People are saying they don't think this has a moral, so I figure i'd share my thoughts. Ramund doesn't actually care about gold or treasure. He's not someone who can be reasoned with. He's only looking to dominate others. The giant is someone who should have been a challenge to Ramund, but instead of standing up for the island and himself, he stood down proving himself to Ramund as someone who is weak and pitiable. As a result, Ramund took his life. If the giant had stood up for himself and the island even knowing he might lose, Ramund may have spared the giant's life and left the island alone, but because the giant showed that he lacked conviction, Ramund took his head. In short, stand up for yourself, or you might get stepped over like the giant.

Why I made this video was because I was really interested in seeing people's interpretation of the story, and what people would imagine the moral to be, or if they thought there was any. I think a lot of people were confused because it isn't how they would expect a story to be told today, so it was very interesting seeing the response and people's interpretation. You definitely got my understanding of it and nailed my intent with retelling it. Ramund isn't a hero, he is a story telling you not to reason with raiders, they are unreasonable.

I think there is also a second level to this. Ramund being able to do all this with nothing more than a fancy coat shows that you don't have to be strong, you just have to look like it. Hadn't Ramund worn his coat, the giant wouldn't have been that impressed by him and maybe delt with the situation differently. Someone in "peasant clothing" maybe wouldn't have been offered the treasures and maybe would have just been eaten.

This will probably be buried but here goes my interpretation: From what I’ve gathered about this channel it’s sort of a narrative therapy for adolescents, both thoughtfully written and extremely sublime in its approach. Ramund is a teenager. He wants fancy clothes (armor) to look cool (strong) and the queen (his mother) buys it for him. But he is not satisfied. So he complains and the queen thinks up something to pacify him (disguise, maybe as a nieche brand of clothes in a ‘you-don’t-know-about-it-cool’ way). Ramund’s crew (old and persumably wise people) hear the cracking of the boat and despair at what the future holds. But Ramund doesn’t care because nothing happens at that exact moment. It highlights Ramund’s naive optimism and near-sighted worldview. The giants might represent society at large or some sort of family that cares for him (because they cry) But Ramund is filled with youthful rage (stomping his feet) against the world and wants to tear it down. The giants refute violence even though they are capable of much more violence than Ramund (they are giants after all) and that gives Ramund the upper hand to take the giant (at this point I think it’s society that the giants represent) down and pillages whatever is left after they are all gone. He returns home full of pride because he thinks he had the right of might to destroy and pillage. Which is obviously wrong since Ramund is pretty dislikeable in his actions. The story shows anarchist tendencies of adolescents simultaniously from theirs and society’s perspective. I think this could be a well argued for interpretation. Have a nice day if you’ve read this! :)

Ramund almost comes across as a Nolan-type Joker: he's not after any purpose, he only has this urge to experience and especially cause events that others didn't see coming and so throws them off-kilter. People can latch onto it from different perspectives, and it can connect very different concepts or questions or ideas in our cognitive network. The moral is quite blatant, it is that with confidence and conviction comes success. First we are shown that Ramund is not in fact particularly strong with the bit about his clothes, when we are basically told that he looks weak. Which brings us to the boat, he displays his confidence that all will be well while the sailors believe all to be lost, and so they get through the storm and discover some enchanted land through sheer bloody-mindedness. Then he meets the Trolls. We must not forget here that Trolls are things that prevent you from getting places. They guard passes through mountains and fords through rivers and the like. These Trolls however seem to regard our Ramund as so pitiable that they begin to weep. Ramund tells us that he does not care at all for the Trolls in return, which is about as clear a way of saying “I don’t care for any obstacle in my path” as you can imagine, and proceeds with such confidence in his stride that his very footsteps shake the Trolls from the mountains. This is our second metaphor for confidence overcoming all obstacles. Then, because three is the magic number, we have a Giant face him. There is an extra message in this metaphor in that the Giant actually does fight him, but despite being bigger and stronger than his opponent he is overcome because he was willing to concede in the first place. This is just to drive home the message that if you have complete faith in yourself, as Ramund does, you can even overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, such as Giants.
