Lew Grade's ITC shows really made a huge impact in the 60's and early 70's........but it was the year 1969 when ITC had 2 great shows running....one was Randall & Hopkirk, the other being Dept S.......great TV days.
@Robert_Manners4 жыл бұрын
I fully agree, however at the time they were not well received by the late 1960's audience. It wasn't until a good few years later that they were viewed again and people started to realise that they were examples of excellent TV 📺 that were a little ahead of their time when produced.

I wasn't born until August 1969 so I missed this brilliant show the first time around. I grew up in the 1970's where I was captivated by Doctor Who and The New Avengers, but I saw a repeat of this show in 1976 when I was in Wales and I liked it. I then saw another repeat of the series between 1986 and 87. I now have the whole series on DVD, .. classic!
@IanP19634 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with your comments Vinny about the newer R&H series - I won't even bother with it. I was 7 yrs old when I first started watching this TV series in 1969, same year as the Moon landings, loved it then and love it still now. I am still watching R&H today, it's being repeated on Sony Channel every day at 8pm at present. I spoke with Kenneth Cope once on the phone in 2004, when I was writing a book about Richard Wattis of SYKES fame [to name one of many things he was in]. He told me that in one block they'd be filming R&H and in another Roger Moore would be filming THE SAINT and they'd have breaks together, going round to each other for a cuppa !!!!

I only ever spotted two continuity errors when the show first aired. Very small but I did notice them. The first one was when Marty sat down next to Jeff and Jeff's body 'jumped' as the weight of Marty hit the cushion on the sofa. This wouldn't happen if he was a real ghost, of course lol. Secondly, the registration number on Jeff's car was the same as on a police car in one episode. Great to see this again, thanks.
@vincecox29169 жыл бұрын
Martyn Brown Hi Martyn. Sorry for the late reply. Jeff's registration started with RXD. One of the police cars started with PXD. This may be what's confusing you!

Hello Vince. I totally agree with you about the Reeves and Mortimor comment. Always will. And if I had the series on DVD I would skip over 'Murder ain't what it used to be', as I never liked it. However, this was a series I loved from the very first episode way back when. I'd have been about 11 or 12 at the time. Terrific series. Continuity is quite an exact subject, often overlooked, until it goes wrong. I have a friend who was Continuity girl on The Avengers in the sixties and seventies - nearly all of Emma Peel period and early Tara King period. They also worked on 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Inadmisable Evidence'. Randall and Hopkirk is a hallmark in TV that is rarely reached and almost never matched. Good on yer, Vince.
@michaeljamesgoulding10 жыл бұрын
FYI on your first mistake if you look really closely at the angle filmed when Jeff is getting out of the car - it is in fact a different person driving the car and not Jeff. You will notice this more if you look at his hair, height and the way his suit fits - it doesn't as its the smallest bit too big for the actor who walks to the blue door and rings the bell.

I also loved this programme as a kid and agree with your points on the remake and the two prats that thought they were funny enough to pull it off. They weren't fit to blacken Ken's boots.

My step grandfather, Thomas Smith, was a lorry driver aged 67 in 1967 when he was awarded compensation because he was nearly crushed to death when a container fell on the cab of his lorry at the docks and the first thing he did was buy a coloured television in a teak cabinet with sliding doors, but sadly all he watched was horse racing, football and coronation st so didn't get to watch Randall & Hopkirk in colour lol all i ever heard from the tv was over to Lou Macari, Lou Macari, Lou Macari lol

Hiya. Love the bid. I may be wrong as it's over 20 years since I've watched the episode, "That's how murder snowballs", but I remember another clear error. It's when Marty is sat in a theatre seat and one of the other cast nearly sits on him. It showed Marty freeze with his arms up, jump out of his seat, then sit down in the next seat whilst giving a dirty look at the person who nearly sat on him. I'm sure that this error was caused by the editor not "cutting" Marty's movements to make it look like he had "ghost jumped" into the next seat. Worth a re-look, (as long as no one has since done a "George Lucas" and fixed it,). Cheers.

