I managed to pick up a faulty MSI 7850 2GB for £10 last year, hoping it'd be untested, but I found it was completely dead. Flash forward to August, I bought a heat gun to do some work on a few YLOD PS3s that I had lying around, tried it on the card with some no-clean flux and it's been working fine ever since. Back in 2017 I sold off my old EVGA GTX 770 for £30 after it had "died" and now that I look back at it, it probably just needed a BIOS flash.
@justinbuckley5 жыл бұрын
ndreww I got an Rx 480 that was acting like this for free in July, but after not being able to get it to work I sold it for £60, wishing I thought about trying a bios flash back then as I only considered it useful for overclocking. Windows simply wouldn't detect the card, not sure if a driver installation would have done anything.

I'm well aware of whats actually happening when you perform such work on the card, but it cost £10, and it would've been sitting dead for the rest of it's existence otherwise. It's obvious that it'll drop down dead soon enough but considering that I don't even game on the computer it's in and I've got spare graphics cards elsewhere, it's a perfectly acceptable thing to do to the card. Same goes with the PS3s that I did work on.

I had the same card before I upgraded, well, the "Super" Jetstream 780, and it worked fine for 5 years, then one day it started going to black screen and fans to max rpm when certain games were running, and not even always with the same games. It felt like there was either some specific thing it tried to do and crashed, or when the load started getting somewhat high. I cleaned it and chnaged the paste, temps were fine but it still did that. I thought it might have been a new driver version causing problems so I reverted to an older version and blocked windows updates, it worked fine for a week and then it did it again.

Hey... I also discovered flashing GPUs from within windows, you can actually use team viewer from another pc, to connect to it as it uses its own display driver and not dependent on the graphics driver itself. Only downside using Team viewer is that the resolution is 1024x768 which makes viewing some content crap, but it is plenty enough for running console commands to flash GPUs. Also, I don't think you need to create a bootable to run NvFlash or AtiFlash. You can just run it from within windows using either your iGPU or Teamviewer.

That too turned out to be a vbios issue, solved with a simple reflash (didn't even need to leave Windows, let alone reboot!) When looking for 'faulty but maybe fixable' cards, I'd steer well clear of AMD's R9-generation cards. Many of those faults stem from overheating damage to the VRM, a problem easily encountered given how hot they ran.

I got 2 semi-broken cards flying around, a GTX 770 2GB (Gainward Phantom) which I got for 5€ (seems to work, but previous owner had Blackscreens) and a GTX 680 4GB EVGA Classified which I got for 15€ back then, it works flawlessly but some sensors seem to be gone, at least in GPU-Z it goes kinda crazy with temps and voltages.
@jakegarrett81095 жыл бұрын
GPUz is highly inaccurate, check out my world record 33 Ghz speed.... www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/details/fkg6k Perfectly working hardware often shows anomalies (like 1 million volts on the core), and software in general shouldn't be trusted with voltages (and temps are silly too, just look at any FX CPU, those show BELOW room temp when idle, which is physically impossible on air/water since it can only be hotter than the surrounding air... HWmonitor and CPU-z just never fixed the sensor calibration they pull the data from, and FX is ancient at this point, so it will never be corrected). Don't read too much into software... Even windows commonly bugs out (known as the Windows sleep bug) and will have the system timer slow down (so your CPU display and also score like it really is 6-7 Ghz since most benchmarks score of the system timer. It won't be any faster in real life, but your system is thinking it completes the task in less time, and used to be a common way of cheating, but no, that's not what I did for the above linked score...)

I got hosed by two sellers that claimed something around the lines of "I guess it's overheating" but in reality the GPUs gave out no video signal, which is pretty much the worst defect it can have. Do NOT buy GPUs that don't give out video signals! If it's something like one of the cooler fans spinning at 100% at all times go for it, Arctic aftermarket coolers are an easy fix for that.
