I agree with Rand Paul on a lot here. However, Larry Paul and Trump failed to understand that we lost 250L jobs in manufacturing in Trump’s first 10% tariff in his first term. Not to mention you’re talking about cutting while tax cuts to the top 1% adding to our deficit. If we want to resolve this huge budget we got to be honest on totality. Good luck telling people you’re cutting their social security checks or military pay cuts. Unrealistic with 60 votes in US Senate.

Trump's inflationary tax cuts failed to pay for themselves. Even with $6 trillion in COVID stimulus juicing the numbers, The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was a net loss for our federal budget. Again, tax cuts are inflationary. Rand Paul voted for inflationary tax cuts that hurt this country's bottom line.

There is something to the 'inflation as evidence of greed' argument. When large retailers realize that they've driven the competition out of business, and that their customers are in an environment in which they're apt to accept price rises (because "everyone is doing it" and "it happens all over"), they'll raise prices just because they can, even if they already have a healthy margin. That does lead to perceived inflation. In Europe, there are similar monopoly- or cartelized situations, but the retailers feel a duty not to gouge their customers. Certain countries also run offices of pricing review (like even Switzerland!). This is one idea the Democrats got right, though they got it right only to distract voters from other causes of inflation.

If inflation is the creation of money supply - the monetary idea of Milton Friedman by the way- why is Japan not having any significant inflation during its 35 years of quantitative easing? Why were those years even mostly deflationary?
@jonswanson77663 сағат бұрын
Have you read "Princes of the Yen?" Best economics book ever. Most money is created when a commercial bank makes a loan. Credit card money causes inflation. Congressman Clarence Brown told that right to Friedman's face! Episode 9, "Free to Choose." Around the twenty seven minute mark.
@jonswanson77662 сағат бұрын
By the way, great point! Reagan increased the deficit by two hundred percent and inflation decreased! Milton Friedman was wrong about inflation.
@christianketterer76522 сағат бұрын
@@jonswanson7766 I did not read the book. But I probably will. Seems like an interesting read for an economist like me. Money creation by ordinary banks through credit is a good point, but also falls short. Because credit is also cheap in Japan. You could get mortgages for less than 1.5% interest for decades. A car loan has still less than 4% interest. Now why did the Reagan spending spree not cause inflation? “It’s the demand and supply balance, stupid!” Times were bad back then, unemployment and interest rates high, the people weren’t spending. That’s why the global 22/23 inflation was out of the inflation playbook. While businesses reduced supply in 21, governments started spending programs keeping people afloat and in their jobs. Once the economies bounced back, people started spending, but the supply wasn’t there, except in Japan. Remember especially flight tickets skyrocketing in 2022 because carriers didn’t have enough airplanes? Now you can do the math for what will happen when Trump implements tariffs on imports while reducing federal taxes. Right, demand will increase while supply will go down, hence inflation!
