"The Sound of Silence" bringt am stärksten das Hauptthema von Simon & Garfunkel zum Ausdruck, die Vereinsamung der Menschen in der modernen oberflächlichen Gesellschaft. Es erzählt von der Vision eines Menschen, der diese Gesellschaft durchblickt und ihre Mängel erkennt, jedoch daran scheitert, ihr seine Erkenntnis mitzuteilen. Er erlebt zwei verschiedene Arten von Einsamkeit, die im Gegensatz zueinander stehen. Einmal ist da die "natürliche Einsamkeit" der Dunkelheit, in der er allein mit seinen Gedanken und Gefühlen ist. Im Gegensatz zu den klassischen Konnotationen des Wortes ist es hier nicht negativ besetzt, sondern eine persönliche Zuflucht vor der Kälte und Leere der Welt. Die Dunkelheit ist für ihn ein Freund ("my old friend"), zu dem er zurückkehrt ("to talk with you again"), sich also bei ihr geborgen fühlt. In dieser Geborgenheit ereilt ihn eine Vision, in der er die andere Einsamkeit kennen lernt. In traumhaften Bildern erfährt er, wie sich diese in der Gesellschaft zeigt. Sie ist die Stille, von der das Lied handelt - der Mangel an echter Kommunikation, die Unfähigkeit, zu verstehen, und der Verlust der Menschlichkeit. Zwar ist diese Gesellschaft, deren Beschreibung an eine geschäftige, moderne Stadt denken lässt ("neon light", "ten thousand people") oberflächlich betrachtet ein positiver Gegensatz zur Dunkelheit, aber wie schon bei dieser sind die Konnotationen umgekehrt. Das Licht ist kalt und feindselig ("stabbed", "split the night"). Alles, was die Menschen tun, ist ohne Inhalt, Zweck und Verständnis: sie reden, sagen dabei aber nichts aus, sie hören, ohne auf das Gehörte zu achten und es zu verstehen. Dies ist der Klang der Stille. Diese paradox scheinende Phrase drückt aus, wie das Sinnleere sich im Lärm der Massen äußert und so kein Raum für Tiefgehendes bleibt, nur noch das Oberflächliche zählt. Auch für individuellen Ausdruck und Aufbegehren gibt es keine Möglichkeit, die Menschen verbleiben in diesem Zustand ("no one dared disturb...") Der Ich-Erzähler nun versucht, als Prophet aufzutreten und den Menschen diese Stille und ihre Bösartigkeit bewusst zu machen. Dadurch, dass sich niemand gegen sie auflehnt, wächst sie wie ein Krebsgeschwür und erstickt sie so immer weiter. Deshalb will er sie dazu bewegen, sich von dieser Selbstauflösung in der Gesellschaft abzuwenden und auf seiner Seite Geborgenheit und Wahrheit zu suchen ("that I might teach you", "take my arms"). Doch es gelingt ihm nicht, sie zu erreichen - die Menschen hören ihm wie allem anderen nicht zu, seine Worte sind nur "silent raindrops", die nichts bewirken. Nur in den Manifestationen der Stille ruft er eine Reaktion hervor ("echoed in the wells of silence"). Die Menschen dienen ("bowed and prayed") diesen Ausdrücken des modernen Lebens, die eigentlich von ihnen geschaffen wurden ("the neon god they made"), aber sie nun beherrschen und ihrer Menschlichkeit berauben. Diese Personifikationen der Stille sind ihre Götzen geworden, nach denen sie ihr Leben ausrichten. Nun warnen sie die Menschen vor dem Erzähler und dessen Botschaft, um diesen Zustand der Leere und Stille zu erhalten und weiter zu vertiefen. Ihm entgegen setzen sie die Texte von Graffitis, die sie als die wahren Prophetenworte ausrufen ("the words of the prophets are writen on the subway walls"). Diese verstehen sich oberflächlich als Aufbegehren gegen die Gesellschaft, doch verbleiben in dieser Oberflächlichkeit und sind somit nur ein noch stärkerer Ausdruck der Stille, insbesondere durch die Repräsentativität auch der Orte, auf denen sie aufgesprüht sind, für die gesamte moderne Gesellschaft. Dass sie diese Worte zu ihrer "heiligen Schrift" machen, drückt gerade die Sinnentleerung der Grundlagen dieser Gesellschaft aus und zeigt somit das schlussendliche Scheitern des Ich-Erzählers, denn am Ende verbleibt der Klang der Stille als "Schlusswort" ("and whispered in the sound of silence")..... Egal, Jede Version dieses Lieds ist Tiefgründig auf seine eigene Art.... Love them all !!!

This song by Simon & Garfunkel, was about the horrible war of Vietnam. When there was some silence in the jungles of Vietnam during the war over there, it was a haunting sound, because when all the birds and animals go silent, it means the calm before the storm, my older friends that served in that war told me about the sudden silence and how spooky it was, the Americans knew something very bad was coming when all went silent day or night. Very few people know this ,but if the US Air force did only 2 more weeks of air strikes the Vietnamese where gonna sign the surrender papers, but the Americans didn't know that, and instead they pulled every one out and headed home with no victory. Then again a war is nothing if no side wins or if the one that started it gives up because the enimy is to strong and won't even budge for 10 long years, all that money and lives wasted for nothing!!! War is stupid!! Yet we still do it!!! 🧐🧐🤔🤔🤨🤨😔😔🇨🇦🇺🇸
