I'm just blown away at the fact the arrow destroyed that bone! To hell with a pass through at that point. The arrowhead still looks perfect after splitting the bone means that's some damn good steel. Great stuff RF.

Those single bevel, FOC, heavy arrows are the only way to go. I've seen flappers bounce off a spine hit and the deer ran away. I've seen them "penetrate" four inches and fall out. That deer took a LOT of tracking. I shot my bear at 30 yards and his neck looked like this shoulder. I had an almost complete pass through with my 650 plus grain, FOC single bevel arrow and he dropped in his tracks. The fletch actually disappeared in his neck fur so I thought it was a pass through. Awesome system and I'm happy you're promoting it.

I break elk shoulders on the regular with a recurve. I once screwed up bad and shot a cow elk smack in the ass, right through the thickest possible part of the hams. That 680 woodie, with a single bevel 2 blade, penetrated over 22 inches of thick, solid muscle, AND took a chunk out of her pelvis. It took a few minutes, but I watched her fall down dead. The right arrow is no joke.
@blakeumthun81282 жыл бұрын
I can attest to the sturdiness of broad heads. Every single flapper that I've had hit bone, bounced off. So I made the decision to go to strictly fixed blade. Then, every "fixed blade", I'm talking the replaceables that you can get everywhere, looked like they had been smacked against a steel corner from just rib bones. The one thing I did notice is, once I moved from 110 gr to 125 gr I was getting more passthroughs provided the shot was ribs only and never had one exit the opposing shoulder. I have shot aluminum arrows my entire life, so I've had heavy arrows but never took into consideration having a lot more FOC. For next year I will be going to a high FOC and single bevels. I wish I had known about Ashby's reports earlier in life instead of just listening to the TV hunters and their speed freak wisdom. Thanks for the work you're putting in to help us all be better at this game!!

I switched to an adult set up 2 years ago. Using a 2 blade 1 1/2 Magnus Traditional head. Not a single bevel but will get some. 720 grains and so far out of the 4 deer I have harvested with it they have died in site. With the 1 1/2 3 blade I was using when I shot they ran as fast and as far as they possibly can before they died. With this set up it has gone thru them so fast they have all run 20 yards stopped turned around to figure what happened and fell over right there.

As always... great information Troy. Currently I'm running a set up a bit lighter than you advocate for. However, they fly fantastic, and I'm shooting the heaviest arrows in my group. (with the shortest draw length, too) Black Eagle X-impact 300 spine with F.O.C.O.S. steel insert/outsert system and kudu point Contour + 125g head. Since I only have a 27.5" draw length, my arrows are 21.1% FOC at 477 grains. I shoot a VXR 31.5 at 72lbs. Living in Washington state, we've got a disgusting amount of trees and brush to avoid when throwing arrows at animals. However, I've been building a heavier set up that I plan on using for the 2023 season. End goal is around 620 grains while still keeping the 20-21 percent FOC. I really appreciate all the information and comprehensive explanation. Keep up the excellent work.

Just wanted to stop and say I dipped my toe into the FOC stuff this year. I bought some vector arrows. And bought some tooth of the arrow broadheads. I know they aren’t single bevel but I shot a deer last night and hit it at a slight quartering too angle at 34 yards. It was the only angle I had. Arrow hit in the shoulder. Busted the shoulder blade, hit a rib on both sides and stopped just below the skin on the other side. Found him laying 60 yards away from shot. Last year using rages on normal arrows I hit a rib and it broke a blade. But i now have the confidence that these arrow setup I have now will increase my success rate if I have a poor shot. Next year I may look into some single bevels.

12:24; 'with an adult arrow' .... lol, gets me every time! Thank you sir for the video, great input on more pig/deer anatomy and results from bow shots. Love the info! I shot a nice little 8-pt last week and my shot went awry to the left, cutting immediately in FRONT of the shoulder, somehow barely nicking the heart or one of the arteries around it yet that deer required a follow-up shot when we found it. Still a little mystified but at least I came home with it. I do know when I made the initial shot, there was a loud 'thwack', may have grazed that shoulder bone somehow and then it angled forward slightly. Don't know ... oh well.

@@RanchFairy also want to note I was late to the game this year, having a kid gets in the way of things so your three blades are amazing for people that don't have the time to put into learning to sharpen and they are also concentric so tuning arrows is a lot faster. Both things you touch on in your promotional video for the broad heads but I want people to know, they don't have to devote themselves to weeks and months of arrow tuning and learning to sharpen, the three blade broad heads are a great "training wheel" system to get people started with heavy broadheads and they are monkey proof for sharpening. He didn’t jump the string. He was alerted when I put my red light on him and went from slightly quartering towards to straight facing me by the time the arrow got there. It hit him just below the right eye, he ran maybe 30 yards or so and piled up. The nock was barely sticking out under his eye and the broadhead was poking out of his undercarriage slightly. That arrow was right at 550 grains with a QAD exodus swept blade broadhead.

The doe ran and then stood up on a ridge 70 yards away and started walking back towards me then started wobbling and ran 50 more yards and died. Only caught one lung on the top of the last lobe. She lived for 3 minutes, had I shot her with a mechanical that scared her at impact she would have probably run full tilt 500 yards before dying. Broadhead was sharp after the kill and is back in my quiver on the same arrow! No more broken arrows with single bevels!! No need for the improved steel, get the black ones as I sharpened those for my brother and they are was easier to sharpen, and you will beat your head against a wall for 4 hours minimum with the harder steel trying to get it sharp for the first time.
