"Rusty Cage" was covered by Johnny Cash on the 1996 album, Unchained, which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album, and Cash's version earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. During at least three live performances by Soundgarden (July 21, 1996, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at Forks In The River, early November 1996 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois, and at Soundgarden's last pre-breakup show at the Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii, on February 9, 1997), Cornell introduced the song with a dedication to Cash. On Cornell's acoustic tour in late 2015, he started including "Rusty Cage" in the set-list, employing Cash's country-rock arrangement of the song.

I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by people with AMAZING musical taste...From many different genres and it help start to mold my passion for music of all shapes sounds and colors...And I was about 8 years old when this album came out and the first time I saw this video on MTV...I was FLOORED to say the least...This era in music was the era that grabbed my soul...So many amazing bands...Song writers, just so much great music...And I'm so thankful I was so impacted at such a young age by these bands which opened the door to learn about other bands that influenced the bands I liked and it just snowballed...With all the sadness and tragedy that followed alot of these artist from the 90's, there have been sooooo many influenciel bands,albums,artist,art,etc... That pay homage to the beautiful sounds of that time and beyond...I mean whatever...I LIKE IT!!! :)

This, along with JCP and Slaves & Bulldozers are probably the most genius Soundgarden songs. I believe Cornell's greatest lyric-writing period was during Badmotorfinger.

Matt Cameron doesn't get enough credit for his part in this amazing album. Power and precision with his own original style. Plays so tight, doesn't overplay and throws in some sweet technical chops here and there to let us all know he's a master and not some unskilled chump like Dave Grohl
@user-pl5ds8iz6q7 жыл бұрын
pop popper Dave's even admitted in interviews he doesn't consider himself as a great drummer. He's just a simple 4/4 beat keeper. Matt Cameron plays polyrythms, complex odd time signatures and his precision and creativity put him light years ahead of DG

I used to get mad when someone would comment that a more recent form of media led them to a classic song they never heard before. As if it's right to judge everyone by the same criteria despite how many factors such as age,culture and personal taste make that idea obsolete. Now I realize I was being a dick and anything that leads someone to a band like Soundgarden is a good one. It's not like I have any ownership over any of the things I'm discussing,people tend to think of they heard of something before you that they somehow own it

The riffs in this song are so convoluted at first but once you listen to the whole thing it manages to get simpler as it progresses. From the first riff to the last. It’s actually genius.
@jonathanmosher72 Жыл бұрын
Simpler? The first riff is simple. The slow section is complicated AF. It's literally the most complicated song in its genre because it's 3x3/4, 5/8, back to 3/4 and playing slower with no rhythm to guide you in the beginning? It's ridiculous.

Rusty Cage is one of my favorite SG songs, I just love the riffs in it, and Cornell's vocals are incredible as always. If you like SG check out Pregnant Whale Pain, they just released their self titled album, they have nice riffs too, they're a little weird, but in a good way like Soundgarden and the vocalist is just insanely good. My favorite song from them is "Paperplanes", but listen too the others too they're great. A band like this is a rare find.
