Fantastic review. I usually don't see people talk about the warranties, but I'm glad you did. Manufacturer's design their warranties to lose as little money as possible while also increasing confidence in the product. So a designed 6 month warranty is very worrying and makes me wonder about the reliability of the product.

One thing I can say just by looking at this thing out of the box, it will definitely outlast the SCUF. I've bought probably $200 worth of replacement paddles for all of my SCUF controllers, not to mention all of the other crap that keeps going wrong with them. The design of the Astro paddles and buttons just seems much more well thought out. Even the plug in seems superior. I nearly stripped out the plug on the vantage trying to wiggle it in the first week I had it. Then I just decided to leave the plug in to avoid wear and tear of trying to wiggle that plug into the hole it didn't seem to want to go in.

If your interested in getting this controller vs any other custom one (AIM, battle beaver, or scuf) here's some comparisons. Wall of text incoming.... CUSTOMIZATIONS BB, scuf and AIM have amazing customizations. They win hands down in aesthetics. However, all that extra stuff costs lots of money. Performance wise, you can do many things with them when you make it online before ordering. You can create a controller that is tailored made for YOU. However once you do, you are locked into that controller format. And can never change your customizations outside of your paddle mapping. Smart triggers, thumbstick tension and all other things can vary based on which game your currently playing. smart triggers are still the most crisp I've used by far, but mostly for feels as it doesn't affect your gameplay too much when compared to the c40 and a hair trigger set up. With the c40, everything is customizable throughout your use of it via the software which is extremely easy to use. Remapping, hair triggers, stick sense and all that good stuff. Offset or parallel layouts are interchangeable. Yes there are some things you cannot change like thumbstick tension. To those wondering, it's slightly less tension than a standard Dualshock controller. The 2 profiles make it seamless to switch between different genre games. Also the ability to change stick sense and trigger sense is like none other Ive seen on the market. This is a tough category to judge but I'll call it a tie because it depends on the gamer. LONGETIVITY Hands down goes to the c40. Here's why. Build quality is top tier, modules such as sticks most importantly can be easily replaced for a reasonable price (around $15-20), and triggers will hold up better over time. The triggers are essentially normal PS triggers with a variable stop you can set physically. However it only stops them about half way. You get your hair trigger setup through the software, which relieves any worries about triggers going bad like on smart triggers. However smart triggers are a tad better IMO. 180 day warranty on the c40 and replaceable modules is a huge win. Not to mention the ability to put out software and firmware updates that work flawlessly and are very easy to do in 2 minutes. With other controllers, customizations are harder to fix because they have to be sent out to be repaired if in warranty. It's just a hassle to deal with. PRICING Ah the controversial category. C40: $200 with pretty much everything you can ask for on a controller, looks aside. It also has better longetivity. Other controllers: strictly necessary customizations for performance and your looking at $155-190 forgoing all aesthetic options. The winner of this category is subjective I suppose. Think about what you are willing to pay for, how long it will last and your maximum budget. ERGONOMICS Mostly subjective as well. But I'll give this to other custom controllers because for the majority of people, holding a controller closest in size and feel to their Xbox or PS4 will be more natural. Also there are usually grips you can choose to add on for additional $. The c40 is the biggest controller by far and it can take some time getting used to. But I also think no grips are needed because the material is fantastic and it has enough grooves to hold a firm grip. This is coming from a person who has hyperhidrosis on my hands and they sweat a lot, especially when gaming. Oh and about the number of paddles, obviously 4 is better than 2 but let's be real here, for fps games at least: it doesn't matter unless youre playing a tournament at the professional level. 2 extra paddles for what face buttons do in fps games aren't that much more useful. My two paddles for apex legends for example are my jumping and swapping weapons cause you do that a lot in the heat of battle. Reloading and melee is whatever. But hey no argue that if you have four and can comfortably use all four, it's definitely better. FINAL THOUGHTS Know yourself as a gamer, which games you like to play and what type of player are you within the games. Choose the controller that will best suit you overall considering those categories. My personal opinion after having battle beavers and scufs and now this astro, the astro wins in my book. I've only had the c40 for a couple weeks and the reason I can confidently speak about it's durability is cause I have experience on what breaks and doesn't break on other controllers. I just cant see the astro failing on me with these replaceable modules and software integrated triggers. Time will tell I guess. The most reasonable reason why I just can't see people choosing the astro is for it's size. Tbh, if it just ain't comfortable to hold then it's just not for you. Btw, battle beaver is the second best if your interested. If you got this far, I hope this helps some of you decide because I know it's a sizable investment spending over $150 for some of these damn controllers. Peace

It needs a dongle to be used. That alone makes it dumb. Why not make it like any ps4 controller where it connects without anything.
@beyoncehadoneofthebest5 жыл бұрын
Felix Cortes it connects using 2.4ghz versus scuff and PS4 which use Bluetooth. 2.4 is always faster and more reliable than the ps4 Bluetooth - and for serious gaming this is important. So while it might not matter to you- this is a “pro” controller.

