Man thanks, Randy! I've been looking for a video that addressed tear out after you remove the bridge. Great video!

Thanks Jerry! Yeah you'd never known the bridge was pulling off from it being so hard to remove, it does look like hyde glue was used but sure didn't react to heat the way hyde glue does.

I used a clothes iron for a long time then up graded to the heat blanket from LMI. A big improvement for sure. I use it for fretboard extensions as well. Always a good time taking guitars apart. Happy New Year Randy
@RandySchartiger7 жыл бұрын
I used to have a small blanket but when I started doing this work again in 2009 it stopped working, I really liked it and am going to get another one eventually, I like the fact you can lay them over the wings of the bridge and get heat there as hot as the rest of the bridge, hard to get the wings hot with this iron. Thanks for tuning in Dane and Happy New Year!

Could of used this vid a yr ago. I heated off a bridge on an old suzuki guitar that clouded the laminate top from the iron. The iron temp and cardboard cover in your vid would of saved the top finish. Oh well, live and learn. Great watch. thanks

Yep that much heat can make a lot of unwanted things happen if it goes in unwanted places. I try to use as little heat as I can get by with. Thanks for watching!

oh, the other thing. I was curious how you got the fibre piece off the underside of the saddle. bit of heat and a knife? Vid of that would of been good.

aukino tanga I just used a single edge razor blade and was able to cut it off without damaging it. Never used heat for that.

That glue may have been Titebond III. It is 100% waterproof (unlike the Titebond I and II formulations) and it stands up to heat much better than the I and II recipes. Happy new year, Randy!

I knew you had a plan...lol.. Sounds like a damn good one too. 2 hours on that bridge must have been a bit aggravating though. But you got it and that's all that matters. I totally understand the not thinking so clearly the closer it gets to the New Year. Things have been a bit fuzzy here for a few days...lol ..But it's all good. I might not think that way when Life starts to get a bit more in focus though...haha. CHEERS TO YA, BROTHER AND HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!!! Catch you on the next one.
@RandySchartiger7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was a real battle getting that bridge off! I forgot to turn the camera on a few times lol Because of the glue not reacting to heat well caused a few fibers to pull loose but it wasn't anything bad. I've removed a LOT of bridges that weren't pulling up that came off easier than this one did. Just WOW! It pays to use the right glue! Gonna reset the neck on this puppy and glue it back on and do away with all the nuts and bolts, it'll never come off again! Happy New Year brother! I hope it's a great one for you and your family!

hey randy thanks for a great video, I've got a taylor 814ce that has a top separation. I've already healed it some with humidification, and i'd like to try that glue trick you used to the top so what is the name of the glue you used for that repair?
@mikemagnum79877 жыл бұрын
Randy, a thought regarding bridge attachment is rattlin around in my head! Why not configure a port hole into the top of the guitar where just the saddle and string holes come up and protrude to the proper height while the rest of the bridge remain on the under side where it would ride flush against the wood? String tension alone would hold the bridge firmly in place against the wood providing good firm contact and that kind of bridge installation would eliminate relying on gluing the bridge to the surface where it obviously provides a weak joint subject to failure over time. I think that the configuration that I describe would be a much better solution and would be trouble free throughout the instruments life span. Of course, my bridge would depend on proper design qualities to make it viable, but I am thinking that it might be worth the trouble. Have I described this concept adequately to get the idea? If not, let me know and we can make arrangements for private correspondence if you are interested.
@RandySchartiger7 жыл бұрын
Your idea seems like it should work! But it's getting really close to new years eve and I'm not thinking too cleanly right now lol It does sound like it should work tho, basically mount the entire bridge inside the body and only have the saddle on the outside if I'm understanding you right, and the string tension holding the bridge in place. Hmmmm I'll have to think about this when I can think clearer =D Happy New Year Mike and thanks for watching!

Sorry to hear that you are not at the top of your game today Randy! Great video so far really enjoying it. Happy New Year to you as well my friend! As for the reverse bridge mounting, yeah, when you get to feeling better, let me know what you think about that. I would like to see about a proto-type.
@thomastommy11927 жыл бұрын
Great video. I have a question!. If the maker had used a glue that would not work loose with heat. How would you get the bridge off? Good video thanks for sharing. I hope you feel better soon. Have a happy new year. But most of all have a safe one. I have had a friend get killed last week end. Right in front of my house in a car accident. I been kinda shook up this week. For God's sake everyone be careful this week end.
@RandySchartiger7 жыл бұрын
Oh man sorry to hear about your friend! Hang in there! I believe the maker DID use a glue that didn't react to heat but I got it hot enough to get a knife under it, it took forever to get off tho, just have to keep the heat on it and keep trying, it pulled some fibers away because heat wasn't effecting the glue much at all but its all good now. Thanks for tuning in Thomas!

Hi Randy- thanks for your informative videos. I took the bridge off my 1978 Takamine EF360S because it needs a new one. The bridge came off rather clean but the knife did get underneath some fibers of the spruce top. They are still intact and laying flat like a thin rigid flap about 1"x 1" where the lower wing was. I plan to affix a new bridge with hide glue. Do you think i should first inject a few drops of Titebond underneath that flap of fibers, then after it's dry hide glue the new bridge? I know you shouldn't apply hide glue to Titebond residue, but I suspect the flap will keep them separated. Or maybe just get some hide glue under that flap first? I want to use hide glue for the bridge despite the heating and set time challenges in case it needs a repair or to be repositioned in the future. Thank you Randy or anyone else with suggestions
@RandySchartiger3 жыл бұрын
hello Nick! thanks for checking out my videos! I would glue the fibers back down with hide since that what you are going to use for the bridge. hide glue will bond to hide glue and this would only make the overall bond better. if you were going to glue the bridge with tightbond then I'd recommend tightbond for the loose fibers. thanks again, I hope this helps.

That suction cup, is that your idea or is it a known luthier method? Cheers. 🤠
@RandySchartiger7 жыл бұрын
I can't remember ever seeing anyone else do it, it could be a trick others use I really don't know. I was trying to think one day how I could force glue into places it wouldn't run and saw a suction cup near by and the idea (in my head) was born, it works ver nicely. Thanks Simon!

Hi Randy - you wanted input - I'd do exactly what you're doing save for one thing. You gotta fix the bridge. You gotta fix the top crack. IF the neck to bridge plane is OK at that point I'd stop right there. I've seen the gap between fingerboard and top a dozen.times - it's a build error. The builder probably forced the neck joint and closed the gap initially by clamping the crap out of it. Over time everything returns to its natural state and the gap shows up - or the stress makes something else crack - or both. If you can get decent action without pulling the neck - do that and stop. Save yourself frustration and your client a ton of money. If you CAN'T then reset the neck as you normally would - but plan on a shim under the extension - under no circumstance would I try to force the fingerboard and top to do something it doesn't want to do. Just my .02. Brudda. - Hsve a great new year and feel better !!
@RandySchartiger7 жыл бұрын
All good points! I'll know more once I get the bridge glued back on it but pretty sure I'll have to do a neck reset, plus the plane of the fretboard to plane of the bridge is way off so I will have to align all that once I get the bridge back on it. I went ahead and took the neck off last night and spoke to the owner about gluing it back on and losing the screws and nuts and bolts, he agreed on gluing the neck on. Fun fun! Thanks mate and Happy New Year!
