Random Retro Review #59

No matter how many times I tweaked noise removal settings: Every time I removed the droning AC unit it would create a bunch of terrible audio artifacts. I spent hours changing settings, re-exporting it, and re-checking it.
Finally I decided that the AC unit isn't that bad compared to the horrible clipping sounds that happened for nearly 3 minutes straight. I tried. Sorry

by the way, the grappling hook acts as a grabber for the bullets people leave after shooting them that are "out of reach", and the best place to level up your hp's is the second part of the board at the elevators, paratroopers constantly fall, so it's easy to level up. (takes a long time, but it's worth it) Also, if you collide with a truck on the map, there's a mini OVERHEAD game that looks exactly like Commando (homage to the o.g. i'm sure) when you shoot and blow up certain cars, men etc. they give you a wing medallion, everyone you pick up is a continue.

When I revisit this classic, I'll heed your advice. On the first like 10 minute attempt, it didn't seem like there was any more depth than hook and shoot. I appreciate the tips, and I'll get my practice in on weekends and hopefully do an episode of getting shit done with Bionic Commando. I've played Dracula's curse so many 100 times in my life, and my bro and I have been talking about it to such an extent, that it'll probably be first though...

Bionic Commando is def worth a revisit. Also, you level up in the game, and get more HP. So you're only a 1-hit guy for the first few minutes. Eventually you get up to something like 12HP, plus healing medicine, etc... it's a very involved game.

Awesome to know. I definitely will revisit it in the near future. The 1 hp situation seemed like contra without solid understandable controls...

@@spinninginfinite Yeah, thankfully you build up HP, get some good items, like a vest that deflects enemy fire, and the controls start to kick in. The difficulty is REALLY front-loaded. I think the first level is, by a good amount, the hardest level. The only levels that even come close are the last couple. I also grind on the first level to get my HP up to around 5 or 6, just to get me going for the rest of the game. Hope you enjoy it!

Bionic Commando was the best action/adventure platformer on the NES. (I played nearly all of them back in the day, most to the end.) It was loosely based on an arcade game (same name), but added tons of depth. The final levels and ending sequence are incredible. A very difficult game with a slower pace than most -- all about timing and precision. Definitely one of my top 5 of all time.

I believe you. Most games on NES lacked depth and it seemed like we were just getting started. I have two old buds that both swear Bionic Commando is the epitome of NES games (they were actual neighbors and shared the same NES but whatever). It's a true shame we passed it off like we did. I will get back to it someday. My notebook of "try again to beat" is only like 30 deep right now- including Bionic Commando for NES. (I heard later reboots weren't great...?)

@@spinninginfinite There was a 3D reboot on one of the PlayStations, it looked awful and I never played it.
