If you ever watched "Awakenings" (Robin Williams) there is a scene you might remember toward the end. De Niro's character, Leonard, is meeting a girl played by Penelope Ann Miller in the cafeteria of the hospital where he is staying. He has had a treatment to cure his catatonia that was initially successful but now is causing grotesque muscular tics. He's twitching uncontrollably. They finish their conversation, and he's getting up and leaving. She takes his hand and puts it around her. They slowly start to dance together; gradually the twitching stops. Randy Newman wrote (and plays) that simple, haunting melody "Dexter's Song". That scene can be found here at YT, just look for "awakening dance scene".

Loved this reaction video. Big Randy Newman fan and glad you have an opening to explore more. Try Good Ol Boys, Sail Away for some older classics. Like with John Prine, the words are evocative with wonderful turns of phrases. Great compositions and much more complex than they sound (or so I was informed by my piano playing son). Some people don’t like his voice (again, like Prine), but it grows on you.

Nick, you reacted to Randy Newman’s Baltimore in your Lost in America marathon with Springsteen and Warren Zevon. Aside from Randy’s many film scores he’s also one of my favorite singer/songwriters from the 60’s and onward. Probably most associated with Short People the closest thing to a hit on radio. Unfortunately most people misinterpreted the song by not listening to the chorus. He spent a lot of time with the Eagles, Jackson Browne, LInda Ronstadt. Bonnie Raitt covered Feels Like Home. Known for his sardonic humor and writing. Check out Political Sience, Burn On, Rednecks, and Jolly Coppers on Parade.

Randy Newman and Brian Wilson are the two songwriters who elicit the most emotion from me. I heartily recommend Randy's "Ghosts", "Every Time It Rains", "I Miss You" and "Dayton, Ohio -1903" but the catalog is vast.

I love Randy Newman. This song was originally from his 1995 album, "Faust", where Bonnie Raitt provides the lead vocals. Randy is a great songwriter. His song lyrics are intelligent and often hilariously funny. I would highly recommend, "Political Science", "The Great Nations Of Europe" and "The World Isn't Fair". Peter Gabriel is a long-time fan of Randy Newman and would provide the vocals for Randy's song, "That'll Do", for the film, "Babe".

He comes from a long line of Newmans who scored and wrote songs for films. His uncles Alfred Newman, Lionel Newman and Emil Newman were Hollywood film score composers and four cousins who were also film scores composers. Check them out and see their very long list of accomplishments.

The songs Newman was doing before he was writing soundtracks are more than noteworthy. No less than Paul Simon praised him as one of America's best songwriters. I am particularly fond of the soundtrack to 'Ragtime'.

Randy Newman is one of the greatest writers. One album “Sail Away” but there is 60 years of incredible writing. Try the Faust CD. This song is sung by Bonnie Raitt. Amazing.

For most Randy Newman non-movie tunes, he is the King of unreliable narrators and multiple kinds of irony. Much of his tunes on the surface seem sweet and jovial, but with a little digging the songs have a razor wit and often a twisted sensibility. Not many songwriters operate in this space. This is one of his most covered songs. I forget if this one has a twist. It was originally intended for his musical version of Faust. Perhaps, the twist are the characters to whom this is being sung. He also does film scores as he comes from one of the most famous families of film scorers in Hollywood history.
