The Model 3 appeared in the 1940s and is more than worthy of consideration in a time of techo gadgets. There are two steel options available. One being hand forged O-1 tool steel and the other a hand forged 440 stainless steel. This is one of the few forged stainless blades on the market today. The piece shown in the review has been in use since 1978.

My first came from Abercrombie and Fitch when it was a store for Men. Thought I was headed to Nam so I bought a Model 18 for $44.

I’ve had my 3-6 (0-1 steel w/sambar stag handle) for many years. It’s my favorite hunting knife and has out performed all other custom knives I’ve owned field dressing deer and wild hogs.

I also own and use my Randall Bear Bowie 12-8. Blade stays razor sharp even after cleaning a deer.

Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. All I can tell you is, the Mdl 3 in the video was bought from a dealer in Jackson Hole WY in the summer of 1977. Both the sheath and knife were in pristine condition at time of purchase. There was no green on the brass guard or leather. Likewise the O1 ( carbon not stainless) blade had no patina on the factory polish. Since 1977 the knife has some use and done some traveling , hence it looks it's age. All that yammered........if any Randall schallars have further input, we'd be interested to hear from them .

I see your model 3-6 has finger grooves. Beautiful knife. Best ever made. I own a Lile #19 with D2 steel. My Randall 0-1 blade edge lasts a lot longer cleaning deer and hogs.

0-1 blade maintenance after cleaning game: 1) wash with hot soapy water 2) dry 3) oil 4) if blade is tarnished use metal polish to remove. This keeps my 0-1 Randalls looking new. Best blade sharpener I’ve used is a diamond stone by DMT/dia-sharp. I have a coarse, fine, and extra fine.

Washing with hot water also helps remove game fat from the blade.

I wonder if they can do a model 24 with a higher carbon content in the blade steel. Just for easy sharpening.

Dear Duane, I have just come across your video. Can you list the activities that you find the Model 3 useful for please? Can it be used for food preparation in camp or is the blade too thick. Very informative video, thanks.

Thanks for watching and leaving a couple of questions. As mentioned in the video, Randall designed the Mdl 3 to be an all around outdoor knife. The blade has plenty of sweep for removing hides game animals up to and including elk and moose. There is ample straight cutting edge for general utility. A well sharpened Randall will easily deal with most camp kitchen / chuck wagon applications. It will even cut thick tomatoes slices ( 1/4 inch) but not thin designer salad accents. Likewise it will easily chop carrots, dice 'taders, quarter poultry, head and gut a salmon or tuna, but its not a sushi or sashimi knife. If a Mdl 3 will see use around salt water or used for camp preparation of citrus or other acidic foods a forged stainless would be better. Also a treated wood or synthetic handle material should be considered. Hope this helps

Sir. Did they make a mode 8 I have a vintage Randall made knife on the back of the sheath it has a 84. It's stag 01 steel with thin spacers. I would like to know the mod an year made. Any info would help. I thought it was a mod 84 . Thanks my name is Danny

Hello Danny, Thank you for watching our presentation and asking a question. Randall continues to produce the Model 8. ( check Randallknives.com ) The Mdl 8 has some interesting history. During the Cold War American Pilot Francis G. Powers , was carrying a mdl 8 when his U2 spy plane was shot down over Russia. Legend has it it's on display in the Kremlin Museum . There are books on the topic of dating Randalls. I'm NOT a spokesman for Randall , but they've answered my e-mail questions to them. As to the numbering on your sheath, Randall has used a number of leather smiths to craft it's sheaths. Dating them is a study unto it's self. Typically ( not always) when there are two numbers they will appear with some space between them , or on either end of the Randall trade mark . Such as 8 ( trade mark) 4. This translates Model 8 with a 4 inch blade. The model 3 in the video has 3 ( space) 6 on the sheath. Meaning, Model 3 with 6 inch blade. The Model 5 on the left of the screen has 5 ( space) 8 . Translating to Model 5 with 8 inch blade. The Model 1 on the right with a measured 5 inch blade. has only a 5 on the back of the sheath. I gather that stands for 5" blade. Hope this helps

THX for liking & subscribing . Glad the content was informative. As to the hat, I was at a family camping trip to Big Bear Lake, CA. I arrived without proper head gear. I found the hat in the video, at The Big Bear Discovery Center, on the north shore of the lake. For better or worse, there aren't any noteworthy adventures to go with it.

Randall steel is from the 40ies too. We are now in 2020....80 years later. There are better steels.
@eac1235

Your way behind the times. The steel isnt from the 40s. While there are better steels ,I'm very sure Randall buyers know this and it has no bearing on their decision to purchase. I recieved my model 14 this year and I can tell you that as a knife conasouier it arrived sharp as a scalpel and what's more it holds a edge better than ANY knife I have ever owned. We all have our opinions and preferences.

I’ve used the “newer” steels but they haven’t performed better than my old Randall in 0-1 tooled steel skinning wild hogs.
