David Draiman is a classically trained singer and has an amazing sound and range. Disturbed is a phenomenal metal band. Really enjoyed your take on his performance. It is such a pity when live performances are ruined by autotune... People do not understand that singing isn't flawless. Every video on youtube where singer is using extreme singing (belting, whistle, distortion...) and is perfect is heavily processed and either lipsynced or autotuned. There is just no way anybody can lay a perfect vocals on hard songs in 1 take. There is always gonna be some bad timing or flat/sharp note or vibrato flaw or something... Hiding these flaws puts unspeakable pressure on newcomers. I do not understand why these vocal coaches do not react only to unmiced performances of singers. Makes much more sense... David Draiman has described himself as "sick as a dog" the night he performed this on Conan. 102° temperature and bronchitis to boot. David Draiman is a genuine baritone, with a massive vocal range, and was classically trained as a cantor in a synagogue when he was younger. I heard that they didn't even tell him they were going to use Auto-Tune, they just did it without his permission. He didn't find out until post, and he didn't even find out from them, he heard it in the track and confronted them with it. Man, was he ever pissed. From what I hear he hates Auto-Tune, 'cause he feels like it's cheating. You should go listen to the live concert version with Myles Kennedy.

It's unlikely he was unaware of the auto tune. These kinds of TV events are pretty meticulously coordinated ahead of time and all the specifics of the performance are designed. His name is David Draiman. I've known him personally for about 14yrs now. No, he doesn't use auto-tune. He and I have had many convos about music as I'm a drummer and singer in a metal band. He has a phenomenal voice. However, this particular show (against his initial protests) they did add a slight auto-tune to his voice. Apparently they do that with all the people who go on to make sure it's a totally clean and smooth performance. All his other shows and performances, it's all him. Dave has such a great range crazy voice control. Tara Simon is an absolutely amazing vocalist herself. I've seen many of her videos and such. All those freaking out and making rude and disrespectful comments need to grow up. She was pointing out what she heard and noticed. As is HER JOB! Read the name of the video genius's. She's a professional and the fact that she can catch those little things shows how good she really is so kudos for that. This was a good video and I'm now subscribing.

Audio engineer here: I can't hear any autotune, but the voice has a delay effect on it. Not so notorious, but it's there. You could be thinking it was autotune because autotune is essentially just a combination of a lot of delays with different time syncs and decay, to giv the illusion that the singer is holding the note. A voice with delys will automatically seem a little more in tune, but just because you're listening to that note over and over, although at anincreasingly lower volume
@GRIMRPR69425 жыл бұрын
This was asked in later interviews, David has stated that the studio engineer & their manager got into a "heated discussion" and the studio wouldnt let him perform without an auto tune mic, so yah, it was there.
@richardsinclair76615 жыл бұрын
Sergio Zamorano I don't know how you can't hear it. His voice has an artificial depth to it, and the tone is entirely too smooth. This doesn't diminish Dave's singing abilities, but yeah. This was extremely tuned.

@djjazzyjeff12324 жыл бұрын
@@guitaroffthecuff-davids5528 No I get it, no worries. It's because I've heard rumors that he had nothing to do with it and it was the Conan show that did it afterwords, so I don't think he had anything to do with it. He does have an amazing range and is capable of delivering the performance that's on the record, and he doesn't need the help, that's why I don't understand why they would stain his performance with it, and that's why it bothers me so much because they definitely did, just listen: Go on a journey with me if you will, here are some clips: (for the actual Conan video, not this video) 1:12 the whole line "'neath the halo of a streetlamp", 1:25, the whole thing, but worst on the word "neon", 1:45 the whole line, but mostly the word "light" the notes move too quickly for to be a real human voice, 2:09 the word "and" is the same as before, much too quickly and perfect for the human voice to achieve. 2:52 The word rain"drops", same as the last too. That one's REALLY blatant. 3:00 is closer to how the human voice actually reacts Those are just some examples. The whole thing is autotuned I suspect, but it's harder to tell after they word "prayed" when he goes to the distorted voice. That's why I say "the first part of this anyway" is definitely autotuned. Not to toot my own horn, but I've taken ear tests similar to an eye exam where you hear two tones back to back and have to decide which is the higher pitch, and I can detect it correctly at the smallest difference the machine is capable of producing 10 times in a row, at which point instead of saying your percentile of hearing ability, it basically just says, "You win" This next thing might sound idiotic to you but I promise it's true. If you still can't hear it, listen to it while you're a bit drunk. The human brain when you're drunk has a tough time reconciling things that are not real. For example, if you watch a movie when you're drunk, every scene that's green-screened or CGI will stick out like a sore thumb. Seriously, drink 3+ beers and watch Transformers or Game of Thrones, you'll be blown away with how ridiculous it looks. I suspect it's because your brain is slowed, so the instantaneousness and "perfectness" of a green screen feels unnatural. The exact same phenomenon happens with autotune.

