Wonderful to see this series return! I really enjoyed the first four installments, and am glad to see this really clever, original, series is still going strong. Like a lot of people have said, your typical tone is very upbeat and seems to remind people of Bob Ross, so it’s a bit of a change seeing you tackle the subject of misery. Still, you did a great job handling that challenge, in spite of the fact that you had a model whose face was covered by a mask. Great work as always - already looking forward to part six!

Use something clear to paint tears coming from the eye holes in his mask. If there was a way to reposition the head, so that the head appears to drooped down in sadness. Like he's hanging his head. Those two things alone could project a lot of sadness and misery. Alternatively, you could have made a bigger base. Put a broken tree in front of him, and had both the rats and a lesser Skaven all nailed to the tree. Tilt his head up to look at them. Open his mouth to give the appearance of shock and add the tears again.
@GoobertownHobbies5 жыл бұрын
That's a cool idea! I'm definitely interested in doing big elaborate bases and making the figure more like a diorama. I like that. As for positioning the head, it's a pewter model which makes that pretty tricky unfortunately... Good ideas though! :-)
@looselycollected75055 жыл бұрын
A jeweler's saw, some green stuff, and a bit of patience. It can be done. If I could send pics here I would show you a Dark Legion monster I painted long ago. I used a metal Capital soldier to make a dead trophy stabbed onto one of the monster's spikes. He went from an upright standing read to fight pose to a droopy raggedy doll hanging on a spike dead pose.

Yay! I must be one of the 50. :) As usual, the roulette is inspiring and still proves to be quite the challenge. The benefit of hindsight always provides an unfair advantage but I did get an idea to offset the colors and draw attention to his face. Instead of using the purples as a main color on the cloth, painting him in drab browns/oranges over muted metal (rust) and keeping his robe in muted tones as well, you could use an almost sickly pale skin tone with purple shading to invoke illness or fatigue. The red comes into play as a spot color for blood. He might even had to put the rats out of their misery himself because they were ill, caught in a trap or rabid. Ok. I must have an old Skaven in my boxes somewhere. :D
@GoobertownHobbies5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I really like that idea! Like you said, hindsight is 20/20, I didn't notice how troublesome the helmet was until I had most of the base colors on- something to think about earlier next time. Thanks for being a longtime viewer Eddy! Go paint some skaven :-)

Don't be so down on yourself with the project. What probably got in your way was that you had a vision of how it would play out, and what ended up happening was that it wasn't looking how you saw it in your head. With the Mini painting challenge, the point you made for this was to push your boundaries. And if you go in to a project instantly thinking of how it might work out, try not doing that before you roll the dice, or even start painting, just paint what colors need to fit the challenge while keeping that theme in mind, you are very creative and the easiest way to constipate creativity is to over think a project, rather than expand on it. I personally would of green stuffed him a pouty lower lip, maybe some cartoony tears since he naturally looks less realistic being an older model. Also the arrow shafts would do well with some fletching, and the colors on the fletching could tell more of a story as to who shot the pet (what faction of the Empire, goblins,etc). The small rat could of also been made to be a baby rat, coming up to the dead momma rat, trying to wake it up by nuzzling, hows that for taking it to the misery place? I genuinely like that you have a code of standard with your channel. Love the vids, keep it up.
@GoobertownHobbies5 жыл бұрын
Whoa! Those are some truly excellent ideas! You're right, the arrow shafts could have told a whole new part of the story... and the rat bambi... oh wow, that's such a gut-punch. Thanks so much for the advice and the ideas, you're right, overthinking things can constipate creativity. On the next roulette challenge I'll make it a goal to keep pushing through to the end and see where that takes us! :-)

