I've heard it 1000 times but i bever realized that Jeff Lynne did the extra stuff. You can totally hear it in thr background vocals... I just didn't know and never evwn thought of it. Most people would have played this whole video entirely straight in 1988, and it would have aged terribly. Randy Newman, ahead of his time again, never forgets how much of this is pure nonsense; as a result, it ages with charm and humour. What a Selleck-tastic delight!

Well, what I find particularly sly about it is that, since it's supposed to be the theme for a romantic comedy about a man who suspects the woman he's in love with is trying to kill him, you can read a double meaning into the lyrics, heavy eyelids, walking in the Holy Land, 'What did I do to deserve this? Not a thing,' etc, that is, this guy is currently mistaking love for slipping into a near-death experience. Makes the video look a little different, doesn't it? XD

Newman was a favorite of intellectuals early on due to his sarcastic and satirical lyrics. However, it would be far too short-sighted to describe him as a satirist or comedian, as he also wrote very touching, serious texts. Musically, Newman is influenced by blues, rock and ragtime on the one hand, but on the other hand he often provides his songs with sophisticated classical orchestral arrangements. The pleasant and often catchy music often contrasts with the often biting or profound lyrics. His versatility as a songwriter and arranger is renowned.