I've watched this and many other likewise reviews of this controller and I've heard more petty gripes than really any game breaking complaints, so I was pretty stoked to get it. I do agree that I balked at the price, but my girlfriend was seeing me always eyeballing them and playing around with open box displays, she took the initiative and bought me one as a gift (totally surprised me) and I've gotta say, I love this controller. Mind you, I've never owned a pro or modded controller before (though I did put Xbox One analogs in my stock Dualshock 4 because those are superior to the original ones and luckily compatible), it was odd at first and took a little bit of time to get used to. But after I got used to it, it was as natural to me as a Dualshock 4, but 10x better. It's very ergonomic and everything is just where it needs to be. Now, to address a couple of complaints/gripes I've heard: 1.) I personally never had that loud beep in my headphones from plugging them in, as referenced in this video (though I am using an A10 ASTRO headset, so I can't say if this is an issue with other headphones) and 2.) Another issue being stick drift from module swapping, I did this a couple of times to test to merely see for myself and I never encountered it. But in any case, it is easily fixable and you have manuals from ASTRO on how to adjust that on the fly and multiple KZbin reviews that cover how to as well, so you're solid. I'm not trying to bash the reviewers of this controller, they've mostly done their homework and put time into fully testing as much as possible, but this is most likely one out of a couple of dozen pro controllers they've had, so they end up seeming pretty biased against it at the end. Being my first, I might seem biased, but it's a solid and amazing controller and you definitely get what you pay for. While I do disagree with the price(it should be more $150 tops) it definitely lives up to it's price tag and it's a quality product in comparison to a larger majority of pro/modded controller options out there and there's plenty of evidence out there by this point to prove that fact. I'm glad to have mine and I'll gladly stand by it.

First two (4ps pro controllers) broke from the paddles in the back which just stopped responding and so I proceeded to ship them to scuf to get them fixed, waited a month, and when I got them back they worked for two weeks then broke the exact same way. This was all in a matter of 5 months. After this I just put up with broken paddles until the scuf impact came out which I ended up getting and all was looking well, paddles stayed responsive and everything was nice and clicky until both my thumb sticks went to crap, they would rotate me in game on their own and straight up not respond other times, this was also within 5 moths. 2 important things missed on the review. 1. If you buy the controller from Best Buy you can take advantage of their warranty program which is only around $40 for 2 or 3 years. It might only be 2 but still def worth it. And they will swap it out no questions asked. 2. Idk if you played with the controller enough, or the type of games you played. In first person shooters, where you have to use the L3 to run often, like battle royale modes. You will only get around a month use out of both. Thats with you switching the R3 one over and then using that one as well. Something inside the module wears out extremely quick. So it will stop you from running over and over. However that is the only issue with them, they still will work fine for anything not needing the actual action of pressing them down. Astro will however send you brand new ones, as this is an issue for many ppl. They are working on a fix they say.

There are plenty. Like there are controllers for construction machines or industrial machines like cnc and such. The list is pretty big. And if you watch MKBHD's videos he have a camera operator arm robot thingie which can be operated by an xbox 360 controller so it's not a gaming controller in that situation.

thanks for the review. I'm considering buying it, as the 6 month warranty isn't an issue in switzerland - we have 2 years by law. I'd like to think that since the ps5 will be backwards compatible with ps4, the DS4 should work with ps5, but that's hard to tell. I guess I'll buy it eventually and just use it for my pc if it isn't supported by ps5

Another thing I saw a youtuber do. Apparently if the analog sticks get worn and have a drift, you can fix it using the software. For example, ever play call of duty and your camera keeps moving left or your soldier keeps moving right? Yea you can fix that with this controller. I plan on mapping L3 and R3 to the back so I'll never break the sticks. Good video here tho

Swapping the sticks and d-pad is something most people will only do once, but the option to replace a loose analog stick easily is nice. And do yourselves a favor on this or the PS4 controller, turn the light on the controller down all the way to save on battery life. Nobody looks down at their controller to see their health. That light is the dumber than having three prongs on an N64 controller.

@even13135 жыл бұрын
@@qasually For the kind of money they want for these they *should* last at least 6 months, yeah? But that's kind of the problem. Isn't it? When something you'd expect to use for years is only covered by a 6 month warranty?
@even13135 жыл бұрын
@v KEITH v That's great. But also not the point. If you pay $200 for something that is supposed to be premium you would normally expect it to come with an equally premium warranty. 6 months is not a warranty I would expect on a premium product. What's more it doesn't instill any confidence that their product will actually last. Due to all the moving parts I can see a lot of potential issues in the short and long term with this. Like, it doesn't matter if you can replace the sticks if the contact sensors themselves fail.
@NyCall4PRiNCE5 жыл бұрын
People complaining about the price being $200 but forget to realize the cheapest scuf with paddles and triggers is gonna be at minimum around $170 with no or little cosmetic customizations. And scufs last at most 6 months before something breaks. I’ve had 2 scufs break on me. $350 down the drain. I’ll gladly switch to this from garbage ass scuf.

@just a mad boi Actually, I have both controllers in my hand. Astro for review, so I don't need to watch the video... but I did anyway. And there's no situation in which you're going to need that extra customization. When will you EVER need the two sticks directly next to each other? Any other config that someone would actually use can be done with the Elite controller. Further, the interchangable paddles on the back is FAR superior on the Elite. In addition to the ability to change them to hair trigger which means faster actions in shooters and such. The elite also allows you to customize every single button, not just some. But hey, I watched the video..... did you? Or did you just spout off at the mouth?
