** UPDATED VIDEO FROM AUGUST 2024: • Helping You Memorise N... **
When learning repertoire, once it's on your internal jukebox, you need to get the chords down. This is best done away from the piano to reduce conscious interference at the piano and confirm to yourself that you really know the progression.
---
The exercise herein encourages you to follow the steps below while away from the piano, before going to it and feeling the chords and playing them however your hands so desire. The benefits are significant in repertoire mastery, major scale mastery and internal piano mastery!
1. Choose how many chords your progression will include (e.g. 3);
2. Select, at random, numbers diatonic or non-diatonic to the major scale (no master key selected yet) and master the sequence (e.g. 4, 2, 7);
3. Choose a master key (e.g. F);
4. Apply the results to your internal piano (e.g. Bb, G, E) and master;
5. Choose chord types depending on your level or preference (e.g. only major triads) and master them on your internal piano;
6. Go to the piano and have fun with the results!

Thank you Dan for this video, very much needed for me: away from the piano and visualisation. I need to get to the point of feeling comfortable in a key without conscious interference and stumbling . Lots to practice.

Smashing exercise Dan! I really like the idea of separating chord types and master keys ie play major triads with roots in the master key of Bb. I have a tendency to get stuck in a mode (same 7 notes). Imma really lean into this one. I can see it gettin really funky mixing in different rhythms on each number! Thanks for leading the water pianists!

That's a great idea indeed, you are breaking those barrier which traditional methods force us to do continuously, What I've got from this video is the freedom to bring your idea to life without even thinking diatonic restrictions and tongue twisting modes, Spontaneity is the root to improvise and there's no undo button while improvising, so it's a great thing to challenge ourselves to perform on the spot without even thinking and it sounds awesome and surprising, not only to the audience but to ourselves as well, Like water flows without even thinking about the destination which is a beautiful theory and fundamentals of Water Pianism, Thank you so much

Thanks Dan for an intriguing and inspiring video lesson. What I need to do now is to think a bit faster by doing more “away” from piano. When you mention in key of A major and a random chord progression will be 5-2-6-4 then you change to 5-2-b6-4. I wonder why first then I realize you try to avoid F# on your keyboard , “b6" gives F instead, quick thinking, Dan. Enjoy and much appreciated

Hi Dan! What a nice exercise😌 Definitely something I can think about on the way to work However I'm a bit confused as to how it removes conscious interference...🤔

Thanks... but I think it's Clocks by Coldplay which activated my brain! But such chord progressions are everywhere in pop so it could be many songs!! Best, Dan

I don’t want to complain on your nice demonstration but for me as a 6 month beginner you are going way too fast when talking about numbers and showing on the piano.

I am sure you understand that I can’t make every video for beginners? If you see my playlist page, and I even mentioned that at the beginning, that all my videos are now in special playlists (250 videos, most for beginners). If this video is a little above you, you would do well to see the Best Beginners Playlist (linked in every description box) or see some of the new playlists, one of which being chords and progressions, others being major scale content. So once you’ve got those videos down, come back to this and it will make a lot more sense. Your comment is exactly the reason I say in every video that major scale mastery is paramount! So I trust you’ll make the most of my playlists and seemingly endless content to help you get to the level of this video and beyond 🙏 Best, Dan