Dude I really like your videos. I made some "contrast paint" following your guide and it turned out AWESOME! My friend painted some Infinity models (super cool sci fi game) with his GW paints, and I painted those same models w/ my home made paint and they looked identical! I'm honestly not a huge fan of that paint style so I don't think I'll use it that often, but it's fun to know I can mix some up whenever I want. I hear you talking about putting inks through your airbrush. I would LOVE a video on how you do that. I'm an airbrush noob looking to improve my skills. It always tough picking up a half finished project, let alone having it stare at you from a shelf or something. At the same time, sometimes you do need a break to examine your previous approach and learn how to refine that or even go in a different direction. Nothing wrong with that. I think everyone has their own hill to climb in that regard. I think Ikit turned out pretty well and the part replacement doesn’t look out of place for his model. I can see this being the impetus that turns him into the sort of mad scientist that he’s sometimes depicted as. “Tickles and Scratchers would want me to live my life to the fullest. Commence warpstone experiment number 83091!” As an edit, I’m not sure how I would’ve approached the helmeted face. It seemed like the only real exposed areas were around the mouth. He looks like he has a sneer or something, although in this case it’s more of a grimace. That’s a very small area of the face to work with. Everything else is pretty much covered so without going whole hog and sculpting/scratch building a new head, it would be rough trying to change that. I think you tried to convey the emotion the best you could given that we can’t really see Ikit’s face. I think the base, his posture and what he’s physically carrying inform the viewer what he’s emotionally carrying. A tough challenge for sure, but hey you saw it through.
@GoobertownHobbies5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, taking a break is definitely a doubled edged sword. If you can actually get yourself to return to the project you often have some fresh ideas for it. Hehehe, I like the idea that this is Ikit's origins story. He doesn't have the crazy backpack yet because he hasn't built it yet. This is the traumatic event that puts him over the edge into full-blown mad scientist!!! :-)
@uhgtheuhg5 жыл бұрын
Have you thought about doing a community painting challenge? You pick random commenters/subscribers and you send them a mini (have them pay for shipping so there is no loss to you and it's fair), and you have us (or even you) roll for the same randomness. For people like me where I don't have enough disposable figures to play along, it would be fun and it you could vote on the best painted figure. Anyways keep up the good work! Been following you on YT and on Reddit for awhile, and I always look forward to your videos.
@GoobertownHobbies5 жыл бұрын
This is a very interesting idea! It has crossed my mind a few times. The goal is for each person to end up with a surprise mini, and then paint according to rules that I post on the channel. As a general rule, I'm going to avoid any plans that involve me personally spending a lot of time packing boxes and printing shipping labels, but there are definitely ways to make this work. One thought is to work with a company like warp crate. Everybody either picks a random mini from their own collection if their collection is big enough, or buys a warp crate with random minis. Alternatively, it might be possible to try to run it as a secret santa type swap, but that also requires a lot of organization...
@uhgtheuhg5 жыл бұрын
@@GoobertownHobbies Yeah I can see how this would blow up and get messy fast. I've never heard of Warp Crate so I'll look into it. Maybe we can organize something on the 40k or Miniatures Sub-Reddits. I know that Reddit has a great Secret Santa program through out the year. Anyways thanks for the reply!

Awesome, gratz on finishing it man! Tough to finish something that is miserable. Looking forward to some more of these, love this series glad it's back on! As for ideas how about a single tear dripping down his face?
@GoobertownHobbies5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That's a good idea. One eye is covered in a lens, and the other is recessed pretty far from the helmet, so it might be a bit tricky to find a good place to put that tear. The head on this model just isn't great for conveying emotions... Oh well, he's finished and we'll get a different model next time! :-)

Well done picking up the model again! It’s definitely rewarding and I think you nailed the theme even with some the handicap of the hood and the colour scheme. The face is definitely important when it comes to conveying emotion, that’s why Toby Maguire’s mask keeps ripping on Spider-Man lol.
@GoobertownHobbies5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nick! Yeah, protagonists really gotta show their face. I guess his lower jaw was showing... I could have gotten Judge Dredd levels of emotion from that ... :-)

For the helmet quandry; get some green stuff and give him a rad post apocalyptic mohawk.

Ahh, the mowhawk, the saddest of hair. It would definitely draw attention though!!! :-)

HAha, I love these vids man! Such a Bob Ross feel to them! Great stuff mate and I would agree with you that it can be really hard to get back to a project once you put it down. Can be hard to get the motivation back, or as usual, there's always something new and shiny around the corner. :)

Maybe some snow on Scratcher would sell the idea that he has been dead for a while, rather than seconds before the scene we see. The Roulette is a great idea, and the result is cool.
@GoobertownHobbies5 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea! I thought about that, but I was messing up my snow mixtures that day, so I nixed the idea for this model. Glad you like the roulette, I like it too! :-)

Model came out great. I might have made the armor more metallic and added some rust perhaps that would have made the head pop a bit more. Also you need an official Goobertoown shirt that says "The dice made me do it!"

I probably would have gone with a darker purple for the robes, then used orange and red as spot colors on the model. The orange red would have really come in on the base. I would use cork or maybe an actual rock to stand the Skaven on, around it would be lava with a few pieces of armor still floating waiting to melt away like the rest of his unit. He knows it’s only a matter of time until the rock he is on erodes away with the lava, miserably he waits for his fiery end. Well that’s my take, but I really liked yours as snow is one of my favorite things, but I unfortunately live in Florida. lol

That's an awesome idea Ryan! I'm gonna file that one away in my head for later :-)
