over years. I was completely out of shape. But i tried to find my way back. After a short time, maybe a week or two, i managed to train 2 training sessions, 1 hour mma and 1 hour luta livre. 3 times a week. My body was completely sore but i kept going. Then i had my first boxing lesson with an elite old shool russian trainer. He saw that i constantly hold my right hand down( im a southpaw). It triggered him somehow, maybe i looked cocky in his eyes but i dont know. In the middle of the training session he said we know have to do sparring. He called a guy, who wasnt training with us, and told him to spar against me. The guy was easily 10 kilos below my wheight. He whispered something in his ear. And i had no mouthguard with me. So the Round started, my right jab hand below my waist. And before the first exchange i told him im nearly new and had no.mouthgear so he should spar easy. He said its ok because he had no mouthgair too. Then he started to throw some power lever left hooks to my face. I told him to go easy but he kept coming with full force. After his second or third punch, i threw an check hook right before his punch was landing on my face. I slipped while i catched him. His fist neary glaced my face. He landed on the floor but directly got up. After that i thought he would go easy now. But he was pushing forward and forward, crushing my face with a left hook. I freezed, i couldnt punch anymore and just eate the punches. Then it happened. He cornered me. He trew a faint left hook while coming forward. I tried to escape to the left side. But hes angled himself right behind my right side. He nearly was behind my back. And when i tried to look back at him, i felt a hit and the lights went out, maybe a few seconds later my vision startet to open again. It was like turning an old tv on. I looked around and first i dont know where i was. I looked around, realised the gym, realised that i was in a ring and saw my sparring partner in the corner near the russian trainer. But the Incredible fact was that i was still standing. For a tiny second i got reaaly angry and wanted to let the hell fall upon him. But then i turned back into "human mode" throw 2-3 light shots, one if precise to his lip. He tried to catch me with his left hook again and again, but i timed it so can clich before he starts to punch. Slipped some uppercuts and the second round was over. The feeling was horrible, the russian trainer was smiling a little bit. I never visited his class again but maybe i should try it again. I turned 25 a few months ago. Had a long training stop because of University. I started to drink a lot of alcohol while college. I realised that i have to go on the path of an martial artist, to get a healthier lifestyle withouh drugs and alcohol. But i dont know what do know. Should i go back to the gym, and start to train mma, boxing and luta livre again, even when the goal of the gym is winning competition and fighting. Or should i search for another gyms, where the philosophy of martial arts matters. Maybe a chinese kung fu and sanchou gym? What would you recommend coach? I know only myself know the answer, but i just wanted to know your opinion. I like fighting and sparring, but not when the guys constantly try to kill each other. I think the technique evolves in moderate sparring, where you can conentrate on new skills and combos. Hard sparring is necessary at some points, but not constantly. Thats why i ask.you coach. Should i search for other gyms? Do you experienced something like that too? Edit: its the punches/ kicks that you dont see that will knock you out. So keep both hands up all the time even if you slip punches. And dont judge a book by its cover, small guys are as dangerous as giants Ousss
