It’s crazy to hear how lovable and fun Randy Johnson is. I remember as a kid in the early-mid 90’s how scary and intimidating he was on the mound. What an unbelievable player he was, and I have such a greater appreciation for him now. The Big Unit. One of the best to ever do it.

Arguably the goat of left-handed starters with apologies to Steve Carlton and Lefty Grove.

My dad and I had run into him shopping in a grocery store one day when I was a little kid, and he had a conversation with my dad like he’d known him forever! It was cool!

I still remember the commentator calling that shot... "This one is belted... and I mean BELTED into the upper deck!! Oh my!!"

I grew up in Seattle and while I unfortunately wasn't at this game, I remember watching it on TV. Even the most die-hard Mariners fan REALLY wanted to see McGwire hit a home run off of Randy's fastball at some point (although not right then, since Johnson was in the middle of an absolutely monster strikeout spree), just to see what a nuke it would be, and holy shit did it ever live up to the expectations. And Niehaus' giddy, excited call was just one of his all-time greats.

In a vacuum with no wind, that ball hit the back wall of the Kingdome. Outdoors with some wind, because McGwire hits the ball so high, the ball might have landed in Canada. The one Andres Galarraga hit one that same year that was similar. Almost left Joe Robbie Stadium.

@@jonmolina948 Who was it that hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium? MCgwire hit the roof, but someone actually hit one out.

@@murfdog19 Mike Piazza, I think more than once. I think Stanton did too. Reggie Jackson I think might have hit one out to right field. McGwire hit his to center field, it might be the longest.

I will never forget this game, he struck out 19 that night but still gave away a Homer to McGuire, I was in Left field bleachers lower deck when it was hit, still remember looking up and seeing it go over my head into the upper deck, never forget it and to this day I still try to find myself in the crowd but I still have yet to find me.

He gave up only one HR to a pitcher, Yovanni Gallardo, and that makes a lot of sense.

Being a d-backs fan watching his career in Arizona he was just plain mean and nasty. After he retired he was just an awesome friendly guy you would never have thought he was the nasty SOB beast on the mound

Part of throwing so dang hard is sometimes a hitter will just run into a fastball and it’s going to fly

Career defensive replacement Jeff Reboulet, who had 20 homers in a 12-year MLB career, took Randy Johnson deep in Game 4 of the AL Division Series against the Orioles in 1997. Has to rank among the unlikeliest HR ever.
