I spent many Monday nights at the Mid-South Coliseum in the early to mid eighties. I might have been at THIS particular match, I don't recall. But one of the memories that sticks out was during an Austin Idol match, as he was introduced as "The American Dreamboat"! One intoxicated fan yells to the mat, "You're no dreamboat, You're a SHIPWRECK!" Good times.... 🤣

This was early Randy savage..he had just a handful of moves…the punch to the head, standing elbow to the top of the head, throws his opponent out of the ring, top rope jump with elbow or double fist to top of the head and of course his iconic flying elbow drop from the top rope.

For my money, at his peak, he had IT ALL... best ever along with HBK and Flair... and now Omega.....

I grew up in East Tennessee, so me and my friends always watched Memphis and Southeastern Championship Wrestling. And ICW out of Lexington Ky, Savage was ICW champ before the promotion folded and Savage went to Memphis. Schedule. Idol liked to take lots of time off which he wouldn't have gotten in NWA or WWF. I believe he had a pretty lucrative real estate business on the side so wrestling wasn't his only source of income.

In his documentary Savage said that he asked his mom what a "macho Man" was, when she told him what it was he said he'd found his name. That was at the beginning of his career long before wwf. I love how people make up facts about someone's career and then act like the foremost expert on that person. Watch a documentary and an interview or two and come back.

Savage, like Hogan, is one of the most over rated wrestlers to ever step into a ring. he was nothing more then a mid card performer at best. To say he sucked would be an injustice to people who worked each night who did suck. They haven't quite come up with a word yet for such a mediocre talent as Poffo. A man who wouldn'tknow an ankle lock from an anklebracelet. And had all the class of a back alley wino . . .

Wrestling isnt just about 'the moves'. It's about being able to get a reaction out of the crowd! Talking on a mic and being able to keep the crowd's attention...is a hella skill. Macho Man was a great actor in the ring. He could sell both being the maniac...as well as 'begging' for his life when the good guy started to get the upper hand on him (only to find a shady way to get the upper hand back).
