I had the same though about the strips... "maybe they are worth something later". I plan on building packs using solid copper cable I get from "pump wire". It's a 4 strand 12-guage twisted wire you can get at the home center that doesn't have the extra outer coating to strip off. Great video, thanks again!

RE: Trolling motors, the one limitation that stands out to me is the ability to cool the motor as it is no longer going to be submersed in water. As I am machinist I can see cutting and modifying the housing to incorporate a fan powered by the motor itself or externally either/or with the addition of ventilation holes on the opposite end to draw air. Just a thought you might want to look into if you do I would look forward to seeing the video and would be happy to comment with any help I might be able to provide. Thanks again

WOW! Your bench looks like mine. 18650 a go go. LOL. Because of the low current draw under load of my motors. I am thinking of using Boost dc to dc converters. 10Amp each per motor at 94Volts. So each of the 4 motors in the pod would have it's own power source essentialy. Then PWM type throttling for 4 motors using 2 dual stereo pots with the shafts coupled together. I believe that would work. Under full load each motor takes 3Amps. That's with roughly 280 pounds on the shaft and it was still turning at speed. I hope you get the same out of your car motor. Looking forward to the next video my very good friend. have a great day.

ah, how sweet that feeling when u open up a laptop battery.. been working on 18650 cells about 1.5 years now and ur videos helped me get to know pretty much about these cells, but here s an advice, since my imax b6 clone charger started to fuck around lately I upgraded it to turnigy accucell 6 80w and I can tell you I m getting waay more accurate capacity readings this time, you must get one. I ve thrown a lot batteries because of imax clone but now I get the best out of my cells.

I find that Li-ion actually 4.1V fully charged, there is a mode change in that iMax charger choosing between LiPo / Li-Io
@TheSpotify956 жыл бұрын
That mode undercharges the cells. You should use the Li-Po mode as that will take them up to 4.2V, which virtually all chargers use as the cut off voltage.

Are you planning on supplementing or replacing the golf cart batteries. If you keep them then they should act like big caps and handle your burst energy needs with their power density while the LiIon carries the energy density for your range. Seems like it could be very complimentary.

Looking forward to the city car project. Have you considered 1" or 3/4" 16 gauge square tubing for the bike project rather than angle iron? Used making the frame of locost 7 replica's/clones etc of Lotus/Caterham 7's. Strong enough for that, should be enough for a bike and likely be easier to work with and some some weight. Of course, same problem you mentioned in another post is having to find a steel supplier. Any reason you don't pick up a small flux core welder or another from harbor freight? Have one of the older splatter boxes from them. The welds are not real pretty (mostly user caused on that part) and need cleaning due to the flux core welding spool but it does the job.

crap...i ruined 2 of my good cells...was making a 3s pack with 4 in parallel and while I was soldering them together I flipped it over onto a piece of solder wire which burned up quickly but not quick enough before it sent a lot of amps into 2 of my cells that were hooked together at 3v. Everything was getting really hot then I grabbed my bolt cutters and clipped the rows apart those 2 batteries I have in a safe place for now in case they catch fire.
@Deqster8 жыл бұрын
Oh and from a professional welder, GET A HOOD! You'll get face tan lines using goggles. Goggles are fine for oxy-acetylene welding, because the UV output is way lower. For arc-welding you need a hood with at least a shade #10 lens to filter out the UV rays to a safe level for your eyes. Also wear long sleeves and make sure you're neck-line is covered... I've been sun-burned before on the arms and neck.

I have approximately 90 seemingly good cells so far, although I have yet to test the capacity of them all. My end goal is a 60v 20ah pack (16s10p). Quick question for you: When calculating what the total amp hours of my pack will be, do I take an average of the individual cells capacity, or do I go by the weakest link? Also, could you recommend a good source for used laptop batteries? Most of what I have I've obtained from ebay, but I've heard battery repair shops and electronic stores will sometimes give them away. Wondering your experience with this. Thanks again!