This has so much power and emotion, which matches perfectly with the lyrics.

Apparently when a band/singer performs on a show, like Conan’s, the decision to add auto-tune is made in post-production almost as a default ‘yes.’ The lead singer of Disturbed is, himself, a sound engineer and neither wants nor would want auto-tune added. If you listen to the video of Disturbed Live in Houston performing, you’ll hear a non-auto tune version.

Try Blind Guardian, it'll change your mind. Same vocal balance between cleans and growls, and catchy choruses, but with better melodies, lyrics, technicality (and sometimes orchestra). They got me to a whole new level, and I never could come back to Nu Metal afterwards. This said, liking Disturbed shows some good musical tastes... waiting to fully awaken... \m/ kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXe9kIivpselas0

The 'autotune' echo quality of his voice is because that is David Draiman. David Draiman has nodules on his vocal cords. Normally this leads to a very breathy, raspy sound to a person's speech, however in David's case it gives him his legendary "3-voice-voice". In order to bring all his vocal cords to full resonance and issue that 3-voice sound he had to bring his chin down close to his chest. He does this either by looking down as he enters a long vowel sound...or by looking forward with his mouth fully open and lower jaw slightly extended forward. I am not a voice coach or music major, I am a linguist that speaks 21 languages, however when I heard this man's voice many years ago I researched the "how and why" of it all. I didn't expect 15 year old research to be relevant today. Go figure.

It took a "vocal coach" nearly a minute to recognize a song written by Paul Simon? Are you kidding me? It's seriously one of the most iconic songs ever written. AND, Draiman doesn't use autotune.

Hi everybody I will say and can back up what I'm about to say about David Draimans mic has never been auto-tuned until this performance. ok and ill tell you why he was pissed off after the show here is why. OK, So for the auto tune. Yes, it was there, but Dave told them not to add it, but since he was sick during this performance, Conan's people put it in without his permission. You can see how pissed he is when he realized it was there. he was very upset with Conan's people. and had made some comments about not preforming for them ever again because they didn't have his permission to do so... because he doesn't need no autotune in his mic that's for sure.. David has one of those voices that will raise the hair on the back of your neck and send chills down you spine.. he was blessed with a voice from god

Hey Tara! It does, but if you hear him in other performances, his voice stays the same! There is one where he accidentally starts too high and works his way back to the right key by mid song. Also his "normal" style isn't this.. very heavy, and guttural.

I'm sure this has been commented before, but David asked that he not be given an autotuned mic. There are people I've seen who claim he noticed very quickly because at the start of the song he looks off to the side and doesn't seem too happy.

I'd love to see the source of him saying he asked for a non auto-tuned mic. The only links I've seen are of him talking about the studio recording not using auto-tune... nothing about this live version. Anyone got links about the live version and NOT the studio recording?

I have watched a few reaction videos on this song/performance. Everyone gets some thumbs down... But this has more than some. The focus of what is on his chin is so irrelevant. And then suggesting that it may be autotuned as if she can't believe this metal guy actually sings that well. Of course if she did even the tiniest bit of research she would have learned he has had major vocal training.

@@slvrangel22 , that time he was using autotune, according to many sources. He didn't want to, but was sick that night and IIRC, producers with the show forced the issue. The beauty of her reactions are that she didn't know who he was, and she clearly pointed out many aspects of his talent that reflected the training he had. Her obsession with his chin was funny - again - coming from someone who didn't know who he was. I've watched reaction videos where all people did was bob their head and make faces. Her assessment was fascinating.
