Hi! Thanks for taking care of that pigeon. For future reference, that is a juvenile feral (city) pigeon. In case you ever take another pigeon in, I recommend feeding them seeds such as wheat, peas, corn, sunflower seeds and others. It's healthier for pigeons than bread :) Good job though! Btw, it's highly unlikely to catch any diseases from city pigeons unless you inhale or eat large quantities of their poop. People are often misinformed on that issue.

Hi. But what was wrong with the pigeon? I don't understand. Was it something like a tummy bug? So if I see a pigeon that cannot fly, should I try and take her in and look after her until she is able to fly? Obviously if she had a broken wing that would be something else.

@@lauragrillo27 this little guy was a juvenile pigeon.... and from my experience, he looked a little sick, at this age they are vulnerable to diseases... But they are also very strong... My advice: if you find a bird....put it in a cartoon box and take it to the vet, you cannot afford any risk: the city pigeon is exposed to diseases that could be lethal for them...NOT FOR US, don't worry 😊😘

@@lauragrillo27 thats a baby pigeon maybe left out the best too early. i have seen baby pigeons who don't join a flock, starve for multiple days and get sick. once they get sick they don't eat well. they will sit on the corner. they are easily hunted by cats or a bird of prey. he should've saved that sick baby bird. i'm pretty sure that pigeon won't survive.

Thank you for posting this video. When you show this kind of compassion, you are sending into the universe the kind of opposing force that is badly needed in the madness we're all subjected to daily. I've begun to make a difference in my own neighborhood, changing people's negative attitudes about our little buddies. Water seems to be the game-changer. These guys will wash them selves until they're so clean they squeak. Once they don't look funky any more, people are willing to see them in a different light. Lots of people are now commenting on how pretty and friendly they are. One lady said "I think maybe I was wrong about these little guys. They're actually very cute and kinda fun once they get cleaned up" it's a kind of ripple effect that spreads the more you do it. Please keep up the good work. God bless.

More important, pigeons have nothing to eat and 90% of them die in their first year of their lives, get sick and die etc. They don't naturally live in cities.

You can tell that he is very young, because of the pigeon feathers and his beak and eyes even without coloring well, he must not have left the nest more than 1 or 2 days before, the youngest when they leave the nest are more likely to get sick because your immune system is very low, I rescue several with all kinds of problems

They can really get right inside your soul, can't they? I've been looking after them for almost 8 years now, and when I lose one it still gets to me just as much as it ever did. After a while, they sort of become little people because they all have different personalities. You get to know them as individual living beings, and not just an anonymous mass of genetic birds. This brings joy and friendship, but it can also be heartbreaking when you lose one that you really care about. Emotional investments are the same as any other. You get returns, but there are also risks.

If you find another pigeon in need of help, you can tell if he or she is young by the beak. If the beak seems too big for the head, s/he is very young, 3-5 weeks approximately, and will still be learning to fly. S/he will probably still have some fluffy yellow feathers and a very short tail. There will be no white coating to the top of the beak. Even up to 8 or 9 weeks old, there will usually be some white "speckles" over the head feathers, which are remains of the baby fluff. Around 6-10 weeks, they will still not be as big as an adult and towards the end of this period will probably have no sign of the baby feathers, but still no white bit on the beak, (the cere) although this protective white waxy coating will be starting to slowly form. Sunflower seeds are an all time favourite food, so if you have any next time a pigeon drops by, they will love you forever! Did you know pigeons can recognise themselves in the mirror? I love watching pigeons have fun playing with their reflections as your pigeon friend did. Has she come back to say hello or brought any friends back to you? That's not unusual after you help a pigeon out. Thank you for looking after her!