Hello Vinny, I've only just found this. As an 11 year old I adored this programme, and wrote to both Mike and Kenneth. Both replied to me, Mike's typed (very badly!) but signed in ink, and Ken's hand written, and both enclosed signed photos. I still have them, and the envelope (in Ken's handwriting) shows the price of a stamp at the time was......4d. Without digging them out this minute, I think the postmark was November 1969.
@williampetersen99159 жыл бұрын
There was another error in Murder Ain't What It Used To Be. When Bugsy is showing Marty how he was double-crossed and murdered by Kirstner back in Chicago, all the vehicles are standard European right hand drive instead of American left hand drive. More than likely a matter of the production budget, but still technically an error.
@Stringbean4217 жыл бұрын
The scene in the laundrette was not a continuity error. The reason Marty's chair was set slightly back from Jeff''s is because of the side view angle of the camera. If Marty was level with Geoff on that side view then we would of course not have been able to see Jeff.
@misterteaification6 жыл бұрын
It's the "sitting level" bit that is the continuity error. If KC had been sitting back a bit when the actors were face-on to the camera, there would have been very little to object to.

Forgotten just what a great series this was. Stands up really well today. It was that rare thing: a comedy thriller that worked as both a comedy and a crime thriller. I remember my brother bought himself an all white suit circa 1972 and wore it to the school disco. (None of this US style Prom rubbish then) It was some time before the other kids stopped calling him Marty Hopkirk. Thank you for posting the clip. Have you got any other R & H stuff?

Hi Uk Neil. The only episode I can think of which you must be thinking about is 'The smile behind the veil' where Marty appears sitting on the tomb beside his own grave as Jean is putting some flowers down. Shortly after, another funeral arrives and the burial takes place the other side of Marty's grave. Hope this helps.

LOL, GREAT - Why the hell Jeff didn't give up being punched in the face to become the world's greatest mind reader (see That's How Murder Snowballs) I'll never know. We'd never have heard of Uri Geller, he'd have made millions with Marty, then he could have spent the rest of his life rolling around with Jeannie not caring a toss any more about Marty's opinions.

I don't usually like pedantic mistake videos, but to be fair, the continuity on this great show was so fkin poor, its worth highlighting. Don't think the budget is to blame, its whoever hired the idiots who worked on it. The great main actors distracted most from the appalling mistakes.

You are mocking this series doing this, supposedly you're favorite! RH had it's place in the greatest ever era of tv, US/UK. I was hooked totally on The Champions, Department S, Man in a Suitcase, The Saint. RH was great fun, the classic line 'Why can't you stay dead like everyone else' ep1. True Entertainment are showing them now!

mark taylor Hi Mark. When we were informed that a remake was being made, us serious fans in the appreciation society were both excited and sceptical. Once I found out the Reeves and Mortimer were cast, my heart dropped. Personally, I find these two about as funny as sticking pins in my eyes but their acting ability was painful to watch. There were one or two good points, like the theme tune, which I thought was excellent and of course, Mike Pratt's son, Guy, appeared in one episode, albeit very briefly.

+Vince Cox Although this and Catweazle are my earliest recollections of tv (incidentally Kenneth Cope appears in the latter with the Hopkirk wig!), I must insist that 'The Prisoner' was the greatest 60's series. Not at all. It's not done in a mean spirited way, but obviously comes from seeing it zillions of times. I thought I was a big fan but never noticed a lot of these! What Vinny says at 7:49 rings true, the big appeal of the series for me was that it was like going back to 60s London, no film nor series seems to better represent the style of the period, the gaudy pea green and saffron decor, the tinny, quirky music, the dolly birds, the cars etc than this series.

Hi mate. Sorry this has taken so long to reply to. Thank you for your comments, very appreciated. I was fortunate enough to have a chance to join the Randall & Hopkirk appreciation society through which I've met both Kenneth Cope and Annette Andre. Sadly Mike Pratt died way back in 1976 so I never had a chance to meet him but the lady who put the society together did meet him a couple of times. I was able to acquire a signed photo of Mike and also a signed letter which I found by chance on Ebay.
