I was driving back to the city about fifty years ago when I heard Birmingham on CBC radio. Changed my life. I don't give a shit what anybody thinks Randy Newman is a treasure and always will be.

Randy Newman was ahead of his time and way above most people’s heads. I’m glad the hall of fame finally saw fit to include him, but his body of work speaks for itself. He’s one of the greatest artists to ever write a song. (Try his most recent album, Dark Matter. One of his very best.)

I worked on this project with the Rand Corporation. At a small meeting once, the manager told me, “Larry, I’m tired of your sardonic wit”. I started laughing because I realized that is why I love Randy Newman.

I love Randy Newman, but I watch this and I just want to bring to everyone’s attention that warren zevon still isn’t in there, and that’s a tragedy.

I didn't realise that. You're absolutely right. Zevon should be in any rock and roll museum if it means anything. Next to Randy too.

I'm a passionate musicfan and I still have my collection of nearly 2000 CD 's left + all the playlists online and if someone asks me what my favorite album is, I still say Land of Dreams by Randy Newman. Dons own musical talent shines through in his speech here as he certainly exceeded all expectations of it.

Don Henley is witty and articulate -- no need for a speechwriter when he is speaking. I need to go listen to some Randy Newman.
@diananutt15175 ай бұрын
@maryclarke959 🌿☘️ I stumbled across this induction video when Randy's masterpiece "Louisiana 1927" called to me tonight. I listened to Aaron Neville's version (be still my heart ❤️) and then googled Randy's version. I love them both and really was glad that Randy included photos showing the devastation caused by the flooding of New Orleans. It's so important that we learn what people have had to overcome . History lessons in school either miss or don't fully convey what people have had to endure. I wasn't aware Randy had written so many songs, so like you, I listened to quite a few. I'm not surprised Don Henley and Randy are friends. They both care about important things that need our attention and use their talents to make a difference. Sorry this turned into a book, Mary! Take good care.

Henley delivered a gem with this induction speech. I'll take your word for it that DH is humorless, but I've also come to understand that leading a band while also achieving a degree of success requires this. Frank Zappa had a phrase "would you like a window seat or an aisle seat [back to LA]?" for band members reluctant to endure the pain of touring.

Great speech by Don Henley. No matter what may be said about him, the dryness of the wit mildy suggests a nifty stand-up. There is a job as a commentator on the weeks' world of absurdities to be created for him, IF the music career dries up!

...and a great admirer of Randy Newman's, Linda Ronstadt, did not get inducted until the following year. Truly "life is not fair!" Fortunately, this did not matter to Ms. Ronstadt who has stated her professional goal was simply to earn a living singing. Amazingly, six years after receiving this award, Randy Newman was nominated for an Oscar for scoring the film "Marriage Story."

You might wanna give a listen to the original version of "Last Night I Had a Dream" from 1968... one of the most aggressive garage rock pieces of the late 1960s. And if you don't consider "Mama Told Me Not To Come" a rock song, that's on you.
@PhilBaird12 жыл бұрын
What genre would you put him in ? Many of his songs tap into the same root that rock and roll did. He just did it his own way.

A lot of artists have their own unique brand of rock and roll. Randy Newman is no different.
@theelectricant989 ай бұрын
He fused tin pan alley stylings and brill building stuff with rock and soul. Look at his collaboration with Nilsson. Look at harpers bazaar and the everly brothers versions of his songs. Pop at the time was rock, and as a pop songwriter, rock is one of the ingredients he was working with
