MMA coach Ramsey Dewey narrates a pad holding session with a taekwondo instructor. In this pad session, we go over the basics of holding Muay Thai pads, and also demonstrate how to hold pads for more advanced TKD kicks like the spinning hook kick, axe kick, and tornado kick. And also how to integrate wrestling and clinch fighting into your padwork.

I can attest to pads hitting you in the face for round kicks. I was holding pads for a big dude who outweighed me by 100lbs (muscle and height) I held the pads in the air, he kicked, and I actually punched myself in the face with his kick and blacked out for a few seconds. I've sparred a hundred times; had 12 boxing matches, wrestled, had two Taekwondo tournaments and this was the only time I've ever been knocked out. Lol.

Ramsey! Thank you for another first rate video. It is readily apparent how training MMA specific drills (and sequences) is so much more to the point than mere isolated exercises. I found the "random" takedown shoots amidst the pad workout to illustrate quite nicely just how affectively one can utilize the time available in a given session. Your students are getting such a good deal in having you as their instructor (and coach). Pure respect.

There's also the problem with flashy pad holder. The pad holder actually bring the pads close to the strikes instead of moving and create a challenge for the other guy to practice, which resulted a very impressive multi hit combos training session but not very productive in the end

This is coming from a heavy boxing background when sparring with karate/muay-thai folks. The sidekick has been super-effective against me in sparring as a defensive tool. Often someone will fire the round-kick and it may miss or I'll dodge it, and immediately I begin moving in to pressure... but they'll recover by spinning through and follow-up with a sidekick as I'm coming in. I can't tell you how many times this exact scenario has played out in my sparring sessions.

Flashy kicks work. Oh they work. Im actually surprised nobody sees more in the ufc. In the ufc guys don't like taking too many chances however. In a real fight if you taga guy and make him wobble back a bit after a good punch or elbow, theres a very good chance that you can end the fight instantly with a hard spinning kick to either his torso or head. I only have become so soft id give him mercy most likely and never finish someone that way, depending on the situation, because a kick to the head is a terrible thing. Diiiinnnnnggggg.

Pad holding is my favorite training tool. And as I'm starting to develop coaching practices, I do try to vary the combos depending on the person's experience level. My coach used a similar combo to the kickboxing one you mentioned that I like. I haven't used it as the pad holder yet but it definitely works that low, high, left, right, out, in for kickboxing. I did this one combo where were in grapple(clinch) range and throw a small tight combo. It felt good as the holder and I eventually incorporated some clinch initiating move as well.

I’m brand new to combat sports and having a blast learning, but I’m curious: Do you think it’s beneficial for a complete newbie like me to spar during class when I still have very little technical skill and experience? My MMA classes usually end with a couple rounds of sparring and I understand that there’s a lot to be learned from watching my superiors, but I also feel like I may be ingraining bad habits in the heat of the moment? When is the ideal time to begin sparring?

As beginner myself, but with a few months of training, I'd say go for it, but preferably spar with someone who is accustomed to sparring with beginners, if you get to make that choice, that is. One of the mistakes I made as an absolute beginner was spar with other beginners due to being intimidated by the more advanced guys, but the end result would usually end up being sloppy and non-technical, with heavy punches and uncontrolled power, because both are feeling pressure and neither have the muscle memory to correctly execute the things we've learned. With more experienced sparring partners, they know how to correctly adjust their intensity in a way that will let you try out the techniques you have drilled and help you integrate what you've learned in sparring, while still giving you a taste of the pace of combat (and getting their own practice in). Just check how the sparring culture in your gym is like. Ideally, one shouldn't spar hard more than once a week and I'd say if you're a beginner and are doing it as just a hobby, won't be competing and don't like getting punched in the face (like myself), keep hard sparring to a minimal. Usually in a good gym, the better athletes are smarter with their sparring and keep it light and technical. They're usually safer than those who don't know how to control their power.

Hey Ramsey, youre prolly sick of getting questions about pads but why do most boxing padholders (the ones Ive been with at least) encourage you to hit the pads with full power most of the time? Ive even had one tell me to make every punch as if its a knockout punch. Shouldn't power be on the bags whereas pads are more on speed, accuracy, timing, flow, anything other than power? Also, hitting the pads with full power most of the time seems like a receipe for disaster for both the one holding and the one punching. Cheers Ramsey

Hello Ramsey, I have difficulties to get in to a good solid stance easily, and on youtube videos everybody says : "have your legs shoulder with apart and bend your knees, have this foot at 45° and the other at 20° etc.." but non of theese things does feel right when I do it, maybe because if you do something with out understanding it you maybe misunderstand things. I do alsow feel like the principles are more important than the exact details of the stance, and I end up getting in to a good stance automaticly when I move, but it's difficult for me to get in to a good stance on purpose. Do you have an advice to better my stance?

say coach i wanted to tell you a story, this event made an impression that i eventually learned something i have found very useful...and a thing i have noticed. has to do with what i call our safty filters , and a lesson on what happens when there are none. the safty naturally stops most normal humans mentally from using their true physical potential because the body isnt really meant for the stress right?........so when i was a child my mother worked at a state hospital called pennhurst..thats where people no one wanted went. sometimes i went with when no one could watch me. one time there was this guy in a wheelchair. he couldnt talk or move really, accept his right hand and forearm somewhat. well this place had roaches. his feet were on the floor and were bare. he could see them near his feet but could not move or ask for help. i saw this going down right..the aid came to see what his problem was didnt understand told him to be quiet and left. it happend a few more times...the aid came back totally pist, grabbed his chair hard...then he grabbed her fingers and nearly made em touch her elbow the wrong way. it took 3 men to get him to let go. as a child i couldnt believe what he had done, he appeared so weak. he couldnt even move his feet off the floor. was severely retarded was the term. that was my first lesson.
