I worked on the Bivins Ranch Lit Division for many years in the 70’s and 80’s. My working saddle was custom made at Oliver’s Saddle Shop. Still in good working order . Great saddle makers!!!

Hey guys forgive my ignorance, but what’s the difference between ranch Bronc and saddle Bronc riding, like I know how saddle bronc riding is judged, but how would you mark a ranch bronc?
@DustyReinsStories5 жыл бұрын
The ranch bronc rules are explained in some of the bronc riding videos and they sometimes vary. But generally, the riders must use a regular ranch saddle of their own and with the WRCA, must be verified so and tagged before the event. Riders may use one hand on the saddle horn but nowhere else on the saddle and no marking is required at all. The riders compete on behalf of their ranch team, not as individuals. The score is determined by the performance of both the horse and the rider then added together for the total score. Ranch team members generally are employees of the ranch they are representing with a limited number of day hands allowed (1 or 2) and they must have day worked on the ranch they are representing sometime within the past 12 months. All team members must make their living as working ranch cowpokes. None of the team members are paid or win money to compete.

The first rodeo I went to was in Timber Lake, SD when I was 7 in 1948. Those were real broncs. They went way up in the air and came down on all 4's, twisted and jumped forward. Nothing like these rocking horses who only know jump and kick. Having said that, riding broncs is nothing but horse abuse. They could be trained to do real work.

Thank you for your suggestion to do a film on the differences in pro-rodeos and ranch rodeos between then and now, particularly in regards to the stock used and the competitors as well.

Ranch rodeo contestants all come from working ranches and they are required to provide their own saddles for events. They are not pro rodeo folks and they do not compete for prize money. Most will only participate in 1-3 rodeos per year.

I know what ranch rodeo is... I'm a ranch manager. Simply stating that if they had a association tree with deep swells and a high back rather than a 1950s pleasure saddle with a low back they would probably stay in the saddle longer. Need a saddle you can lock your knees into and have a rope on your saddle to hang onto other than the saddle horn.

Marking a horse is not required in most ranch bronc riding competitions. But rules can vary depending on what organizations are sanctioning the events and who is running the rodeo. That is why I document many different kinds of rodeos in various locations. To help educate as to what the differences are and over time, rules and events do change.

@DustyReinsStories6 жыл бұрын
I agree. This is the second year for this particular rodeo and the whole thing is run by volunteers with little experience in running such events. The same is true for the Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA) World Championship Ranch Rodeo but they have had 22 years of experience to learn how to run a tight show. Most of their volunteers have been working all 22 previous rodeos in Amarillo. Give the Olivers some more time to get good volunteer help.