You Sir are a junkie, I a'm proud to be associated with you as I am also a junkie.I have to inquire as to the gasoline pump in your backyard? The real subject of my question here is have you ever done in the experimentation with fishing/trolling motors for powering bicycles etc. I did see some quite promising results from a failed project of a friend who was clueless as to what he was doing. To salvage a trolling motor seems logical as they are a low-speed high torque motor to begin with, with all the variable speed controls and reverse supplied within the unit in its original form therefore inviting to be cut up butchered up and taken apart for other application. If you get a chance please respond to this. Thanks, Dave P/S I enjoy your videos keep up the good work.

I am very new at this and looking for some help. Can you tell me if in the picture you posted that shows 6 rows of 12 cells in parallel, assuming 3ah per cell, would produce 216ah and assuming 4.2v per cell, would produce 25.2v as shown in your diagram. It looks like you posted the diagram in 2013. It talks about 6 of these packs in series. Then, for my project, if I built a pack with 3 rows of 5 cells parallel, assuming 2ah per cell, would produce 30 ah and assuming 4v per cell, would produce 12v. If this is accurate, then I need to understand exactly how to install the wiring to the power outlet and balancing wiring. This is intended for a golf push cart. Am I on the right track here?? So, instead of buying an 80 dollar stick welder at harbor freight, which will give you much more control over the amperage and voltage flowing through the stick. making it so your welds won't be porous, disgusting, and weak. you bought 3 batteries totaling almost twice that? Not to mention the electrode holder you showed in a previous video, the jumper cables, and the grounding clamp. you said it cost you like 200 bucks for "welding supplies" when realistically you could have gotten a 120v AC 70 amp stick welder with the electrode holder, grounding clamp. and some cheap welding rods for less than 200. i don't understand
@RinoaL9 жыл бұрын
+ghostrider433 because these batteries are also a solar panel power bank. and also that 80$ welder your talking about is a piece of shit i wouldnt go near. its probably just a bunch of resistors.
@ghostrider4339 жыл бұрын
That's true. the batteries are multipurpose. but it's going to be alot better in the long run to purchase a welder. and yeah, sure it may be a bunch of resistors and a few transformers. but for 80 bucks you get that. the grounding clamp and thick wire. the electrode holder, and the freedom to adjust how much electricity you're outputting. If you're designing a whole new rear end for your trike it's better to make something that you know is more sturdy and sound. batteries are iffy when it comes to welding. mostly they're used in emergencies, they simply don't heat the metal up enough to properly fuse the rods, and the performance decreases as voltage does, but, it's up to you. i'm just gonna say i have a Harbor freight 240v plasma cutter, and a 240v stick welder, both have been amazing so far. and with the stick welder i have the option of doing TIG welding, which i already have supplies for, just need something to weld. it's worth it imho.

ghostrider433 well my electric tractor held up fine and i built that with battery welding.

I want to scavenge laptop battery packs but I can't afford imax b6 charger . I only have multimeter , is it okay to use????
@TheSpotify955 жыл бұрын
Balance chargers like the iMax and Turnigy Accucel are less than £30 (or the equivalent in $). They're needed for capacity measurements; you can't tell how good a cell is just from voltage. If it has been well used, it might still hold a good voltage but the capacity will be well down.

where the shit do you get all your laptop battery packs???
@romanitzki9 жыл бұрын
Very cool, I took apart 25 laptop packs myself, got them from computer repair shop. For discharge testing I use 3 of these 7.45$ discharge testers. (ebay item number: 271731490268) -- ebay link: www.ebay.com/itm/271731490268?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT -- Also I use 7.5Ohm 5W resistor for a single cell or 3.3 Ohm 10W resistor to test pairs (too lazy to take separate, since they are spot welded in pairs). Discharge them to 3.0V, it stops automatically and displays mAh, so great! This speeds up the testing process considerably compared to one iMax B6. Thanks for the videos again, I am following every step of your new citicar project, very inspiring :)

+Roman Seibel you make a good point abou speed of testing. do you know where i can learn more about these testers you linked up. the ebay listing is a generic name instead of something specific so when searched in youtube don't really show that particular unit.

Hi Danh, unfortumately I couldn't find anything on google or youtube, I guess it would be great if some one would make a review of one of those. I can't find the time unfortunately.