Neither old nor very sick. Testing for flight in a small bathroom doesn't show anything more than that the pigeon is smart enough to not waste energy in a space where it can never properly fly, aka. a positive test for the pigeon. It's harder to fly inside an apartment by several magnitudes and any pigeon that can take off 90 degrees can soar several hundred meters up in the air, a lot easier. It's like tossing a fish in a puddle of mud and testing for swimming. Popcorn is too salty for the bird to process if it was really sick. It needs salt but salt can be added in water just below the threshold where humans can taste it, under 1 part per thousand. For example 0.35 grams per liter and a pinch of baking soda + 3 grams of vinegar. The solution should be given before food and after some rest. Lot of people add sugar but don't because whatever energy is in the sugar it will be more taxing on the organs and blood to handle it, especially if sick. Do a watery porridge from oats with zero sugar, for a boost of energy. Also. Do not give chocolate, exotic fruits or large seeds that are for non human consumption, i.e. if the seeds are ok for humans and not salted its fine, but most raw seeds are toxic and the bird won't know better if very hungry and if it's foreign seeds that it has never encountered. Despite being a poor choice bread is better to give than most other stuff like salted peanuts and other junk food that will kill a healthy bird if force fed. Anyway, nice to see the good intention. If you want to pet a sick bird ? then play with its legs rather than body/wings, after checking that the legs are not hurt. Hold it upside down and do pull ups etc. which is an appreciated exercise for birds that can't walk or fly. For flight training hold the body with thumbs across the lower back and do not hold onto the legs. Good luck in the future.

We gave it food and water and HOPED it would be better... With all due respect, vet is the way to go. PS because I know that I will be lynched now by the crowd, have been working in bird rescue for over 15 years, and young pigeons (35-40 days of age of that bird) are still partially fed by a male and usually when they go down is bacterial infection or cocci, so medication is needed in order to make sure they make a full recovery and not end up with some organ damage (usually recovery with no treatment leads to poor liver function, sensitive gut with weak gut flora that can not be stabilized with probiotics). The rule I use it, if you find a sick bird, do everything you would if you found an abandoned child - inform the authorities who are responsible for such cases and go to the doctor ASAP.

What, are you joking? That bread isn't food - _for people or pigeons_ ! You're starving him (obviously). The pigeon is young: he hasn't developed feathers around the base of his break yet, and he hasn't developed full iridescent coloring (that comes when he starts to produce more hormones). Regarding transmissible disease risk: "The New York City Department of Health has no documented cases of communicable disease transmitted from pigeons to humans." - Dr. Manuel Vargas, New York CityDepartment of Health. "Pigeons are not a public health hazard. Nobody in public health is losing any sleep over pigeons." - Dr. Joel McCullough, Medical Director, Environmental Health, Chicago Department of Public Health. "[...the Arizona Department of Health Services does] not have any documented human cases of disease which have been definitively linked to outdoor pigeons or pigeon droppings. When cases of diseases are reported (and by law [certain bird related zoonoses are] reportable diseases), VBZD staff conduct complete investigations to confirm the diagnosis and identify the source of infection. …Our case investigation data gathered so far, would suggest that pigeons are not significant as a cause of human disease in Arizona." “We don’t see pigeon-related-disease problems...” “I don’t think they’re seeing them anywhere..." - Bill Kottkamp, Supervisor, Vector Control, St. Louis County Health Department "Pigeons do not get avian influenza and don't carry the virus," Dr. Cornelius Kiley, DVM, Canadian Food Inspection Agency Although pigeons have been shown to become infected with West Nile Virus, they do not act as reservoirs and thereforedon't transmit the virus..." -Pennsylvania West Nile Virus Surveillance Program. As a result, pigeons are generally no longer accepted for West Nile Virus testing by other government disease-surveillance agencies in the U.S and elsewhere. “We do have some concern about the indiscriminatekilling of pigeons.” “[For example, histoplasmosis disease rates are] misleading and irrelevant, because histo’s so ubiquitous. It’s in the soil, regardless of whether pigeons are around or not...”- Dr. Marshall Lyon, National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta “Problematic density [affecting human safety] is probably more determined by people getting their possessions defaced.” “I’m not terribly worried about pigeons.” - Dr. Alex Bermudez, University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine

1st of all. don't believe any news came from America. you have no idea what Americans can do. they spread all the rumours that will lead to kill pigeons. once they hate something then they try to influence this to whole world. and they are so clever that they easily find financial profit in these rumours. as much i have understood American spreaded rumour about pigeon that they carries disease because once people believe pigeon carries disease then they will try to kill pigeon do they will buy gun or some kinda hunting weapons. and definitely if anyone buy some weapon it will benefit to America directly or indirectly. human carries most of the diseases among all creature on this planet. specially Americans carry disease
